If I remember correctly the dragons don't have to sucide...they just do. In "Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern" she is riding someone elses queen and the two of them die. Moretas queen is with a clutch at the time. So moreta's queen and the other women wait until the clutch hatches and then the two suicide. My point is that the dragons don't have to....the love that they feel for the rider makes them want to not go on living. As for companions...as spirits they know that their riders are going to the other side where they will be happy. Therefore even though they are sad that the rider has left the earthly plain they know they are happy in the heavenly one and consequently...NO suicide. All right, my server's just recovered from some unknown ailment, so please excuse me if this has been talked about before, but... There is some precedence for the Lady Amber in L&W I probably should have brought this up earlier, but I just new remembered it. I'm not really sure if this is what Misty had in mind, though. And BEFORE Cennydd jumps all over me for textual evidence, a number of people in my 8th grade history class did paper on this, so I could probably give you some names. In Japan, there were women who served a societal (is that a word?) function and were highly respected, know, honored, etc. know as GEISHA! They were prostitutes in some respects, but they also went through rigorous training to also be dancers, chefs, whatever. They had to know how to serve and make tea, probably play a few "intellectual games," be with people of all kinds of classes, and do things other than turn tricks for cheap bucks. This, considering Amber's description of her House, sounds a lot like what those ladies were doing. However, I do NOT think the other whorehouse in R&K was this specialized. I think it was pretty much just a whorehouse, and I don't think it should have been portrayed quite that..hmmm, cheerfully? Just MHO. :) *****LADY JAGUAR***** Leader of the Cat People Lady in Green LGMCB Conspirator #13, DHTBB Lobe #3! "If you want someone to love you, open your heart. To answer this I have to bring back what Vanyel said in the third Winds Book, _Winds of Fury_, -- not an excact quote -- He stated something to the effect of the fact then while he was alive he did what he could do to protect Valdemar from the evil that would come in the absence of Heraldic Mages, by making the Web thing tied in with the Vrondi. But over the years it deteriated due to the amount of evil trying to get into the country, which is why it was going to fail and why Elspeth and Co. was pulled up the _Forest of Sorrows_ to talk to Him about it. He also stated in the third HM book, _Magic's Price_ (very sad I thought), to Stefen that -- Lareth had left behind him many sons and apprentices who had to be defended from entering Valdemar. So in answer to the query about Ma'ar/Lareth/Falconsbane -- He always wanted to dominate anybody that he could and he did so anyway he could in any form he could, no I do not think Vanyel died in vane... He is still alive whereas Ma'ar/etc is not (at least anymore thanks to Firesong.) SongWolf K'Valgar This is from the desk of: Eldon W. So you can never renounce what you have you can just control it to the point of not using it. They essentially die of broken hearts. I think the only answer to this question lies with the Mistress of this Realm herself. Has anyone bothered to ask Misty herself??? I think that since it is her world that we should find out what she thinks. I myself think along the lines of an earlier thought on here. That Companions as Etheral Beings are here just to guide us and be a Companion to us in hard times, and that when we finally leave this world for the next one, they have no reason to stay here so they also pass on to the next. As to the SoulBond being so close and intimate with the Chosen, it is stated well in Taila's case of her having so little MInsSpeech, how else would they be able to communicate if they bond was not so close. Lifebonds are the same, through Dirk, Taila was able to communicate with other people and Companions, even though she lacked sufficent MindSpeech on her own. It didn't _really_ take a long time. The first night they slept together, Van told Stef, if you'll remember. (Not direct quotes!) Stef says something like, "You were lifebonded to Lendel, don't you miss that?" and Van says "No, and your Gift is close enough to Empathy that you can See why." and Sends him a wave of love. It took Van a while to admit his _love_ for Stef, but he recognized the lifebond almost immediately afterwards. > > Keren and Sherri > > didn't know until after Talia did (okay, maybe Sherril knew, not sure on > > that one, but I don't think Keren did). > > Keren didn't know, but she and Ylsa did have there suspicions. Savil says something about "one bonded pair recognizing another" I think she's talking about knowing Van and Lendel were bonded. It's implied that people with certain Gifts (Empathy, Bardic, maybe the Mage-Gift) can See/Feel bonds. Since Mardic and Donni were both Herald-Mages, I