Sappho, one of the greatest ancient greek poets was a Lesbian (of the island of Lesbos) and her poems were written to women. I think the problem you are all having with the 'Kinsey Curve' is that your sample only contains those individuals having sex. If you take the three areas of 'Those who don't have sex', 'Those who have reproductive sex' and 'Those who have no reproductive sex' your Bell curve should work out fine. It is 'reproductive' instead of heterosexual because in some species, there is only one sex. Aw, come on, that's so boring! That's like saying it's that way just because the author wanted it that way. Where's the fun in that? You haven't made your case to me. Tarma is sword-sworn, and the sword-sworn don't sleep with anybody. They have no sexuality at all, in order to avoid conflicting loyalties when acting on behalf of the Warrior amongst the Shin'a'in clans. Remember? It's in the book. And remember when Thalkharsh tried to seduce her? It said that his efforts were futile, because there simply was nothing sexual in her anymore for him to work with. Methinks they do protest too much is one thing, but generally speaking when an author tells us that the characters aren't lovers, we as readers have little choice but to believe that. It would be decidedly odd for Misty to lie deliberately about their relationship. And Jadrek was obviously not along just to procreate. If he had been, there were easier men to find -- and probably better genes. It was pretty clear that Kethry was in love with him. Kethry also did have sex with other men -- unless you think Misty was lying about that, too. They were not in the wilderness with no men within miles, for goodness sake. How would mercenaries make a living with no one to hire them? The "nevermore with any man" line was a poetic device, not a hint. And Misty has not in any of her other books stooped to such a hackneyed stereotype as making any of her gay couples overtly "butch" or "femme." Name me one. So there's no real reason to believe she had that concept in mind when it came to Tarma and Kethry. Most of all, Tarma and Kethry had no phobias about homosexuality. They even posed as lovers occasionally, so they were not terrified of public reaction. What reason would they have had to lie about it all their lives? What's the motivation for that? But the key detail, I think, is that Kal'enedral just don't have sex. They just don't. It's in the book. Read the book. Thank you for your inquiry. Our next book from Mercedes Lackey is a Russian folktale fantasy called _The Firebird_, which will come out in hardcover in December 1996. She should begin working on _Arcanum 101_ after that, but we don't know yet when she'll finish it or when it will published. --M. ___________________________ Micole Sudberg Assistant Editor, Tor Books ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 1996 10:07:45 -0800 (PST) From: Becky Anne Christensen To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: warnings Message-ID: On Thu, 4 Apr 1996, Pat Tamarin wrote: > Heather wrote: > >Also, what would you think the reaction would be for a complete homophobe who > >has started MPawn, gotten completely enthralled in it and then gotten to where > >Tylendel is gay? Even if I hate the book, I will read it through to the end. I'm not a picky person when it comes to books though, so there's very little that I reaally do not like (ORDINARY PEOPLE>>>ORDINARY PEOPLE) I suppose that it would depend on the person you were talking about. If the person has the frame of mind that they do not want to contaminate themselves with homosexuality, then they probably wouldn't read it. If they just didn't want to be around real homosexuals, they might read it all, since Vanyel isn't in the real world (sigh). Just a point, how would you know if the main chracter ceases to be homophobic, unless you read the whole book? It could be a little side plot that isn't mentioned in the back cover. Which is another reason I always read the whole book, I'm an optimistic person, and believe there will be a wonderful event, and the whole book will become wonderful. Most of the time this doesn't happen though (ORDINARY PEOPLE!) it usually stays crappy. (ORDINARY PEOPLE!) Lady Becky The more that you read, the more things you will know. That is the best channel out of all the silly cable channels (besides TLC, and Discovery) I love those movies, they're so much better than most of the movies we get today. What I was trying to say, well, I don't exactly know how to say this, I'll probably just confuse myself more, but oh well. If a group of people were raised apart from all society, not told anything, had to figure just about everything out for themselves, they would p[robably be heterosexual. Not because they had to continue living, because they would have no clue what would happen. But because it was an instinct. I mean, men and women are made for each other, anatomically speaking. They would figure it out. This probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but I tried. I just went out and got an asbestos suit for easter, to protect myself, so flame away! But not too much, it is new and all, don't want to muss it up too much. :) Lady Becky The more that you read, the more things you will know.
