The Free Bards are a new, small, elite force. They have the luxury of being good because there hasn't been time or opportunity for corruption. They're small and selective and a good number are magicians, which should help their natural luck. Also, they try to keep it so noone that isn't a Free Bard really knows about them, as the Free Bards rather than just any minstrels. It's not that peculiar that, so far, all of them have been good people. The Church isn't universally evil. Lady Ardis, the priest that married Lark and Wren, the doctor that tried to help Rune, the monk that helped the Robin and the Kestrel, and the head of the mixed species church in E & N are all good church officials. And the ideals expressed by the Church and the programs the Church was supposed to run and the products of the Church were oftentimes good. It wasn't the religion that Misty was criticizing, it was the corrupt hierarchy of the Church and the laziness and selfishness that one finds in any large group but which is especially disappointing in those of the cloth which Misty criticized. > The > final group (rather a large group, actually) that bothered me was > anybody involved in technology. Will you be upset with me if I say it's just art imitating life? Not the emotionlessness of those involved with technology, but the exploitation the merchants and industrialists were willing to inflict. They've done it right here on planet Earth, why shouldn't it happen on a fictional plane? Now, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning on the emotionlessness displayed by everyone involved with technology. The Deliambrens did not react in a human fashion, but why should they? I wouldn't say they were emotionless, so much as triggers very different from that of the others. They didn't react the same because they had different problems. I'm very > disappointed. Are you disappointed because she didn't tow your ideological line? I didn't find anything in her book that challenged Christianity itself. It did question the _hierarchy_ which is a part of some sects, but the religion itself she didn't address, except to say that there were some positive aspects. She didn't attack technology, but she did point out that it wasn't a cure all for everything, or what did you think she meant everytime Vanyel Demonsbane said, "magic can't fix everything, it's just a tool"? And there have already been times when capitalism hurt people until government stepped in, it's an historical happening. Capitalism hasn't fixed everything, and won't; Christianity hasn't fixed everything, and won't; and technology hasn't fixed everything, and won't. That's all Misty said, and I'd love for you to show me where that isn't true. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ L'Enfant Terrible Wanna Warrior Protocol Officer The WitchQueen ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "You haven't found god yet? Book about Iftel; turns out it's no place special. 8. Companions given even *more* convenient super powers. (i.e. "We could always do magic, we just chose not to tell you.") 7. New collaboration with Robert Jordan makes novel stretch out to twelve nine-hundred-page books. 6. Di Tregarde / Vanyel crossover. 5. Finally writes that third book in the Vows and Honor series. 4. Turns out all books after _Magic's Promise_ were a dream; Vanyel wakes up and goes back to being happy with Stefan. 3. Misty names characters after prominent members on the mailing list. 2. Last book in the Mage Storms trilogy combined with parts of the Mage Winds books to provide the title _Breaking Wind._ and the number one surprise plot twist in the next Misty novel: 1. A fellow Singaporean! Greetings! About the books you missed, if you're just talking about Velgarth books, you left out The Oathbound, Oathbreakers, and By the Sword, which I personally group as a trilogy. As for recommendations, my own favourites by far are the Last Herald-Mage Trilogy (followed by the Arrows trilogy, with the rest of Misty's books trailing far behind), so read them quick! Especially Magic's Pawn and Magic's Price... IMHO the LHM and Arrows trilogy are much more grittier than the newer books like the Storm trilogy which *IMHO again* has too much "fluff" in them for my taste, what with baby gryphlets (ugh!) and all... characterwise too, those in the newer books feel shallower, more 2-dimensional to me... Anyway, I digress - guess I just wanted to say that if you liked the newer books, you'll probably love the LHM trilogy. ONe way to do it is go to your PO (Yes, again, you're going to become like family there...) and get an international postal money order, or go to your bank (or your parents bank) and get a foriegn currency check, for US dollars. That's about all I can think of right now, and I hope it helps. QO has quite a few foriegn members, so it must be possible somehow! Good luck! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lady 'Reesa<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Just one final thought. It's found in other primate species as well. A study in Bonobos (pygmy chimpanzees) from late last year or earlier this year mentions that sex is an important means of communication for them. Dominance, playfulness, and apology are some of the emotions I remember from the article as being expressed through sex. Just thought that I'd add on :). obMisty: There aren't any primates in Velgarth other than people. amy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Apr 1996 14:30:19 -0400 From: Soljan-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Two things: Kethry/Tarma and White Gryphon Message-ID: <960414143018_469620299-+AT+-emout09.mail.aol.com> >2. I had wondered the same thing about that a couple of years ago. I saw an article about the sequel to _Plains of Passage_. It mentioned that Ms. Auel thought it would take her "as long, maybe even longer" to complete it. It took Ms. Auel 9 years to complete _Plains of Passage_. It's already been about 5 years - so, four more years??? :( **#**Lady Crysania**#** "All Beauty held A Lady In Green (ALIG) in bondage is Aka "Amy" Beauty lost" amason-+AT+-stmarys-ca.edu -Vanyel, Demonsbane ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Apr 1996 15:20:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Vivian Choh To: Mercedes Lackey mailing list Subject: lifebonds Message-ID: Hey all, Sorry to bring up the lifebond question again. (I can hear the groans all the way from here). Simple question really: We hear from Keren? that Teren was married, had kids, the white picket fence until his Companion came along. Suddenly, he found it easy to abandon his old way of life, and that he really didn't love his wife anymore. Well, what do you think would've happened if he had been lifebonded at the time, i.e., what d'you happens if a Companion Choses one of a lifebonded pair, but the other doesn't get Chosen? In particular, I'm thinking of a lifebonded "ordinary" couple, not a Bard/Herald/Healer. Does the unchosen follow the chosen to Haven, get set up like a blue? (like Natoli?). We HAVE seen an example of lifebonding prior to choosing (Vanyel/'Lendel) although most of time we see it the other way around (Ylsa/Keren/Sherrill, Talia/Dirk were all chosen before they acknowledged their lifebonds) but Vanyel was not an "ordinary" citizen, living a completely different life such that he had to totally uproot his life - he was already living with 'Lendel if you see what I mean - so he doesn't really count (Wow! how's that for a run-on sentence?). Bard Stephen doesn't count either for the same reason. I guess I am questioning what happens to the other of an "ordinary" pair from which one is chosen. If the other is not lifebonded, then he/she gets left behind, but if the other is lifebonded, then he/she packs up and follows the chosen to Haven? (I am assuming that the lifebonding is not restricted to those with any of the gifts (healer/hearld/bard) - BUT this assumption may be wrong - does anybody know for sure? - is lifebonding only possible between those with any of the gift/with the potential for any of the gifts?) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivian Choh "I'm all that I claim to be.
