Message-ID: <08APR96.24716003.0073.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> Okay, I apologize to all you speed-readers out there for doubting you. I talked to my father over the 3day weekend, and he explained the concept of speed-reading to me -- it is, as someone said, simply that your eyes take in whole phrases or lines or even paragraphs at a time. Some people take courses to develop this skill, but some people develop it naturally just by reading a whole hell of a lot. My father, who currently reads at the same speed I do, could, when he was in practice, read 2000 words per minute, which is, yes, five pages. Comprehension is not affected for people who speed-read -- in fact, when my mother took the course, her comprehension went up. However, my father says that he enjoyed books less when he was reading that quickly, because he didn't slow down to savor words and interesting turns of phrase, the sound and feel of the book. So, I've decided not to worry about my "slow" (five or six hundred words a minute, ish) reading speed. Reading is one of the great sensual pleasures of my life, and I don't really WANT to rush through it, any more than you necessarily want to rush through hot showers or ice cream or ... whatever. And anyway, how am I going to improve my writing if I don't pay close attention to HOW these writers that I admire are conveying what I'm getting out of their books? God is in the details, they say. At least, she meets women in lesbian bars. Dunno what she does with them, but there's such a thing as an educated guess. I also hear things about John Travolta, and Michael Ball was supposed to have had quite the affair with a male member of the British royal family. For you Americans who aren't musical theater fans, Michael Ball is a singer, very popular in England, but not remotely well-known in the States. You may have heard his voice, though, since he plays Marius on both the London and the Complete recordings of Les Miserables, and Alex in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love; the song "Love Changes Everything" has been fairly popular, and if you've heard a recording of that, it's likely to have been Michael Ball singing it. He's also all over the place on the Andrew Lloyd Webber Premier Collection Encore CD, which is all-around a great CD, with Barbra Streisand singing "Memory," and all kinds of other good stuff. Anyway, Michael Ball is my very favorite tenor, (though I extend my apologies to Anthony Warlow and Brent whatshisname from Kiss of the Spider Woman, who were close in the running.) But, back on topic -- inasmuch as I was to begin with. Other openly gay or bisexual performers, should anyone be interested, include Elton John, Marlon Brando, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and my very favorite actor of all time (well, one of them), James Dean. Hmm, come to think of it, they're all bisexual. Just a bit of gossip for the day. ObMisty: Wow, would James Dean ever have made a fabulous Vanyel. He had that moody, melancholy integrity to him, and he was absolutely riveting. Every time James comes on the screen, I find myself physically incapable of looking away from him. All the men in power who are principle characters are villains: Mornelithe, Darkwind's dad, Ancar, Charliss, Tremane, the King of Rethwellan in Oathbreakers, etc. The only good men in power are kept outside the storyline (King Faramentha, the younger brother in Oathbreakers (once he comes to power the story is over), and Randale (he is incapacitated by illness and sort of peripheral to the story)). There's a very good reason for that too, it's called survival! It's damn hard to continue the race when more than half are totally gay and won't consider sex with an opposite sexed person for the purposes of begetting a child. Then again, there are people like me who are not having kids if they can help it, which isn't good either. The Mailing List ------------------------ Version 2.0, May 24th 1995 Compiled by Melanie Dymond Harper New in version 2.0: Rewritten to reflect change of site. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.2: information about other ML-related groups (AOL, Genie & USENET); explicit address for feedback. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 464 *********************************
