Lewis. I also remember, in elementary school, reading Dragonlance, the Hero & the Crown, Tailchaser's Song, the Prydain Chronicles, The Last Unicorn, and countless Juvenile Fiction books that were, in fact, fantasy. (Elementary school was 1981-86, for those of you who are counting on your fingers). Of course, there were movies, too. I remember several animated movies from my vague & foggy youth: Wizards, The Hobbit, Fire & Ice, and The Last Unicorn. And The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson's (IMO) magnum opus, which is one of my favorite movies ever. Also, can't forget Star Wars. I was literally raised on Star Wars, as my father was a huge fan (took his youth group to see it 14 times in the theater). I remember being quite young when I went to The Empire Strikes Back and debating with my dad whether or not Vader was lying about this whole father thing, and I remember seeing Return of the Jedi in a mall on vacation, opening night. Anyone know the years on these? Long time ago. Star Wars could be considered sci fi, but it's so high heroic that it feels like fantasy, and what is The Force if not magic? I also picked up the first Elfquest graphic novel in what must have been something like 1984 or 85, and EQ remains one of my true loves, the only comic book I follow except Sandman. First Misty in, hm, August of 1987. Oathbound, in a Washington, D.C. airport bookstore. But that's getting into junior high. I also think I remember that the Companion will live if a message of vital importance needs to get through after their Herald is dead, then the other Companions take that one off and it dies...I don't think the books ever said if the Companions suicided...maybe will themselves to detah or die form link-shock when the link is broken so quickly. I remember what Ahrodie(sp?) did when she repudiated Tylendel, but I don't know if that can be called suicide or buying time for the others to get there.... I mean, it might have worked as a stand-alone or perhaps even short story but as the third book in a trilogy, it is a flop! It doesn't advance the overall plot or reveal more abuot the Velgarth universe, it doesn't tie in with the Storm books (like broken campaign promises?), it doesn't have even enough real action or excitement. The main plot is sort of sentient-being-against-nature, with a subtext about relationships between parents and children. Furthermore, i recently read Sydney Biddle Barrows' book with regard to her life as a madame. One of the reasons she became a madame was that first she could not get a job for which she was trained ie in purchasing and marketing and the "escort" service whose phones she manned was run by a MAN who mistreated the girls, stole their money and demaned that they work 7 days a week and would provide such services to any whacko with money Sydney rightly so decided she could do better. Her girls were not the endangered street walker we see so often on the news (however i am forced to point out that if prostitution was a legally run institution with laws to protect the girls and guys and mandate health requirements they wouldnt BE endangered street walkers) but intelligent college students, literate, trying to be something else other than and escorts but using the money as a stepping stone who were highly paid and well treated by clients and the business--they even had retirement and investment plans!!!!! to get back to the point, i believe Misty is drawing a parallel which we are uncomfortable with as a society--prostitutes are human beings with hopes, needs, dreams and sometimes they really are happy and they really need acceptance, just like the rest of us, and our society creates a situation whereby for the most part they are an illtreated segment of our population okay, flame away!!! There is apparently a wealth of desperately mediocre King out there, and so if mediocre is your thing, you should have no trouble. I read *It* last summer, and it blew me away. Bar none, any genre, one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I didn't find it quite as scary as other people I've known did, but I thought it was totally enthralling, and very well-written. I also read and really liked *Insomnia,* *The Stand,* and *The Shining* but that's it. So I'm not really an expert. But, wow, *It* was a terrific book. I'd recommend it to anyone. But for the love of God, please, don't see the movie. I don't think the screenwriter even read the book. First of all, it's too long and too psychological to really make a good movie -- even a miniseries. So much of the drama is internal, as It really plays off each character's individual fears, and there's a lot more character development than actual adventure-type horror movie action. Second, this movie had no budget to speak of. And they changed so much! *What were they thinking?* My favorite character, Ben, was supposed to be this sweet, introspective, sort of lonely man. King makes a major point early on in the book about how he goes to the same bar, alone, every weekend, even though he's a major rich architect and could be anywhere in the world, but the bartender has never seen him drunk. In the movie (he's played by John Ritter), he's completely toasted with a whore on his arm in the first scene. Excuse me? READ THE BOOK! And the comedian, can't think of his name, he's one of the first people to decide they have to face It in the book, but in the movie he's trying to get out of it through the whole thing. Why? God only knows. READ THE BOOK! Worst of all, it's the most sexist thing I've ever seen. Now, the main characters in the book are this group of kids who hang out together (at least in half the book; in the other half, they've grown up), and only one of them was female: Beverly. This is fine, because at that age, most kids do play in single-gender groups, so it seemed realistic to have a bunch of boys and this sort of tomboyish girl. And Beverly was very cool. Well, in the movie, she's always cooing and flirting and kissing the boys, and it's just pathetic. In the book, she was the one who carried the slingshot when they went into the sewers to kill It, because she was the best shot. It wasn't a big issue, she just had terrific aim, so she was artillery. In the movie, when it's revealed that she can outshoot any of the guys, there's this bit about how some higher power must be giving her the ability to do this. Can't be just because sheoutcooled the guys. Heck, no. Gaak. At any rate, regarding *It*: Definitely read the book. Definitely skip the movie. Although I enjoyed seeing it, just to yell at the TV and count the places where it became obvious that the writer didn't bother to READ THE BOOK. But read the book first, so the movie doesn't make you jaded and ruin it for you.
