Skan was also a good leader (even if he wasn't human.) There are also plenty of men in power such as Elcarth, Kyril, Teren. Okay, Seanna, I see your point, and I think the situation you describe, with a Kal'enedral being sexually active for emotional rather than physical reasons, may well be possible. I don't think, however, that's the case with Tarma and Kethry. With a book, you can't say that because it could happen, it did. You need textual support. Now, IIRC, Tarma and Kethry showed very little physical warmth toward one another in the books or the short stories. As I remember it, they rarely touched. If I'm forgetting something important, please, refresh my memory, O ye listmates. But I don't remember much physical intimacy between them, and I don't see how we can infer a secret liaison without some kind of hinting along those lines. When I say physical intimacy, I'm talking about the kind of friendly touching that people who are close often share, especially people who have been sexually involved. Playing with each other's hair, snuggling together in their tent, taking each other by the hand. Something like that would maybe imply to me that there was more going on beneath the surface than Misty was 'fessing up to between them. But I don't remember that kind of evidence. To me, the major argument against this Tarma & Kethry as Shieldmates theory, outside of Tarma claiming she doesn't sleep with anyone and Kethry claiming she has no interest in women, is that I can't see why they'd try so hard to cover it up. They have no personal prejudices, and since they pose as lovers, they can't be too terrified of what the neighbors will think. They deny the existence of a sexual relationship even to their dearest friends, and they're still denying it in By the Sword, when they're fully independant with no one to impress anymore. Don't you think that by the time they're living on their own with no one but each other, they'd be past the point of lying about their personal lives? I just don't see the character motivation for this one. I sympathize with *wanting* them to have been lovers. I've *wanted* a major female couple in Misty's world for years, but I don't think Tarma and Kethry are it. How about we add to the list of books we think Misty should write: Keren and Ylsa's youth. They were, after all, "longtime" lovers, so they should have plenty of history together, and plenty of adventures, having both been Heralds and all. And poor Ylsa gets to be in Arrows for all of like three pages before she gets offed. She gets screwed for screen-time worse than Keren and Sherrill do. Message-ID: <960409173048.1a42-+AT+-bpl.org> Since the debate has arisen again, I will re-tender my great unification theory with the assurance that those of you who have read it before can skip the darn thing.... I think that "unbonded" choosings are extremely rare, and only occur when a future Monarch's Own is already lined up in the sights of the current Monarch's Own Companion, or when it is absolutely necessary for the Companions, as a group, to communicate with a person who is disqualified to be a Herald by reason of another calling (like Karal.) Jisa, Vanyel theorized, would have an unbonded Companion until her mother died. But he theorized that well in advance of Randale's death. By the time Jisa was old enough to be Chosen, I think the MOC was well aware that Shavri would suicide when her lifebonded died. And I think it was also obvious by that time that Randale wasn't going to last long enough for Jisa to make it through formal training as a Herald anyway. On top of which, it would have been a waste of "horsepower" to have a Companion working with Jisa who could be out, finding and training, a fully bonded Herald. I suspect that what usually happens when the Monarch's Own dies is that the MOC looks around for the best MO candidate *for that particular Monarch* and then pulls rank. I.e., if Taver wanted to bump Yfandes and bond with Vanyel, Yfandes would have been bumped. Misty gives us no textual evidence about what happens to the first Companion of a Herald who is suddenly "promoted" to Monarch's Own. We do know that it is usually a trainee, or a Herald who is near Haven (and is presumably acquainted with the Court) who is Chosen by the MOC. Trainees bonds are less well "set", so those Companions may be free to Chose again. Or perhaps (for the sake of the Monarch's Own's stability!) Herald, Companion and MOC form a triad. What I'm saying is that the Monarch's Own is essentially a different kind of being than most Companions. A more powerful being, yes, but different. Which may explain why it is easier for Rolan to talk to other Companions, who are at least similar to him, than to humans (unless the human in question has a strong gift of Mindhearing.) So, for the average Companion, choosing a lifepartner means knowing that if you Chose someone with the gifts that make a good Monarch's Own, you may someday find yourself usurped by the MOC. Rather than not bonding, I think they probably bond and hope for the best. After all, the Gifts of Heralds develop more strongly because of the contact with their Companions. My mother likes to read, but usually takes at least a week to read a novel. She can't understand how I get through books so quickly. I haven't done much walking and reading at the same time recently, but does anyone else read and watch TV at the same time? When someone died, the name was available to use again. There was an interesting scene where Shevek's mother, who hadn't seen her son for years read about him in the news and knew it had to be her son because although he was young to have made a scientific discovery "any other Shevek would be even younger". Just think, a whole society with recycled names! If someone as competent as Elcarth taught her to shield (whether her gifts were under control or not) then wouldn't her shields have stayed even when her gift went wacko in Arrows Flight? Did Elcarth actually teach her wrong? Geez, you've guys have gotten me questioning a lot of things since I joined this list. This is not all together a bad thing by the way. It's fun, really. You know, I'm amazed at how much better it seems now. It's almost like watching a totally new movie, but I know I'm just catching all the "grown-up" stuff that I had no clue about at seven or eight. As long as I've got your attention, anybody know if I can get the sound-track? I just love the title song. Frankly, every once in a while I pick up a mystery, or my grandma bugs me enough that I read a romance, but none of them have ever inspired me to write my own (I started writing two days after I started the Riftwar saga, my second seires), or wonder about succesion of thrones, alternate systems of knowledge, technology, and living. Fantasy has enriched my life beyond compare, and I wouldn't be the same without it. I constantly find myself thinking what my favorite characters would do in my place, or what a Comapnion would think about what I was about to do.