guess maybe they could See their Lifebond. -+AT+->--- Stormcloud In the name One in Black of the Moon Jenna, the Misty maniac I'll punish you! jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 12:45:34 EST From: "Stormcloud" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Rolan, MOC, soulbonds, etc... Drop the mouse, push the chair away, stand up and RUN (do not walk, but RUN) to the nearest used book store to see if they have a copy (it's over ten years old, but still in print) Read it. Read it again. Keep reading it. It is one of the BEST books ever written (IMO) I've re-read it more than any other book. I LOVE that book. Given a choise between chocolate and that book is my definition of hell. I've enjoyed listening in and chatting with all of you, and hopefully I'll be back sometime in May after having reread some books and perked up my memory. On a parting note, I read The Dark is Rising (backwards order, mind you) in junior high and loved it. GGK is wonderful, too. That's all from me for now. Best wishes to all those who have to take (or grade) finals. amy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 13:33:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Rossinyol To: Rozanna McNeer Cc: vanyel.herald.co.uk!mercedes-lackey-+AT+-enterprise.cistron.nl Subject: Re: Talia on covers Message-ID: On Mon, 22 Apr 1996, Rozanna McNeer wrote: > Well, the Legend run of Arrows features a straight haired blond on > the cover, and we all *know* Talia has curly, brown hair. Oh, well, since I have never even heard of this printing edition, I crave pardon from those who were refering to it in their messages. I have only ever seen the original Jody Lee covers on the DAW? (Oh, I can't remember the publisher, isn't that strange?) editions (the paperbacks). I thought that Jody Lee captured Talia perfectly. However, I concede the point. If an artist made Talia a str8-haired blonde, then they were obviously not paying attention to the text. Sort of like all those Heidi books that have Heidi as a blonde. I always have to stifle a giggle at that. How do you go from short, very curly, black hair to long, braided, blond hair? (OK, OK, I realize that the answer is "A good hair-stylist or a wig," but that isn't what I was talking about. It's a fact that comprehension and retention increases with the speed of reading. What I think, though, is that to comprehend something is not the same as *feeling* it. And *feeling* what you read is, in my opinion, the main point of reading entertainment literature. -+*#*+- -+*#*+- -+*#*+- -+*# Roger Dahl - rd-+AT+-redleaf.bbs.no #*+- Now Hounds of Love are Hunting ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 14:11:26 -0400 (EDT) From: Rosario Holsen-Baker To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Leareth Message-ID: On Mon, 22 Apr 1996, Summerstorm wrote: > For that matter, I believe that Krebain was another of those > incarnations. You'd think he would have learned. Oh, well. > Mmmmmmm...no, I disagree. Though I did think that, at one point. During one of my Extended Misty Discussions (tm) with Sundancer, we hashed and rehashed this. The conclusion I came to was that Krebain was just another Talented psycho, sort of like Hadanelith with a mage-gift. Reasons? Leareth shows up too soon after Krebain to really *be* him. Let's look at what we know about the reincarnation process. He has to wait until the youngster has a magegift and does a certain spell for the first time (IIRC, and if so, it's a key point which I'll get to later), which means probably waiting up to about ten years after Krebain dies. All right. Then we have the whole thing about whether or not Ma'ar/Leareth/Mornelithe can remember from one life to the next. Either way, it has to take time to wipe out the old personality. One year, tops. Then Leareth has to build up an army. This, according to a conversation in MPrice, would take at least 15 to 20 years. Why? Because the conversation...actually, I dont think it was a conversation, but the information tidbit is that the father of the leader of the group that captures Van, Lord Rendan (or Lord Rendan's father, can't remember) served "Lord Dark," evidently Leareth, since it doesn't mention a break in command. That's...what, 36 years? If Van was around 15 or so (me-+AT+-school, books-+AT+-home, etc) when he went to Haven, he's around 50 when he confronts Leareth. Uh-uh. Also, if Van's right, and Leareth was responsible for 'Lendel's decline and eventual suicide, then he was around at the same time Krebain was, and that's probably not happening. My take on this was this: Krebain mentioned another employer, didn't he? Perhaps that employer was Leareth. It's possible, and it would also account for Krebain's changechild appearence in two ways: 1) he got the idea from Leareth doing it to someone or something else or 2) Krebain started out completely different and Leareth corrupted him, mentally or physically or both. Of course, this is slightly blown out of the water if Krebain really didn't mention another employer, but it's more to my way of thinking that Krebain=Leareth.
