Here I am, doing my very best to live in peaceful and content fulfillment while I haven't had a date in -- no, I won't even do the math, I don't want to know. And most of the time, I'm very happy -- I have great friends, a family I love, youth, good books, a fair amount of talent, and a mailing list. Now all your talk about how rotten it is to be single is getting me down. Bad! Bad bad! Look, if I promise bridesmaids all around, will you guys stop depressing me? I don't need this during finals week. ObMisty: Hmmm, no, nothing's coming to me. Except that Talia is very sweet and cuddly and she wouldn't let me be depressed if she were here. NOW see what you people are making me do? I don't own Serious Steel, but last time I heard Leslie Fish sing, she was plugging the tape, which was not released yet. The songs I heard were pretty cool. "True Story" was stuck in my head for days. Really, you can't go much wrong with Leslie Fish, IMO. HTH "We're not alcoholics. There's this radio station I listen to in the car, that is mostly music, with hardly any "and that was the stunning new tune from XYZ, and now .... " - which generally is great, but when they DO play something I really like, I can never find out what it is. And, (may my english teacher forgive me, sentences starting with And,..) they play this a lot, sung by a woman, and I _love_ it. I like the "with no-one calling on the 'phone, 'cept for maybe the pope in Rome" (my memory for lyrics is dire - the above is what I singalonga, it may well not be what the song sings! I should also point out that the above radio station is a local, dutch station. Now think of the articulacy of your average english speaking DJ, then think of that in Dutch. Thinking hard? I can handle your everyday conversation, but radio DJs and commercials have me beat. 'Kay kay, I know, no ObMisty - gimme a chance - I've just finished the first trawl thro' the weekends post - there's 180 mails in my wastebasket, and I'm about to start back over the ones that tagged my attention. This list is getting busy again - my Lackey folder in my mailer is up to 1300, and I think I re-set the counter about a week ago (I hasten to add that there are not 1300 mails there - it just keeps on adding 1 until it reaches - well, I've no idea - I shall leave it and see (it'll probably crash!) ciao, Esmeralda ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 96 10:35:51 +0200 From: dbackhau-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: re: companions dying Message-ID: <9604290835.AA11400-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl> this is following on from last weeks (?) discussion about what companions do when their chosen dies. Oh and totally off the subject, last week the reasons for Van having, or not having white hairs were being bandied around. Well, seeing as how I happen to have Magic's Promise right here, it says: "There's more silver in your hair, too," Tantras observed, head to one side. Someone mentioned this the other week - there's no real mention of food, other than basic ale, cheese, bread, stew. Love the stuff, as my gently expanding hip line shows - I've sort of managed to kick the chocolate habit, but wine? Potatoes? Cheese? Tiramisu? No chance! That's what was nice about McCaffreys early books - now there's a lady who likes her kitchen! Incidentally someone was asking if ML was going to write about Valdemar's early days - well, let her take warning from the McCaffrey prequels - not good, and certainly taking advantage of her fans who tend to buy on the strength of the author. Of Eddings....umm...maybe Barak. Or any of the hack-and-bashers, they tend to be the same. Of Jordan......Mat Cauthon, probably. But I just can't see either Lan or Hettar going "me (wo)man, you (wo)man, we poke." 'Specially with both of their attitudes towards falling in love, i.e. bad, bad, don't do it. Of course, they DO, but that's beside the point. *****LADY JAGUAR***** Leader of the Cat People Lady in Green LGMCB Conspirator #13, DHTBB Lobe #3! "If you want someone to love you, open your heart. The biggest problem is that so many are required. When you have that quantity of people in any profession, you are going to run the gambit of genius to rote. Most of the teachers I know now are very consciencence (sp?) and do the best they can. Why would any intelligent, > talented person teach when they could use their brains and talents to > make a nice life for themselves in a lucrative, comfortable job? Those nice lucrative jobs are getting downsized (or haven't you heard?). You can't get into a good job and just ride any more. The reason that people believe that old saying the > "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach," is because there is so much > truth to it. Teaching is a difficult and demanding job. Some teachers skate through it, but most don't. My sons' teachers are concerned about every student. I've met with most of them to discuss better ways of getting through to them. Sometimes those that "do" are rotten teachers. Those that teach rather than do probably know more about the theory and can get across the correct way of doing something better than someone who just does it and doesn't really know why it works. These were the kids didn't fit into a regular classroom (either too bright or at preschool level). The teacher was fantastic with them, but I saw them reduce a substitute to tears. I can teach college or one-on-one but I can't control and inspire a group of pre-college kids. Diana *********************************************************** Diana L. I don't think you have a genetic tendency to become an alcoholic - I think you have a genetic tendency to become an addict. Alcohol and cigarettes are just easier to get. I never could understand buying cigarettes. They just go up in smoke and I'd rather buy a book. (I tend to be cheap). Diana *********************************************************** Diana L.
