I sort of assumed that Tarma and Kethry were both dead by the time of Winds of Fate. I mean, they were--what?--around their 70s or 80s at the beginning of BTS? I think there was a mention of specific numbers, but I don't have it with me. Anyway, I always assumed that Tarma and Kethry had both died before the end of BTS. The training of Kerowyn always struck me as a last appearance, sort of final bow, before leaving the narrative forever. She may recycle a lot of names, but what would be the chances of finding a civilization where no names were ever repeated? Especially if names have meanings, because people would want to name their kids with some popular meanings. Take Matthew, for instance, it means a gift from God. Now what is every child? A gift from God (if you are at all religious, no matter what, it's a gift from something) So that's why there are so many Matts running around. I know a youth group of about 8 people, and 3 of them are Matts. This also means that just because someone shares a name with a famous person from the past, doesn't necesarily mean that person s the reincarnation of above person. Most reincarnations wouldn't have the same name anyway. Lady Becky The more that you read, the more things you will know. I figured that they had probably died by the time Kero got trapped in Karse and met Eldan. Even though I could understand there not being any mention of her letting her brother know that she was still alive (since he probably had no idea of where she was in the first place, and didn't particularly care), I thought that Keth and Tarma probably would have been keeping an ear out for news of her, and that she might have sent the Velgarth equivalent of a postcard: "Hi! Having a wonderful time, nice near escape from death, met the great love of my life, wish you were here. Kero." Since there was no mention of her letting them know what had happened to her at that point, or ever (and they might have liked to hear that she had made captain), I thought that they were probably gone by that time. What does depress me a little, though, is that Warrl didn't show up with Tarma in Winds of Change. In one of the Vows and Honor books, he tells Tarma that he'd like it if the Shin'a'in goddess would take him with Tarma in the afterlife. Granted, the goddess doesn't have to do anything she doesn't feel like, but I had always hoped that she would give him that. Maybe she did and he was just busy that day. :) Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Apr 1996 21:51:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Becky Anne Christensen To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Totally TOTALLY off-subject! It wasn't that hard, it would have been kinda boring if they had to explain everything, it would make it move slower than it already was. Most of it was explained, and I assume we'll learn more as the series goes on, if the series goes on. Lady Becky The more that you read, the more things you will know. I'd be more than happy to make a homepage fr the list. With everyone's info, and links to their homepages, if available. I'd only stick the info up their that you would want, I understand you probably don't want everyone in the world to know everything about you. Maybe just name, e-mail, homepage, and *brief* description. (We're talking like 3 lines.) Also maybe have links of interest to us, and of course a link to Mel's pages on how to subscribe. So, what does everybody think, should we have our own personal page? Actually I'll do a Misty page anyway, but this seems like a lot of fun. Any suggestions? What ages did everybody start reading? Mom keeps telling me I startes > reading when I was two. She was reading Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear to me and I was Well, I don't know when I started to read, but I do know that I had an adult reading level by the time I was four. I can remember reading "The Wizard of Oz" for myself, at around that time. I know that I got into trouble for reading adult novels when I was in 1st grade. My teacher called my mother in for a Parent-Teacher meeting and expressed her worry that I was reading books that were "unsuitable" to my age. She felt that I might do my brain some damage if I persisted in reading books that were "too hard for a young child." Of course, my mother just laughed and said that I could read anything I wanted. I spent part of that summer reading "The Last Magician" by John Jakes. This is the same guy who wrote "The Bastard" and that entire Bicentennial Series. Let me tell you, this book would have caused my teacher to having a fainting spell; it had a main character named "Cham Hell-Eyes" and oodles of sex, violence, bad language, and immoral behavior (not to mention necromancy and demonism). Altogether a fabu foray into the realm of Fant-Fict. Gee, I had almost forgotten that book. I guess this means that I didn't get my intro to fantasy via Tolkien. Oh, well. I'm new to the list and decided this was something I could answer without looking too much like a newbie. ;) I started reading around three, I think. My kindegarten teacher had a conference with my mother worried about my not reading. Then my mom told me to start reading in class and read the most difficult book there the first day afterward. I remember that! Do you know, the law in Australia considers magic 'impossible', and recently a practitioner of the magickal arts was brought up against the magistrates by some disgruntled client. The Judge stated that the client had paid for 'occult' services, and because there was no such thing legally as the 'occult' or magic, the magician was acquitted. Hi Sean! and welcome. I believe that there were plenty of men on Lesbos; it is a modern-day myth that it was all women. It was a very inhabited island where, actually, quite a few battles were fought by the Athenians. Sappho did live there, though, with her husband (yes, she had one). Also on Lesbos, and also probably married, lived her female lover. By the by, I prefer the word gay to lesbian. I only know one or two lesbians who prefer to refer to themselves and their friends as "lesbians." For most of them, "dyke" is powerful term whereas "lesbian" is a clinical term. I think that most of them have a fantasy about being featured in "Dykes to Beware of." On the other hand, in deference to Catherine, I don't really think that many of them are particularly feminist. Who knows what they might prefer in that case. May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences.
