Your comment about the end of BTS, wherein Misty starts handing out Companions to all her characters like they were party-favors had me in stitches!!! I remember thinking the exact, same thing when I first read it!! Understandably, Kero was Chosen to keep her tied to Valdemar, or at least more strongly tied than her love for....drat! I can't remember his name(Edrel, Eldan, Eldern?)...anyhow, her being Chosen made sense. I would have to conceed that Daren's being Chosen made sense also, but I don't think it was really necessary, merely convienient. (As you can see, I can't spell either.) Your comment about the companions being walking death wishes intent on marching up and giving their name to every unattached, altruist person on Velgarth was also one of the most deliciously sardonic comments I have heard in ages!! As for TE (textual evidence) regarding acknowledgement of the lifebond on Tylendel's part, check out page 185 of Magic's Pawn. This is the point in the tale where 'Lendel is planning the attack to avenge his twin's murder, and explaining to Van why he would be able to "borrow" the mage energy necessary to power the gate. 'Lendel, at least, should have known what their 'link' was, but didn't seem to. This, I believe, goes to prove what Heather was saying about it being a plot device to further the "will they or won't they get together" tension in the reader. If I remember the narrative correctly, when Talia was being told how Ylsa and her lifebonded got together, the story was that they recognized their bond early on. But their relationship was firmly established by the time Talia entered the picture, and hence there was no need for the aforementioned tension. The fact was that that particular bond was a Tri-Bond (with apologies to the makers of the boardgame) with the third party involved being VERY agnst-ridden while the other two (Ylsa and Keren? I am horrible with names) were completely unaware of the third party's interest, which added to the plot by supplying a "replacement" for Keren when Ylsa died, would seem to further support the thoery of plot-device.. (I am NOT saying a bonded can be replaced! But that IS how it seemed in the book.) Ironic, isn't it, that Talia is the one to recognize what's going on, when she herself is involved in a similar bond but can't see it for herself? I believe a lifebond is much easier for those NOT involved to see than it is for the bondeds themselves. As with most things in life, it's easier to see clearly things that are going on between others than it is to veiw our own experiences unemotionally. Additionally, just as clairvoyants are generally regarded as being unable to see their own future, so it would seem that lifebonds, because they are arguably another form of psychic occurrance, are something you can't sense if you are involved. Which isn't to say it not just psychological, or even a combination of both! I am simply putting it forth for discussion. In regards to Recognition, I have had the honor of speaking to the Pinis at several conventions and authographings, and have heard from the, er...Elves' mouths themselves, that it IS very definitely about reproduction and genetic compatability. Further, while I didn't hear either of the Pinis' confirm it, neither did they deny the supposition that Recognition was also one way to "breed" the magic back into the Elves. As I remember hearing the theory proposed, this is supposed to occurr by combining the traits of the Elves who had wolf-blood in them to those remnants of the "pure-blooded" Elves with magic abilities. In short, the purpose of it was the resulting progeny, with their ability to better survive and "tap" the flows of the native Aether (magic). As the reader will recall, the "pure-bloods" inability to tap those flows is what made them vulnerable to the troll's attack when they first landed on the World ot Two Moons. The "proof" of this supposition was that the first mating of two isolated tribes---namely Leeta and Cutter---results in one of the most powerful, magically speaking, of the Elves since the landing. Again, this isn't something ratified by the Pini's, but as I said, they didn't deny it either. I am new to this listing/server, so please forgive me if I've repeated something futher up the thread. I am looking forward to future discussions here, now that I have joined. My feet may never leave the ground, but someday--I'll fly. I quote from the archives FAQ 5. Why won't she let us have a MUSH or write fanfic? Russell Galen is Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixson's agent. He has made the following statements in a general post to alt.books.m-lackey, dated in October 1994. Any use of works by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixson in fan fiction or a role playing game is strictly prohibited. The reasons are as follows: A. It is copyright infringement. Any unauthorized use of intellectual property, whether or not for profit, is copyright infringement. B. The authors are against it. Knowing that strangers are making use of one's world, one's characters, one's creations, is usually a very unpleasant feeling, one of violation and intrusion. C. There's been a great deal of discussion here as to whether a MUSH or MUD would help or hurt the salability of commercial game rights. The fact is, we don't know. It might have no effect, or a ruinous effect. There is ample evidence for both from other media, and I don't know the answer. Given that uncertainty, we have to err on the side of caution and protection. D. All of us on this side have discussed this and are