Ah, 'scuse me, Mannaheim, but you're a tad mistaken. AFAIK, the Ladies aren't necessarily healers (we're fighters, mages, heralds, although we do have one healer amongst us), and not all the OIB are Kal'enedral. And I think you'd better get an asbestos suit quickly, because I have a feeling that all the Heralds who are hunting Men in White as imposters may take exception to that remark! See, I'm 17, but I'm a freshman in college, so *everybody* I'm friends with is older than me. I have one friend at home who's a high school junior, and he's even two weeks older than me. I won't be 18 until June. Thanks for making me feel older! And I, too, enjoyed the Prydain chronicles and was *extremely* upset when the Disney movie of _The Black Cauldron_ came out--I was very young and expected that a movie might actually resemble the book! Ha. I guess one of the reasons it bothered me most is that the sacrifice made in order to destroy the Black Cauldron seemed completely worthless in the movie. It wasn't the last act of someone trying to redeem himself--it was Gurgi, whom everybody already liked (well, everybody I know liked Gurgi anyway--if you didn't, don't send me crashings and bashings!), and then he came back to life again. Even as a grade school kid, I recognized that that completely missed the point. I also enjoyed Lloyd Alexander's Vesper Holly books--not fantasy (though not horribly realistic)--but I *loved* Vesper! She was my hero for a long time, she and Eilonwy! I would have to say that the Harper Hall trilogy by Anne McCaffrey was the first fantasy novel I read when I was conscious that it was a fantasy novel. Before that, I read fantasy and SF *type* books wherever I could find them (Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Lloyd Alexander, Susan Cooper, Isaac Asimov), but I didn't know people actually had a whole section for them. It just thrilled my little 11-year-old soul beyond belief. My high school library was incredibly poorly stocked with SF and fantasy, and I now know why. There was at least one person in each class above mine for about five years who would "liberate" SF, fantasy, and philosophy books as fast as the library would buy them, and the library didn't buy them very fast to begin with. I think they die from the shock more often than suiciding, or maybe they will themselves to death. I've always held that the severing by death of a Companion-Herald bond was something like the severing by death of a Lifebond, and we saw Vanyel's reaction to that when Lendel died. I remember it being mentioned that when Savil was killed , her Companion (Kellan?)'s heart went from shock, or something like that. -+AT+->--- Stormcloud In the name One in Black of the Moon Jenna, the Misty maniac I'll punish you! jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 1996 17:40:10 GMT+0200 From: ROZANM-+AT+-webster.nl (Rozanna McNeer) To: aol.com!Raingcats-+AT+-enterprise.cistron.nl, Subject: S. As regards Jean Auel, I quite agree with you about plot-lines and style--I found that entire story-line tiresome in the extreme. I mean, Come on! A little basic communication would help! But I'm not sure what you're alluding to exactly about Talia. Her naivete? While I agree that > Auel, like any historical fiction writer is free to make up any society she > wants so long as it does not contradict the existing facts, I do think > that she makes some rather extensive stretches with little evidence. Absolutely. However, she does come up with some relatively plausible theories about religion, hierarchy, technology/economy and ideology. A little-known fact about anthropologists: no matter how pragmatic they appear, they're all closet dreamers. That's why her theories, however unrealistic, are appealing. > There is no evidence, one way or the other, that humanity was ever a > matriarchy. Spending most of your life either pregnant or > recovering from a pregnancy is not conducive to ruling anything. I am assuming you're talking about humanity as a whole, since you don't cite specific instances. That doesn't work (no, it's not a flame, just a comment). Many cultures in Africa--the Digo and Duruma in Kenya, for instance--are matriarchal and have been for centuries. There is some substantial evidence that pre-historic northern European cultures were matriarchal (women were buried with more care and greater treasures, Venus figurines abound, most images found are of women, etc, etc.) I can't explain why this is so, since your biological explanation would seem the most logical, but them's the facts. It certainly wasn't reliable, but it was used. *Warning for the squeamish or offended: graphic details commence:* the chinese used tortoise-shell condoms, the Egyptians used oil-soaked sponges and reeds, vinegar and herb combinations were used--some quite ingenious methods were employed. Sorry if I've offended anyone--that was not my intent at all. even > assuming that the rhythm method of contraception was derivable in those > times. Anyway, there Lordy, don't even start with the Catholic Church and contraception. WHEN will the pope wake up and see the real world?? I'm Catholic, by the way. As my mother put it to me once: Honey, if you think that Catholics don't use birth control, you are out of your mind. > are a whole host of other fuzzy lollipop ends that nature gave the > female sex that would mitigate against a culture/society in which women > ruled. All we have to do now is > get past countless centuries of human history and social construction of > gender and sex. I am trying not to pull a big feminist-rhetoric thing on you, but...biology isn't everything. Women were doing great things and creating major cultural changes before modern-technology "liberated them from the prison of their bodies" as it were. Again, this is not intended as a flame--this just happens to be a very sensitive topic with me. So many people persist in thinking that women were totally helpless before the advent of "modern enlightenment". Nefertiti? Cleopatra? Joan of Arc? Clara Barton? Margaret Mead? > Anyway, where was I going with this? I don't remember. Oh, yeah. The emphasis on the healing arts and the idea that magic is open to both sexes goes a long way toward creating equity. It's not perfect, though. I seem to recall Kero absolutely shocking Daren, and later the Rethwellan court, because she was female and didn't bother with their social conventions of being "seen and not heard." > Anyway, something I think would be cool is if Jean Auel and Misty teamed > up.
