My history teacher, though....we have to do a final project in my African history class, and we can use any form: dance, research paper, lecture presentation, web pages...or a story! Needless to say, I chose to write a story, about voodoo and santoriam which was as close to fantasy as I could come in history class. Have to see what the grade will be, but I don't think it'll get marked down because I chose to be a bit fantasy-like. *****LADY JAGUAR***** Leader of the Cat People Lady in Green LGMCB Conspirator #14, DHTBB Lobe #3! Someone else mentioned about naming a character who was a strong feminine female. Heather, with her examples, shows there's a lot of them out there. I have one or two more to add. Minerva from _Minerva Wakes_ by Holly Lisle. This is more of a combination of fantasy and 20th century than straight high fantasy, but hey, it works.... Minerva is a mom who chases after her kids, the maternal instinct making her heroic more than the physical prowess. She deals with all sorts of strange things to find her kids, but she doesn't care--she just wants to *find them* and get them back, and so everyone better stay out of her way. Polgara from _The Belgariad,_ _The Malloreon,_ and _Belgarath the Sorcerer_ by David Eddings. This one may be a bit contraversial, but I think she's more feminine than masculine. She seemed to have a rough exterior at times, but at points throughout the series, you could tell that she was really feminine at heart. Not some archetype ice maiden, just someone who knew that she had to do things, and resigned herself to the fulfillment of the Prophecy, without comprimising the female she actually was. Her sister Beldsomething, yes, she was a good daughter and got married right away, but, remember, Pol got married too, eventually. And she was all ready to be a wife to Durnik with no problem. There they are. Flame away! (Rynath has Firestarting, so be careful). Pratchett has audiobooks out? !! Anyhow, what I meant was that where I am, there's not a lot of good fantasy audiobooks, or so I've seen. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. But the bookstore by me has a poor audiobook selection. Last Audiobook I bought from them was... er... "A X-Mas Carol" performed by Patrick Stewart. That was good. And it's fantasy too, I suppose, in a sense. The problem with there being a Misty audiobook is that usually one person just reads the book out loud. :P Blech! Karal figures out that it would be hard on those left behind to know that a deceased Herald could come back, if only as a Companion. So that is one reason. Also, remember in By The Sword, Kero tried to tell Eldan that the Companion was a Spirit, and she couldn't get it out and said instead that they were special. If Rolan can make Talia forget about something as special as watching a Groveborn Companion come into the world, then surely other Companions can supress realization in their Heralds. Message-ID: <960412222141_190159350-+AT+-emout06.mail.aol.com> second attempt. Thanks for fixing things, Mel... Kerry objected to my suggestion that Yfandes' might get "bumped" by the MOC. Well, yes, in that instance I sort of agree with you. *I* wouldn't want to cross Yfandes either. Actually, I favor the notion of the MOC, new MO, and first Companion forming a triad. This actually solves a question which someone (I forgot who, sorry) brought up in the Talamir thread. I.e., why doesn't the MO change when the Monarch does? Well, if the MO had two Companions, the MOC and their first Companion, then it would be easy for the MOC to withdraw from the bond and go and Choose anew. Not possible in a case like Talia's of course, where she has bonded only to the MOC, but it's a notion. (It's such a pretty theory! Too bad there's not one jot of textual evidence to support it .) re: Gala , I think that during Stef's long life she returned as Companion and found a new Chosen -- and by the time he died the second time, she was busy elsewhere. (but loved.) Which brings me to the nature of the Herald/Companion bond. We know it is a soulbond, at least of some kind, from the evidence of Elspeth, who, when she bonded to Need, said that it was just like being Chosen. Again, most of what we know about soulbonds is in relation to Need. Kero's refusal to rely on the blade during her early training meant that the bond set in lightly. Kethry's constant reliance on the gifts of the blade meant a very deep bond formed. And yet both of them were unharmed by the loss of the soulbond when Need was passed to the next person. And Elspeth didn't even *notice* that Need was gone until Nyara was well out of sight! Kero was badly affected when Need was lost in the river, but since Kero (who is remarkably chary of personal commitments or bonds) had been carrying Need in the packs instead of on her person, that may, in part, have been a mild ruse on Need's part to be carried more closely to her bondmate. Kero's distress was also the blade's best chance of getting rescued from the water, so the evidence can be taken in more than one light. When Gala renounced Tylendel, she made *very* sure that he would be aware of the loss. So it may be that a soulbond can be undone without harm, freeing a Herald for the Monarch's Own Companion. Those >border on the ridiculous. Most people here that have said positive >things said they've liked the Incarnations series and the early Xanth >books, but the last ten or so are just plain silly. Ok, I agree with that point. I got my start on fantasy like most everyone else here, with the Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, and A Wrinkle in Time (assigned by my wonderful 6th grade teacher...whom I didn't inform that I had already read it ), but Piers Anthony was responsible for eventually leading me to Misty. There are very few authors that I like so well I feel compelled to buy everything they write, and he fell into that category until the Xanth series went into ad-nauseum mode. The Incarnations of Immortality were my favorite, but I also loved the Apprentice Adept series, the Orn, Omnivore, Ox trilogy, Mute (yes, he *can* write a stand alone book!), and the Mode series. Of course Misty has fallen firmly into the "must have it all" category, but I guess I'm a little defensive of my old friends too. Off to the used bookstore to buy out the Lackey section once again... I've been reading the mail for the last week, and I thought it might be proper to introduce myself instead of jumping right in with a comment. I'm Jeanette from Singapore, and I'm 14. I think I'm one of the youngest members of this list? I've only been reading ML for about a year and a half now, so please forgive me if I seem to be very unsure of what I'm talking about. I'm also very new to the Net, so please forgive me if I make any dumb mistakes. Thanx in advance!
