I want to agree with the folks who have commented on how nice the people on the list are -- it's been a really great place to lurk lately. Let's see, first following up on Cennydd's mention of the Nancy Clue parodies. If you like those, there are similar, and hilarious, parodies of the nurse detective stories for girls, like Cherry Ames. If you grew up on these, like I did, you have to check them out! Second, I'd like to sign up for the DMF (depressed/dateless/desperate misty fans) group! There's nothing like moving to a town of 8,000, all married people with kids, to kill your social life. If you're still in school, enjoy it! The only benefit is that I'm very close to the Ben & Jerry's factory, and have a scoop shop right on my corner, so I have easy access to Reverse Chocolate Chunk & Coffee Toffee Crunch -- at seconds prices, no less! If anyone wants to come up for the tour . . . did you know that B&J employees get three free pints a day? (And a health club membership.) ObMisty (1): An old friend of mine from high school (and fellow Misty fan) came to visit me this weekend, and we started talking about some of the newer books. My friend has had little time to read them since she became a chem grad student (aka indentured servant, I sometimes think). I mentioned that I couldn't find my LHM books (aargh!) and she confessed that I loaned them to her -- and she gave them to her sister -- and she thinks they're home on her parents' bookshelves! Well, at least she was honest about it. :) (2): Kristin, IIRC, brought up the Holderkin's treatment of children and women. It is an interesting question of how far the "no one true way" philosophy goes. We have similar problems in this country, with groups like the Montana Freemen and with more benign people like the Amish. Can people stockpile arms, opt out of mandatory education laws, not pay taxes, beat their wives, if most of us think these things are illegal? What if the Holderkin kept slaves? That would probably go too far. So, I think, would beating a wife to death. Good topic. The Last-Herald Mage series was the first Misty Valdemar series I ever read--and it's one of the few books that actually left me very emotional. Required reading for all Misty Fans. The older books are better because Misty has filk for them. What is filk? Filk is sci fi / fantasy-based folk music. "Shadow Stalker," the filk collection for the Last Herald Mage trilogy, is awesome. I still say that Misty should do filk for her new books--that's why they are less charming. Light Jedi (that's both singular & plural) -can- defeat Dark Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi did, in his younger days. Yoda did also. Luke -did- defeat Vader, though he chose not to kill him. The whole point about the Dark side was not that it was more powerful, but that its power was more easily obtained. It was seductive - the quick route to power. The Light side requires training and discipline and ethics - and that's never easy. But as for being less powerful, I'd not necessarily agree. The only possible reason for the emperor falling to his death in RoTJ was that he was so consumed with hatred and anger that he lacked the capacity to focus his powers enough to levitate. I happen to read very fast, if the book is engrossing, other wise i quit reading it and find something else, i also concentrate very hard on what i am reading, taking it in on all levels, including symbolically , emotionaly and intellectually, i concentrate so completely that i live, breathe, walk, talk and immerse myself in the book for the time i am reading, sometimes i absorb so much of the book that i find myself talking in dialect or with old fashioned phrases after reading a period book or one that has dialect, the most notable example is after i read "Emergence" by David Palmer, which is written in first person as a journal, which is supposed to be transcribed from shorthand, with a lot of the excess verbiage sheared. The first time i read it, i found myself absentmindedly leaving out "the" and other excess verbiage in the same style as the book. i do not watch tv or much of anything else when i read a really good book as i have stepped through the magic door into the printed page and i will not hear people speaking to me or be aware of time passing for hours at a time, in this fashion reading speed has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence, as far as i am concerned, it has to do with each individual and the style with which they read more than anything, i would like to point out that i also think practice has something to do with it. many of us hear have been reading voraciously from a very young age, most of the people of my acquaintance who read slowly and by that i mean stumbling over words and not comprehending their meanings, not that you read a trifle slower than my 150 pages an hour, have not had much practice Lady Susanna green pathways open before thee and wind ever at thy back ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 1996 03:10:08 -0400 From: Susan5683-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: SELF-GRATIFYING EGO TRIP Message-ID: <960501031007_387500623-+AT+-emout16.mail.aol.com> Uh, Ladies, Champions, Mages, Cat People and all other subscribers i humbly apologise, i have committed a horrible faux pas, by not introducing myself and just plunging in to follow suit with Kerry and Heather allow me to correct that blunder I am one of the incredibly aged at 32, i live in Va, between Williamsburg and the Beach, i work for a catalog clearing house and am also working on both a romance novel and a fantasy novel (no they arent the same book) I have been reading since i could hold the book up straight, i read cereal boxes, magazine ads and bill boards if nothing else is handy, i am married to a navy man who is currently stationed halfway around the world from me (sob) i have a little boy aged 8, and no pets, but i am looking into getting a german shepherd i am interested in metaphysical studies, collect tarot cards and crystals, am pretty good at numerology and astrology, and am currently studying the Edgar Cayce readings I am hopeless opinionated, stubborn and cannot keep my mouth shut without application of duct tape. You'd think they'd have better things to talk about -- like the books or series or whatever. Please try to remember that not everyone who reads/watches this stuff is part of "fandom." My father is the classic example. He's been an avid Star Trek fan for Star Trek's entire life. He's very, very well read in the Science Fiction genre, especially the hard stuff. But he's never been to a con, nor on a mailing list like this one, nor anything of that type. He's aware of the Trekker/Trekkie argument, but he refers to himself by both terms. I seriously doubt he's ever been exposed to this SF/Sci-fi argument. You just cannot judge his knowledge of or feelings about the genre by what he calls it. You'd have to talk to him about the actual books. My feeling is that you really need to talk to people and find out what their experience is before you go blithely pigeonholing them by talking about bug-eyed monster movies or the elite class of Star Trek fans. In general, it's a good rule. If you want to know someone's impressions of something, don't just guess based on a couple of phrases. Talk to them. HTH "We're not alcoholics. Enjoy 'em. Mel Mercedes Lackey Mailing List FAQ -------------------------------- ============================================================================== Part 1 of this FAQ, which deals with administration of the mailing list, will be posted approximately monthly to the mailing list. All parts are available by the following methods: mail: send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk, with a blank Subject: line, and message body: get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.1 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.2 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.3 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.4 get mercedes-lackey lackey_faq.5 This will send the FAQ to you, in 5 separate messages. FTP: ftp://ftp.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/ HTTP: http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/lackey_faq.html ============================================================================== CONTENTS: Part 1 About the Mailing List Part 2 Merchandise, Ordering and Miscellanea Part 3 Lackey Bibliography Part 4 Frequently Discussed Topics on the Mailing List Part 5 Other Lackey-related Groups ============================================================================== Part 1. The Mailing List ------------------------ Version 2.0, May 24th 1995 Compiled by Melanie Dymond Harper New in version 2.0: Rewritten to reflect change of site. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.2: information about other ML-related groups (AOL, Genie & USENET); explicit address for feedback. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 1996 08:14:00 EST From: "Diana L.
