I know some people who skim passages and manage to get the gist of the meaning, enough to do well in tests. Some people skip descriptive passages, especially of scenery, which can be very long but are notabsolutely vital to the understanding of the book. Others read a bit, then stare off into space thinking about what they have just read and connecting it with other events in the book. (I'm guilty of that although I normally manage to finish reading way before the teacher says stop & discuss, in class) Just my $0.02 worth Zhai'helleva, Lady Wintersong An Honourable Lady In Green Cecilia (ckwok-+AT+-rgs.edu.sg) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 04:42:01 CST From: Heather Watson To: Subject: Re: Talking Companions Message-ID: <24APR96.05076515.0017.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> Maybe in that one intense moment of bonding, you're so close to the mind of your Companion that you can't *help* but hear each other. They were forced into it by poverty, kidnapped and made to do it etc. Only very small numbers do so of their own free will and if so, that's their problem, right? Why should anybody bother about their choesen job? The people who should actually be looked down on is the men who go looking for cheap entertainment like that. I mean, they are the ones stooping down so low to visit brothels. No one forced them to go, the only ones who are forced are the prostitutes. Therefore, we should feell sorry for them and not look down on them. I haven't seen Priscilla or Philadelphia (seeing as how my grandmother has Philadelphia, I should), but if I were anyone in love with Antonio Banderas and I wasn't going to see him again this side of the Havens, damn straight I'd make out with him! Anything that wouldn't get either/both of us killed. Actually, for two men kissing on screen, I'd get _The Crying Game_. Even though one of the two guys isn't gay to start with....no more said for those who haven't seen the movie. But it's got a very nice plotline and some nice scenes with two men making out for those of you who also think it doesn't get enough screen time. BUT you have to remember the TIME PERIOD it was "remembered" in. The early, early 20s and 30s. That time period was not only sexist, women did not have the right to vote. It is more "historical biography" than anything else. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 08:48:12 -0500 From: Tammy Harris To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: The Birdcage (off-topic) Message-ID: <1D6BBBD51C2-+AT+-medicine.dmed.iupui.edu> On Wed, April 24, Heather wrote: > Okay, now that the public has decided there need not be mass rioting > in the streets if Hollywood makes a movie about gay men, the next step > is to make a movie about gay men where they actually get to *kiss.* I > hope I'm not being too radical, here. Actually, it was done quite a few years ago. Deathtrap, starring Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine. It's a mystery-type thing, IIRC. Anyway, you have this scene with CR and MC, both playing writers, and you think to yourself, "ya' know, this would be a perfect place for a kiss." And then, lo and behold! (I don't know about anyone else, but up till that point in the movie, I hadn't a clue that they were 'involved'. Granted, I was quite young at the time, so I had an excuse.) Anyway, I enjoyed it when I was in junior high school, but I can't be held accountable for it's actual quality. And that's my 1-1/2 cents! So that's why only Adepts get the bleaching effect. And that's why Companions are white -- it takes so much magic for them to have that extra speed and endurance. --Aimee **************************************************************************** ***** *"Living is dancing and you are the dancer, * "Outside of a dog a book is man's* *within you the answer if only you'll dare." * best friend. Magic seemed to be very country or people specific. When people from different countries got together, they were surprised what the others did. A lot of it seemed to be training more than talent. That particular spell may have been discovered in one place and not in others. Diana *********************************************************** Diana L. Well, the twins are still very young. By the time the queen dies, Talia may be ready to retire. I like that ending better. Diana *********************************************************** Diana L.
