In MPromise, he was 28 and Medren was 12. In the following book, Medren was about 19 or 20, so Vanyel *had* to be about 35, leaving 20 years since Krebain when Van & Leareth fought. If Krebain was Leareth, he would have been able to take over his next body even an instant after his death, depending on when the person tried to call fire. Whoever it was would already have been at least a teenage most likely, in order to want to call fire. Leareth would not have to go up from a child. If Leareth took over the body shortly after Krebain's demise, he could conceivably build an army and begin killing Herald-Mages in 20 years. I had been convinced that Ma'ar was Krebain was Leareth, but after a few points brought up in various letters, I am not too sure any more. Misty says power calls to power >so they wouldn't simply be left alone. Do they all migrate >out-kingdom or stay around and cause trouble? Do you think there are >groups of non-choosen gifted anywhere in Valdemar? My personal opinion--there are mind-magic gifted out there, but they are untrained and un-amplified by a Companion, so their mind magic tends to manifest as more the "hunch" kinds of things, like Maeven Weatherwitch, herbwomen, empathic people (not Empaths), etc. IIRC, the Collegium is "the only place where you can go to get training in the Gifts", and Kerowyn (I think) says somehting like "Valdemar has made a science out of mind-magic" implying to me that mind magic exists in other races/populations/etc., but simply isn't important because those Gifted with mind-magic aren't that strong or effective. As to the Mage Gifted--demonstrably there are MageGifted in Valdemar, and presumably have been ever since Vanyel, just no Herald Mages to recognize the talent and train it. My opinion again--if a MageGifted person was Chosen, the MageSight and other aspects were considered part of the MindMagic Gifts (ref. Elspeth's MageSight that she thought was just an aspect of FarSight). As to the UnChosen, they may end up as hedgewizards/weatherwitches, or , more probably, they go insane. ML seems to imply that those who are strongly MageGifted are emotionally unstable (especially as adolescents/young adults) -- Tylendel, Vanyel, Firesong, even Elspeth. I imagine an average Velgarth young person, not exceptionally good or bad, so not Herald material, who starts to see sparkles of light around living things and even rocks. Curiosity is a powerful motivator--do they "reach out" to touch the pretty sparkles? If so they might die from the power surge without being Grounded and Centered. Even if they don't die, the #$%?! vrondi are now swarming all over this kid....I'd probably go insane. I hope the Valdemaran MindHealers are able to deal with this. Perhaps the lucky ones are those that leave the country and find a MageSchool in Rethwellen or Seejay. I (I hope) never claimed that there was a culture out there that had no place for prostitution or some such. What I was trying to say was that there was precedence for a House such as Amber's in Lark&Wren. Now, the whorehouse in Robin&Kestrel where everyone was happy and no one got "social diseases" or raped or abused, now that is fairly unrealistic, and just downright silly considering she already had that in the preceeding book, in a much better form, IMHO. But there is a precedence for Amber's. And in a perfect world, there would be no rape, no prostitution (or chosen prostitution, maybe there are some people out there who would like to do it, in geisha or whatever form), no sexism, no bias, no bigotry. But only in a perfect world, unfortunatly. *****LADY JAGUAR***** Leader of the Cat People Lady in Green LGMCB Conspirator #13, DHTBB Lobe #3! "If you want someone to love you, open your heart. Space opera is a real, identified subgenre of science fiction, i.e. I didn't make it up. It derives from the old "horse operas," or, to the layman, cowboy and Indian movies. The theory being that it is essentially a horse opera set in space. Star Wars is one, gosh darn it. Obviously, the hordes of bad guys (Indians) are the faceless Imperial types, the cowboys are the Jedi knights, and the Alliance is the town full of good folk who need to be saved by the sherriff. Luke. You'll think of more similarities if you ponder. Obviously, there are neither cowboys nor Indians per se, but "space opera" is very descriptive, and don't be such a literalist. And I'm not wary of labeling it science fiction because it isn't cold and inhuman. I'm a big fan of Orson Scott Card, and he writes some of the more human books I've read, most of which are plainly science fiction. I'm wary because the plot of Star Wars depends on the idea that there is an ambient, mystical energy out there that certain trained people can utilize to see while blindfolded, float objects around, pick up and strangle an Admiral, etc. This is not terribly scientific, and doesn't pretend to be. This is magic. And when the plot hinges on magic, I have a yen to call it fantasy. HTH "We're not alcoholics. I think that this is probably fairly close to the chances with unprotected sex (don't know for sure, but I know a lot of people who seem to take forever to catch, even having unprotected sex.) First off, it isn't Spanish. It is Portuguese and is an evocation of the orixa of the forests in the Yoruba religion of Bahia. Or if Leareth was a practicing mage during Kebain's lifetime, but Ma'ar let him be because Ma'ar was already residing in the body of Krebain. Then, when Krebain dies, the next time Leareth calls fire for something-poof! no more Leareth only Ma'ar. Did any of that make sense? But, the Green Silences are a place in my private cosmology and fantasy world. They are the heart of a particular brand of magic which draws in equal measure upon forest magic and deep-sea magic. Also, they are a reference to "Desiderata": Go placidly among the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. Finally, the Green Silences are also a place in the real world. It is the forest around my ancestral home in the mountains of North Central PA. In many ways, and many times, I draw enormous amounts of spiritual power from the land and woods and the green silence that enfolds them. Heather please note that it was a computer glitch that had me off line for three weeks!. I would not do that willingly!!! And I certainly don't resent the time I spent catching up. I was just trying to figure out how to do it FASTER (primarily because I am actually supposed to be WORKING when I'm playing here) I'd just love to figure out a way to get all the posts in one giant scrolling file, so I could just sit in heaven and READ! Yes I too agree that life is short, but little things like paychecks are important base requirments for the time to do the things life is all about! >Mage of Green Silences wrote: >Don't *EVEN* get me started! Funny, it's an enduring fantasy of mine that I could actually get a guy to do what I wanted simply by shutting up and looking sad. In most of his stories, women actually have all the power, the men just think they're getting their way. BTW, outside of sexuality, his world view is very close to Misty's (and mine) one of the reasons they are both favorite authors. >> As I am not an academic >> (envious of Mage of Green Silences who does this for a living) >Umm. Oh well. =) Alternatively, you could be out here, writing your clients, clear, direct letters regarding the steps required to implement their enclosed retirement plans, only to learn that noone in the business world ever reads letters anymore. They just call up and say "What do I Do with this?" Letters are only to prove to the judge that you did the right thing at the right time. When Misty writes the story of how Talia finally passes on, I don't think I'm going to be able to read it. Too many tears in my eyes. By Elspeth's words, Talia will die before one of the twins takes the throne. AliFarr ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 501 *********************************
