Aaaaaackk!!! 2 hrs and 25 minutes?!?!?!?! NO FAIR!!! Lesee, I'm living in Canada, so for you in the states, a soph would be what, grade 10? WE never had so much free time! And I STILL don't! As Lady Bard Kadessa said, I WANNA TRANSFER!!! My school for grades 11-12 has a weird schedule. Most kids in advanced placement courses don't have ANY free blocks, but others have at least one. I only have one free block, and it is in the morning, so yes, I can sleep in a little, but I don't have lunch or recess, or coffee break, or whatever you wanna call it. I never see half my friends because we don't have common breaks. (I come late, and they leave early, and we have nothing the same inbetween.) Even if I did have the time, as I said earlier, my school doesn't allow students to use the internet. Students may be able to use computers in their computer classrooms, but only if there isn't any other class running at the time, and only if they are actually enrolled in a computer class. In the library, the librarians don't even allow students to use their computers without glaring at them first, and questioning them. When they ask you if you know how to use the computer, they're not actually asking so that they can help you if you're stuck - they're asking so that they can kick you out if you don't know what you're doing, and so you won't mess up their computers. They're not very nice. (Understatement) I only go into our school library when absolutely necessary. (They don't have a great selection on books, either. They're mostly old factual books, and the puny fantasy section doesn't grow. I don't think I've ever seen Misty in there.) When I got the first two Winds books in hardcover (the first Misty I read, BTW, saw them in an SFBC catalog and though they looked cool - reading those first is *NOT* reccommened, however), I didn't realize that one map was a close up of part of the other; I thought they were one map. I missed the start of this one...Black Cal in the Merovingen books is Dirty Harry, didn'cha know that? (Black Cal Halhoran...say his name fast! And Leslie often performs the "Guardian" song about Dirty Harry.) > By the way, when I was at Estrella War, I got a flyer > saying Leslie Fish had just released a new album with Joseph > Bethancourt. I ran into her (literally! Yikes! She's scary! But > fun...), as well as Joseph Bethancourt, and they both seemed > really excited about it. It's called "Serious Steel", and Random > Factors released it. Has anyone heard it? Tell me, tell me! YES! It's wonderful! I'm not in the SCA, but I know many SCAdians (although most of the ones in my social circle eventually got out of it, not liking the politics in the local kingdom...) The title song is pure Leslie: SCA meets Post WW3 Survivalist Fantasy. Then there's the trad-type songs Joe does more of, and "True Story" about government agents who don't get what the A in SCA stands for...and the wonderful "Valhalla" (next time you see somebody with a Norse persona you might look close...) and the last song, "Serious Steal" which is a great Bethancourt/Fish parody. John and Mary Creasey run the company; they are old friends of Leslie and now her filk agents too. They have another Leslie tape called "Our Fathers of Old" which is all Kipling songs.) Maybe we can start a support group... Sorry Rynath, I'm in Arizona, and if I'm not mistaken, Jag is in DC. I know! Stormy! Would you please give Rynath a hug for me? Just a friendly one, thanks much. (I love you dearly, but on top of being three thousand miles away you're 6 years older than me. You're OLD!) Anyway, so far we have three members of the DMF's (Depressed Misty Fan's. Any other takers? As long as we're on the subject, I'm also depressed 'cause Heather won't share her bridesmaids! Big meanie! Am I allowed to waylay (ouch, that hurt) the guests? I'll leave the wedding party alone if I can have a guest. If not, prepare to defend your ushers! Yes, I need sleep. I am coming down from a major caffine high, and now I'm way to perky and spaced out for anyone's good. I guess I'll let you all off the hook and disapear. I suspect a lot of this was the influence of Heinlein's wife, Virginia, a certifiable/INCREDIBLE genius with a double doctorate if I remember, fluent in seven or eight langauges, an athlete, engineer, horticulturist, biochemist...She must have shaped his views of women immensely; within their marriage he was known to defer to her, although apparently she was content to define herself in terms of her husband or simply be 'The woman behind the man" and not ask for credit (at least while her hubby was alive.) Notice how many RAH women have red hair? He based several heroines directly on his own wife! > > OBMisty: In case the above doesn't qualify. If so, how does this reflect on the current and > former government? > Well remember, Valdemar's law is live and let live, so they don't intervene directly in the lives or cultures of the various peoples...There probably isn't a "law" per se against child abuse; different groups in the Kingdom would have varying customs, but remember, anyone has the right to demand Herald's justice when they come riding circuit...Even after learning Talia's story, all they do about the Holderkin is give the Heralds access to the kids to make sure they know about Companion's Choice AND that anyone unhappy enough to accept being "disowned" / shunned by their own kin is free to come back to Haven with them. And it turns out the Hold Elders are actually kind of happy to be rid of real misfits. *Most* Holderfolk are content enough. I agree that by our standards and those inKingdom the Holderkin treat children terribly, but remember, even in *our* world the movement against corporal punishment and harsh parenting only started VERY recently. I had the distinct impression that it's socially accepted for a Holder to beat his wife or children even to DEATH and he would get away with it if he managed to convince the Elders they deserved it. Remember, Talia is scared to death of men when she gets to Haven. Well beating your wife or children was socially sanctioned right here, right into the 20th century and the courts would tend to take the man's side in a domestic abuse case (still do, some places! ) Kristin R. ________ "What if God was one of us, Just a slob like one of us, Just a stranger on the bus trying to make his way home?" - Joan Osborne _________ ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 519 *********************************
