I saw a couple of theories floated, so I figured mine might hold water too. I think that soulbonds, and I'm including the Companion-Herald bond in that category on the strength of Elspeth's observation (in WoFury HB p. 110 near the end of chapter 7) "It _is_ just like being Chosen," are very much different than lifebonds in their origin and nature, although very similar in some of their aspects. Soulbonds are imposed by an outside force -- magic or goddess or whatever -- while lifebonds are the product of genetics, personality, and opportunity. Beginning with the simpler sort of bond, the soulbond, we have three major examples: Need-Bearer, Companion-Herald, and the she'enedran bond between Kethry and Tarma. The first is unmistakeably a kind of symbiosis. Need provides her bearer with assistance, her bearer provides Need with a view of the world, and a way to accomplish her own ends. In the latter two cases, an early bond becomes deepened and enriched by friendship, etc., over time, but the bond which begins the relationship is imposed on at least one half of the bondmates. When the Goddess blessed Kethry and Tarma's blood oath, She transformed promise into bond. (For those who have not read "Sword Sworn" : Tarma had been prompted "by something outside herself" to suggest a blood oath to Kethry, each had made the crescent cuts in their palms and they joined them, as in a blood brothers/sisters ceremony, when their joined hands flashed incandescently, and when they took their hands apart, the cuts had healed with the silver scars.) Significantly, Tarma feels a filling of the void left by her slain clan, once she is sure that the Goddess has blessed the blood oath, and it isn't all that much longer before they start to be able to tell what the other one is feeling. (In Oathbound.) In the case of Companion-Herald bonds, again, we hear about something being filled, or, when the bond is broken, void -- emptied. Metaphorically, then, a soulbond is created when a "space" is formed inside and between two bondmates, and depending upon how much of "themselves" the bondmates pour into the space in it's early life, it sets firmly or lightly. (like Jello?) If it is broken abruptly, everything that was put into the space will be lost, leaving a void. But if it is undone, as Need seems to be able to do, the space itself is unmade, and each bondmate is left with whole. If it is broken deliberately, by one bondmate withdrawing all of their own contribution to the bond, as Gala did with Tylendel, then the space still exists, but the remaining bondmate has no way of filling it. (At least, not without a great deal of help from outside themselves. If someone had had the good sense to sedate 'Lendel, they might have been able to save him.) Is that even halfway logical? Okay! On to lifebonds. Lifebonds are the product of a different mechanism, and are more closely related to the kind of bonds which twins sometimes have. We are told that lifebonds can happen in a single meeting, and are like having another half to your personality. I'm going to resort to a metaphor I propounded a while back, because I haven't thought of a better one, and suggest that each person has the capacity to produce a kind of a "sticky rope" (think gossamer) and each person's ropes have an end of a unique shape. Using this metaphor, each time a person meets someone, the ropes quickly test each other for compatability. Think of the stickiness as passion and the shape as compatability. Twins, who share the same genetics, have perfect compatiblity of shapes, but the wrong chemistry for stickiness, which needs an epoxy blend to work most of the time. When strangers meet, sometimes the stickiness is right, but the shapes are wrong, (resulting in a roll in the hay) and sometimes the shapes are close, but the stickiness just ain't sticky (resulting in an especially close, but non-sexual friendship.) But very occasionally, two people meet who have a stickiness and shape that match fairly closely, and that is when a lifebond forms. With that kind of criteria, the more exact the match, the stronger the bond, and the precision of the match is apparant from the outset. Hence, Talia and Dirk have a very strong bond, where 'Lendel and Van had one which was less strong. The critical difference here being that in a soulbond, part of one's soul has been altered to make a fit, while in a lifebond, one's inner "shape" is the same, but there is an additional tie, that is primarily external until it has been acknowledged, and deepened. (Notice I didn't say strengthened.) And because it is external, it is more noticeable to outside eyes. But both types of bond eventually allow for a kind of non-verbal communication of emotion. As evidence of the difference in the nature of soulbonds and lifebonds, I submit the case of Tylendel. How was he able to hide the depth of his bond to his twin if it was occupying the same kind of "space" as his bond to his Companion? Wouldn't Gala have known? Yoicks! and Away! I