I actually think he did - I've discussed it on the list before but I'm not sure if others agreed with me at all. There's evidence that things like mage-gift are specific to a physical body (Kethry getting demon-transferred to a non-mage-gifted body & losing mage-gift), but Van has kept his mage-gift. The figure in the grove with Van is Stef/'Lendel - my guess is that he's got the abilities that he had in both lives. The reason that he doesn't exhibit mage-gift directly in the Winds trilogy is that it would confuse Elspeth & Co, who don't know that Stef/'Lendel were the same person/soul. Remember, he did sculpt the grove that Nyara & Skif went to. Stef/'Lendel appearing more fuzzy than Van (ie exhibiting less power/focus/control) could be for a number of reasons: 1. Deliberate, to avoid confusing the matter and keep people's concentration on Van. 2. A side-effect of Van being the main focus for the Forest's energies (and hence less energy available for Stef) 3. [I don't like this one.] Stef/'Lendel simply not having the power/control that Vanyel acquired over the course of his life, paid for with blood & sweat and tears. The reason I don't like that one is that Stef/'Lendel's had an awfully long time to catch up & a dedicated teacher.. Personally, I think it's deliberate. > 2. Same thing with the Companions - Yfandes gets to be with Vanyel > forever, but what about Gala? Yes.. The Gala thing is not nice.. The optimist in me half-hopes that it was just a case of Stef/'Lendel keeping Gala out of sight to avoid confusion and long explanations - Elspeth & Co *know* that Stef wasn't a Herald.. The alternative is that Gala was atoning for her mistakes or simply became the equivalent of an old friend that Stef/'Lendel knew years and years ago. Remember, Stef/'Lendel spent much more time with Van/Yfandes than he did with Gala. Personally, I don't believe this one - a companion bond's not the type of thing to forget, even if the companion does break it to save your life when she's about to suicide. No, I wouldn't put it past Van & Stef/Lendel to have just kept the fact that Stef was/is Tylendal quiet. Neither of them are unfamiliar with the 'need to know' type motives & it would only confuse matters. :) Cheers, Kerry. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 18:03:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Becky Anne Christensen To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Big-list Message-ID: On Wed, 10 Apr 1996, Mannaheim wrote: > I'd like to know who all is working on this Big-List thing k? > And BTW, I'd appreciate it if whoever is working on the list wouldn't put > my address, if they somehow have it, which I hope no one does. > > Mannaheim > > -=-=-=-patw-+AT+-clark.edu-=-=-=-Mannaheim-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- > "He teaches like Speedy Gonzalez on a caffeine high." > =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- > At the moment, Heather is taking all personal info, and I'm working on getting a homepage up for the list. "-I- wait for him for 10 years. -I- bond with him when no one else believed in him. -I- nurse him through his suicide attempts. -We- go through flame and lightning and mage-fire together and now -You- want to bond with him? I don't think so!" *grin* I just can't see Yfandes getting bumped somehow.. Might as well try to bump Savil. > What I'm saying is that the Monarch's Own is essentially a different kind > of being than most Companions. I think they'd bond lightly to potential Monarch's Owns. You can't tear away a Herald's other half and give him/her a new one and expect everything to be hunky-dory for either the Herald or the Companion. You don't -want- that kind of trauma in someone who's supposed to be a stable advisor to the Circle & Monarch. Especially when the herald doesn't know the true significance of the new Companion being Grove-born. IMO. (I've given up on the humble bit.. no one was buying it *grin*). Cheers, Kerry. I just remember reading. I know it was before kindergarten, because I was reading out of a third grade textbook in kintergarten. It was still easy, but they didn't want us to have anything more dificult. Then in first grade, I took the GATE test, aced it, and went to the GATE school, where everybody was on advanced reading levels. By second grade I was reading the Hobbit. My parents don't remember when I started reading either, they never pushed me to read, they didn't teach me either. Which means I must have taught myself somehow, don't know how, but nobody else taught me. It's a mystery, ooooooo. Lady Becky The more that you read, the more things you will know. Heartily heartily seconded.. One of the things my gay/bi/whatever friends hate the most is having to keep two sets of friends separate - the gay ones, who are comfortable with it & the straight ones who often aren't.. Joking about it is probably the best way to indicate that you're comfortable with it.. The other is what Heather mentioned - asking advice on things never hurts either. :) > Coolest thing that ever happened to me. I'm getting weird looks from all the people at work here for laughing at what I'm programming.. :) Cheers, Kerry. "I never give them hell. (ME: "No, that's the author, not the title... ") I tend to read at work when things are very slow, and the people in the office across the hall *always* are doing that. And I hate it when they ask what it's about... tried to explain _By the Sword_ to a non fantasy related adult type professor person and he just glazed over. Humph. I may switch over to audiobooks just for the convenience.. although I don't think I'll find much fantasy on audio. And JSTEIN... er... something-+AT+-AOL.COM mentioned that >I haven't done much walking and reading at the same time recently, but does >anyone else read and watch TV at the same time? Well, I am notorious for listening to the radio, talking on the telephone, and reading at the same time. If TV, then I watch during commercials... To tie the two threads together, I'd like to try listening to an audiobook and reading at the same time (not the same book... because I'd be so ahead of the text). Which brings me to the Misty point: I'd hate to have a Misty audiobook or even movie, just because of the voices. I have my own idea of voices and appearances of characters (some say my imagination is stereo, full-color) and seeing them not match on screen would ruin it for me. Whew.
