I totally agree: Rolan was being a, a, a politician (Have to clean up my language a bit, y'know)! So I theorized he was unable to mindspeak as well as 'Fandes, say (he did sound clumsy in AFall). However, last time this was discussed (was it November?) A very good point, and I think Misty goofed on that one, trying to create a connection between Velgarth and mundania. It might be said that the number of people ready for _long-term_ shaych relationships is only 1 in 10 (your examples referred mostly to casual affairs), but firstly, I don't think that's true either, and second, Firesong wasn't concerned with True Love (tm). She told us from the beginning that we couldn't read any sci-fi or fantasy for our book reports. She said that they brought down your thinking level, that you didn't have to think about them, just like watching T.V. I told her she was very wrong, told her about this list (minus all the silly stuff, of course :)) about how we ponder, muse, and think about just about every last little shred of anything, until it's all pondered, mused, and thinked out. How we constantly do have to think, to figure out how everyhting goes together. She just said, oh, well, just don't do a book report on sci-fi or fantasy. I gave up. Than when we were writing short stories, she tells our stories can't be fantasy stories. I asked her to define fantasy, and she tells me "I think of fantasy as stories where I can't pronounce the names, and nothing is at all possible in our world, you know, goblins, witches, elfs, and that sort of thing." I did get back at her though. I wrote my nice little reality story, and did everything she wanted, except when it came time to name the characters. I thought of the strangest, weirdest, names to give them. One of them was Jurianexl, that's the only one I can remember off the top of nny head. Don't know what the grade on it is yet. While "shieldmate" may have a sexual connotation in Misty's world, it does not have that connotation in the context of American English in general. The singer or producer may have felt that "shieldmate" was a better choice based on the context of a filk song about women warriors. It has all those connotations fo battle, fantasy, close ties, etc. Plus it is more "ballsy" than sisters. Admittedly, you might expect the production company to pay a bit more attention to the origins and fantasy context of the song, but--Hey!--why should they be the first. Making pointless, or even inaccurate changes to song lyrics is a longstanding tradition in music. That is why there are so many variants on a particular song. And some of them are equally "huh?". Furthermore, clinical studies have proved that men cannot multi- thread (and if you really do read Anne McCaffrey, I don't have to explain that to you) in the same degree or magnitude as women. So nyah. Tell me though, why would Anne McCaffrey do that?!? Has anyone thought of the idea that Kris (the younger) may not be named for Kris (the elder)? Does it ever state that he is? Maybe Misty is trying to break out of the common fantasy mold where all your characters have different names? Maybe Kris is just a popular name in Valdemar, as John was in England, of Jennifer is among college students (I have 5 friends named Jennifer, all part of the same student organization). When you think about it, how likely is it that we could read as intricate a history as the Velgarth books and not have dupie names, if it were set in the real world? There are probably a lot more people out there than you think that are strictly straight. I myself am one of them. I can name a lot of other people, but I don't know everything about them there ever was to know, so I won't. I seriously doubt they are anyhting but strictly straight, I would bet everyhting I owned. I agree, more people would be bisexual if they could without fear. But I still think that main population would still be straight.