agree with you guys - age shouldn't matter at all. Since I'm new, I don't know exactly what you guys have talked about already, so please, bear with me if I'm repeating something. I have always wondered - somewhere in the Last Herald Mage trilogy, there's a mage whose magic is very good, yet not quite good enough to meet the requirements of a really great adept. When asked why he wasn't an adept, he said something like, "Better a first class mage, than a second class adept." (I can't remember exactly - it's been a while since I read the book, but this line has always stayed with me). I've always wondered if this idea is right. I mean, supposing that someone's skills/gifts were limited, and that whatever abilities they had were as good as they could ever become, I think that the idea of staying a first class mage ( or whatever) is best. However, if one's skills were able to improve, I have always thought that it would be better to aim high. What do you guys think? The Ladies IN Green have _another_ Champion! We will never lack for protection again. Maybe soon, TLIG will have to become TLIG & Champions to be fair. : ) (Slghtly sorry I posted this to the list at large.) ObMisty: The rulers of Valdemar never needed Champions. Is it because they could fight themselves, nobody ever challenged them or the MO doubled as a Champion? Just wondering. There is something like that in Winds of Fate. Darkwind says that it is better to be a first-class scout than to be a second-class mage. He thinks that his magic is flawed. Maybe this is a pet subject of Misty. I went asked the Disney stores about the Black Cauldron (was it available, would it be re-released, was in it on video etc.) and the answer that I got was that it was, for the time-being, locked up in the moratorium (sp? word?) and that there were no plans for it to be released on video, nor re-released in the theatres. BUT! that was probably two years ago, so this info may be inaccurate. Hopefully, they'll change their minds. Oh yeah, thought I should mention that the Cartoon book (You know, those big, big, brightly coloured books with some of the drawings of the "movie" in it) is available although I have not found it in every bookstore. Ironically enough, it wasn't being sold in the two Disney stores that I checked out... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivian Choh "I'm all that I claim to be. Oh, you are so lucky. I used to live in Richland, WA, and my family spent almost every weekend up around Coeur d'Alene camping. I really miss that area. > Anyhow, you all seem like a nice group of people, and I'm really hoping that > this list isn't as... cliquish (sp?) Nope, we're not. On the other hand, if you don't join one of our "special groups" (these are definitely not clique, *definitely* not!) we shall all be most put out and think that you don't like us! Actually, not really. Hmmm. It just occured to me, do we have any unaffiliates on the channel? Shouldn't they be wearing blue and doing strange and mysterious things with gears and thingamabobs? (For those of you who are experiencing pre-finals stress, that was my ObMisty! *grin*) > Especially since I have the > tendency to ramble and have consequently told you everything about myself > that I can remember... Really? That is all you can remember? My goodness, surely you can remember more than that! What was the name of your 3rd grade Math teacher? Have you ever owned a dog? or were you "just good friends"? What's your favorite color? (this may be the most important fact, since it might have a bearing on your choice if you decide to join one of the groups on the channel.) There must be oodles of things that you can remember that you didn't say. I think that this shows an extraordinary and commendable sense of self-restraint. I have been known to ramble on with an absolute wealth of details, until my friends beg me to just *shut up* for a few seconds and please, don't even tell them why there is a 9ft bull-whip on my bedroom wall. *giggling madly* Anyway, welcome, May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences. Cherryh. Rat was originally Misty's creation, but was taken over by Leslie Fish. Now let's see if I can remeber the names of the books...I shougld be able to, I just finished reading all of them a few weeks ago. 1. Angel With A Sword (The first novel, written exclusively by Cherryh, introduces Altair Jones and Thomas Mondragon, as well as most of the other characters.) 2. "Festival Moon" 3. "Fever Season" 4. "Troubled Waters" 5. "Smuggler's Gold" 6. "Divine Right" 7. "Flood Tide" 8. "EndGame" (Which was good, and answered a lot of questions about various and sundry people, but still left you wondering in the end. I'm still hoping for another, but I haven't affixed any of my appendages to my nether regions. All in all, a pretty satisfiying series, IMNSHO. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lady 'Reesa<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Just one final thought.
