I think they might skip over the more shaych parts, but I don't think they'd react violently - it's cliched, but often true - most homophobes are often as afraid of being seen as homosexual as they are phobic. I don't think they'd react as violently to something that a) They're not encountering in a group with others; b) That isn't 'in-their-face' in the way it might be in a movie or in person and c) Something that is truely only a part of the whole story/book/whatever. This isn't entirely speculation on my part - my mother, who is what I call a 'polite homophobe' borrowed the first book from my book-shelves, came back and borrowed the rest of them. She returned them saying "Good books", which is quite an admission considering she doesn't normally like fantasy type books - she's the type to read them (because she reads -everything-) and do the "Telepathic white horses" line.. (Hmmm, think I need to curb the length of those sentences.) (Polite homophobe: (n) The type of person who is courteous enough never to say anything or act in any way offensive to someone they know is shaych, but one who does consider the shaych mindset a perversion. Typically recognizable by the use of the word 'queer' in private conversations and the argument that the decline and fall of all the great empires of history was accompanied by the breakdown of the family unit and the increase in homosexuality. Often religious, sometimes non-practicing.) Used bookstores are my friends. (The one closest to my house is a real gem -- when I left for school I didn't tell them I was going. When I came home for fall break, I made a stop by there, and two of the clerks started gushing -- "Where have you BEEN?! We were worried about you! You should have told us....." etc.) I can spend $10 there and walk out with a grocery bag full of books. Plus, I ask for gift certificates for all major gift-giving holidays. (more snipping) > > Cheers, > Kerry. (the unkindest cut of all -- sig snipping) Grrrr... stuff like that really bugs me. This really obnoxious group of religious-right people at my school has formed an organization called CPST, Concerned Princeton Students for Tolerance, whose major grievance is that they believe the University is advocating things they believe immoral, such as safe sex and homosexuality, based on (as far as I can tell) two incidents of sketchy evidence. The first is a series of entirely optional meetings for freshmen during orientation, the second the fact that the University provides funding for LGBA. When the homosexuals and the homophobes come into ideological conflict, they believe that it is improper behavior on the part of the University to take steps to make the school more comfortable for open homosexuals and those in the process of discovering their sexuality. Makes me mad enough to chew nails and spit tacks. ObMisty: Sorry, there really isn't one. Complain by private email if you want to. (to steal a phrase, grin, duck, and run like hell.) Sure isn't a lot of violence, and the language is extremely mild... For that matter, I can't remember any cursing short of 'Lendel calling Savil an "old bitch" in jest... Possibly a few "shits" thrown in... Mostly it's "OH GODS!" "PELIA'S TITS" "LORDS OF LIGHT" "LADY BRIGHT" "HEAVENS" "BRIGHT HEAVENS" or "LORD AND LADY"... Sometimes just "LORD"... (did I miss any?) >If so, why isnt there a warning about the newer books? Firesong and An'desha >are gay, aren't they? Yes they are... And I still say that Tarma and Kethry were lovers... (#1 "I think thou dost protest too much" applies well... #2 Notice how she always states "all my pleasure in my skill never more with any *MAN*... #3 You spend years with another woman without a man in site... Eventually *something* is going to happen) However... In both books, with the exception of the scene with Firesong and Silverfox the sex is very much in the background... It's left to the imagination, and it's not really clear if it is happening at all... (In some cases it's vehemently denied! ;) Due to this most booksellers would take the "explicit material" tag off the book... >Also, what would you think the reaction would be for a complete homophobe who >has started MPawn, gotten completely enthralled in it and then gotten to where >Tylendel is gay? Would he/she/it throw it out the window, put aside their >inhibitions because it's such a good book so far and read it, or what? That depends on the person... I'm a very open minded individual... I just happened to come across _Magic's_Pawn_ in a bookstore... I read the book and loved it instantly... I've given it to many of my friends, open and closed minded... EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE OPEN MINDED PPL READ THE REST OF THE SERIES!!!!!<--look 5... As for the closed minded ones... If I gave them a warning beforehand they didn't get past page 2... If I just let them read a good number finished the book and liked it... The rest got to the part with Lendel and (pardon) bitched at me for hours about reading that kind of trash... Was a very typical reaction... Only one of the closed-minded ppl went on to read more... He has since become a very close friend of mine... And he's still straight... I don't give any credence to this "garbage in garbage out" crap... Love is love, and seeing love in other forms can only make you stronger... BTW: good quote to memorize... Any time you are faced with a homophobe with an attitude try quoting the last paragraph of chapter 11 (Magic's Pawn)... It gets a really good discussion going... Note: To give you some numbers to work with... I've given away exactly 42 copies of _MP_... First of all the she is always careful to state that "all her pleasure in her skill, never more with any *MAN*" Second of all there is an old saying "I think thou dost protest too much" Third: You spend several years alone with another woman and no man in sight... I guaratee something will eventually happen if you've had enough wine! Fourth: V&H is the only series without a gay character... Check it out... ;) Fifth: *NO OFFENCE INTENDED BY THE STEROTYPE* they have a typical butch-femme thing that you often see lesbians being portrayed by women writers (and most male writers) who are not gay themselves... Sixth: Keth passed up those two cute freelance mercs on the jewel wagon... :) Seventh: She wasn't interested in a man until she needed to reproduce...
