In AFlight (IIRC), Talia and Elspeth are both summoned to the Grove by some compelling force. Granted, neither is _in_ the Grove when Gwena (forgive me if I'm getting the names wrong, me-+AT+-school...) appears, but Talia sees the Grove glowing eerily and sees Gwena emerge from it. I have been wondering that FOREVER!!!! whew > does it feel good to get THAT off my chest . . . > > Zhai'helleva! > > Lady Moonsong The full story of how Misty got her nickname: Once upon a time, there was a girl called Mercedes Lackey. However, Mercedes is a kind of long name, and so her friends called her "Dee". This girl (young woman, actually) became a camp counselor one year. At this particular camp, the children, out of respect, had to call all their elders "Miss," "Mr.", or "Mrs." as appropriate. Thus, the young woman found herself being called "Miss Dee" all the time. Ass you know, children (or anyone) will slur a name effectively given enough time, so by the end of the summer, she had been named "Misty," and it stuck. She seems to like the name, she's never complained of her fans using it, and she even signes "Herald Myste" in some of the Valdemar forewards. There's a thread on this topic in rec.arts.sf.written, in which some idiot complains that all her fans are so pretentious for using a familiar name for an author, and all the Misty fans disagree. Rather amusing, since she's _encouraged_ the use of her nickname, as opposed to other authors whose named get shortened without necessarily wanting them to be. my $.02 mortaine -- mortaine-+AT+-ufcp.com http://www.ufcp.com/employee/steph/steph2.htm ============================================ Humility is like Zen; once you think you've got it, you don't. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Apr 1996 13:32:51 -0400 From: Lisa Gregory To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Stef's ghost Was: Re: Stef's Duties Message-ID: <199604131732.NAA01033-+AT+-gramercy.ios.com> Kerry said: >Stef/'Lendel appearing more fuzzy than Van (ie exhibiting less >power/focus/control) could be for a number of reasons: >1. [I don't like this one.] Stef/'Lendel simply not having the power/control > that Vanyel acquired over the course of his life, paid for with blood & > sweat and tears. When Stef goes off to talk with Skif and Nyara, he's said to become "gradually less ephemeral and more solid, until at last he seemed almost normal" (although still transparent). This would support 1 and 2 above. I think it could also be that it is deliberate but that it's just that it's harder to be more substantial, and when they first appear, Stef doesn't bother much with his form. Van does, because he has to convince everybody that he is who he says, and seeing is believing (or at least helps). But when Stef leaves with Skif and Nyara, the book says that Skif is more comfortable once Stef is more solid. Stef might have sensed that Skif would feel this way, so he put forth the extra effort in order to be hospitable. Finally (just to add another piece to the puzzle), when Yfandes appears, she's said to be as strong or stronger than Vanyel's form. So, maybe it's a combination of how much power you have inherently and how much effort you're putting out. In other words, when Yfandes is relaxing and not doing much to make herself look solid, she could be more substantial than Stef when he's using all of his energy on his form. I really appreciate the benefit of your experience. Okay, and I just read _The Eagle and The Nightingales_ this week, and I have to ask if anyone else is bothered by this series. It seems that the lines are so clear: Free Bards Good, Guild Bards Bad, by definition. The Church (which I think was *way* too obviously Christianity--the Sacrificed God--with even the story about casting demons out and having them go into a herd of pigs?) was also almost universally Bad. In fact, I found it a little off-putting that it was so obviously based on Christianity and so *obviously* completely antithetical to anything even close to good about that world. The final group (rather a large group, actually) that bothered me was anybody involved in technology. The owners of the "manufactories" were so obviously part of the Evil Capitalist Regime That Oppressed So Many Until The Wonderful Government Stepped In, Huzzah. The artificer or whatever he was called, inventor, whatever, was completely unconcerned with anything besides science. The Deliambrens didn't even really have emotions. I just get sick of the portrayal of people who are involved in science and technology as completely emotionless at best or scheming monsters at worst. I expected better. It seems to me like this is the series Misty has chosen to Say Something--I mean, the values in her Valdemar books and the things she sees as wrong with our world today in the urban fantasies are pretty general wrongs. It disturbs me that when one of my favorite authors decides to Say Something, I find what she's saying pretty much antithetical to my beliefs. I'm a rabid capitalist and a physics major [and a Christian, at least for now]--and guess what? I have emotions! I have ethics! Yes, indeedy, I have thoughts beyond my lab or profit (profit, ha! I'm a college student; I don't get any!)! Go figure! She could have done much, *much* better than she did. I don't think ANYONE has actually WITNESSED a groveborn Companion being born. They just appear right? It's at the beginning of Arrows Flight. She doesn't actually *witness* it, but she was present at Gwena's birth. She and Elspeth feel called to go to the grove; there's a mysterious glow, the world seems to spin around, and when she recovers there's a companion there whom she doesn't recognize. It's probably the closest anyone can come to witnessing it. I had to look it up - guess it's time to re-read :-).