resolved to take no chances with these valuable copyrights, and will vigorously pursue all legal means at our disposal. Also, any action we might take would not be limited to individuals but to the universities and other organizations that permit their equipment and lines to be used for this illegal purpose. E. Yes, we're greedy and narrow-minded in defense of our clients' ability to make a living. This is Mercedes Lackey's job. Anything that threatens her ability to make a living is no less an evil than any other situation in which an innocent party is forced, by the actions of strangers, to fight for her livelihood. So, please, folks - Just Say No to Lackey-MUDS. If you want to write Fanfic, please send mail to the Queen's Own or HighFlight addresses above, and request a release form. Don't go doing something that you're going to wind up regretting, later. Anyhow, no-one specific to reply to, but appropos the discussions about companions dying when their herald dies, cf dragons, I got to thinking what happens when a companion is killed - they seem to be vulnerable to arrows/swords/nasty-magical-things - but the herald survives? McCaffrey has emotionally wrecked souls who generally never really recover from the loss, but I've not come across it it any Valdemar books. If anyone has read Mary Herberts books (telepathic gee-gees attaching themselves to humans capable of magic - not brilliant books, but reasonable yarns) then they'll know that her humans get offered another hunnli (= telepathic hoss) which lurks in a helpful, lean-on-me, shoulder-to-cry-on sort of way until a new bond forms - bit like 'Fandes did to Van at the beginning of whatever-the-book-is - eerm, Magic's Something. I will also repeat what I wrote earlier last week (and which _everyone_ ignored - I was proud of it as an original bit of thought, and you ignored me you rats - I don't get original thoughts _that_ often. If I cared that much I'd go and sulk, but, sheesh, what the heck) .... where was I ...... ah, companions don't have to suicide when their herald dies - they're Guardian spirits after all, they'll simply vacate their physical form and follow their herald to the Havens for a spot of truth telling (like "well we're not allowed to tell you we're heralds, honest". If the situation demands that they hang around for a while (if, for example, Tantris (Kris's companion??????) had survived, and Rolan not, then presumably he would have been the one to get back as a warning, despite Kris' being dead - OK there wouldn't have been any arrows to hand over, but riderless, knackered companion would have given them pause for thought), but I suppose they'd then fade out when they could. I always fancied a McCaffrey story about a dragon who wouldn't impress, and had to search for their person as a growing dragon. She did it the other way with ol' fanny-adams who could hear them, but she was a bit of a wet blanket, so I lost patience with her. Esmeralda Evensbane (Unaffiliated Astrofizzizist) OK so how _do_ you spell unaffiliated then - 1 F or 2, 1 L or 2? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 09:49:58 -0400 From: adowd-+AT+-brynmawr.edu To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Oy Message-ID: On April 22, Lady Windsong said: >I'll add my 0.02 worth. That's what foreign affairs are all about. Isn't it the general rule that, when two countries go to war, one of the first things that they do is close their respective embassies? They don't want the embassy to be used as a hostage situation like occurred in Iran. Diana *********************************************************** Diana L. I would love to do it, but it's a violation of her copyrights (and, NO, we don't need to have the whole copyright discussion again, people) and I doubt many people would want to do that to her, considering it might make her stop writing. -+AT+->--- Stormcloud In the name One in Black of the Moon Jenna, the Misty maniac I'll punish you! jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 10:09:14 -0400 From: adowd-+AT+-brynmawr.edu To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Ma'ar's toys (was Re: Last Unicorn video) Message-ID: On April 21, David Tiffany said: >OB Misty: If all those weapons of Urtho made are buried under the >Dhorisha plains, are Marr's toys lurking at the bottom of lake Evendim? > >David Tiffany Oh, I hope not! Scary thought. Well, maybe they wouldn't work, having been submerged in water all those years. No -- they couldn't be! Wouldn't the Star-Eyed (or some other diety) have appointed guardians for them, like She did for the Plains? Or maybe She thought they didn't need one, being at the bottom of a lake and all. Anyway, did Ma'ar keep all his weapons in one place, like Urtho did? I don't think he would have had enough of a conscious to be afraid to use his weapons. --Aimee **************************************************************************** ***** *"Living is dancing and you are the dancer, * "Outside of a dog a book is man's* *within you the answer if only you'll dare." * best friend. I don't remember exactly, but I think it's in _Lark and Wren_ somewhere. And there was some kind of cataclysm in Alanda's past, and lots of technology was lost, execpt for the Deliambrans. So maybe she had this idea, but decided it didn't fit Velgarth, and so developed it further in Alanda. --Aimee **************************************************************************** ***** *"Living is dancing and you are the dancer, * "Outside of a dog a book is man's* *within you the answer if only you'll dare." * best friend.
