Fair winds and skies, --Gyrfalcon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 1996 14:52:19 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey Subject: Teaching Message-ID: <9605011352.AA08171-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> It's been interesting, catching up on digests, to see the discussion which has been taking place on teachers and teaching. Once upon a time, I thought I wanted to be a teacher. In hindsight, that would have been a profoundly stupid move. I don't have the patience to deal with kids well, and I have never been particularly good at holding the attention of a group of the little sods^H^H^H^Hdarlings. Like at least one of the other people who commented, I can deal with teaching at college level (although I still wouldn't say I was any good at it), or on a one-to-one basis, but the thought of standing in a classroom and trying to interest a group of rowdy teenagers in algebra makes my skin crawl. I should add that I did have some very good teachers -- one Physics teacher, in particular, who had a bookcase full of science-related books and encouraged us all to borrow them. I thought it a great shame when many of them left my school not long after I did, because it was losing its sixth-form classes. [Digression: for those of you who don't know, schooling in the UK is compulsory until 16, encouraged until 18 -- and you'll have to stay the extra years if you want to go to college. In those two years, the college-bound typically specialise in three or four subjects, plus some general courses; I'm told that the level is about equivalent to first-year college classes in the US. Having that group split off into a specialist unit therefore deprives the teachers of some of the teaching that they probably enjoy most -- fairly high level, and with students who do actually care about the subject.] To attempt to bring this back onto some sort of Misty-related point, I think whoever it was who pointed out that Talia was very badly served by the Collegium did have a point. One problem would be that I see no evidence for any sort of 'teacher training' in Velgarth; being good with the trainees won't necessarily mean that you'll be a good teacher. However, who are they going to spare to train the folks who will teach the trainees? This seems to be a common problem with Valdemar, they're always so damn short of people. One last comment, then I will shut up on the subject forever: if prostitution were ever to change into what we were saying, then it would no longer be prostitution as we know it, would it? I think we would have to come up with a new word for it, one with different connotations. -Aimee ******************************************************************************** "Living is dancing and you are the dancer, * "Outside of a dog a book is man's within you the answer if only you'll dare."* best friend. (The Lambda Awards are les/bi/gay book awards, given every year in a multitude of categories, including speculative fiction). Yes, in fact LHM was not only nominated, but won. I think there are two reasons SWarning was probably nominated. 1) It is still not a large field, and there are only so many books to choose from. 2) Being shaych is not an "issue" in these books. The relationship between Firesong and An'desha is presented like any other relationship, and the fact that they're both men is hardly important enough to coment on. They have their problems, but none of them are related to gender. There's a time and a place for books like LHM, that examine some of the complexities of being gay. But, gosh golly, it's also fun to live for a while in a world where nobody cares one way or the other. It's refreshing to get involved with a fictional couple and not have to think "This is the GAY couple" all the way through -- couples like Firesong and An'desha, or Alec and Richard (shameless Swordspoint plug shameless Swordspoint plug shameless Swordspoint plug) Oh, and all you Massachussetts beasts, there's a gay & lesbian convention in Boston this July, called Gaylaxacon, and the guests of honor are two of the coolest writers alive (IMO) -- Ellen Kushner (who wrote Swordspoint) and Delia Sherman (who wrote a very neat book called The Porcelain Dove whose main character is a maid in love with her mistress.) I really wish I could go, but it's not easy to get halfway around the country on a college student's bank account. Nevertheless, I would reccomend it -- and if anyone can find, anywhere at all, a copy of Delia Sherman's out-of-print book *Through A Brazen Mirror,* I'd be eternally grateful. I went to one other school for a chess tournament...Misty, Roberson, and tons of others! Arrgh. I won't even go into the fact that they had like four pentiums, as well. >Okay. Location break, everyone. Tammy, where's that survey? Tammy's out in Indiana >somewhere, 'Reesa's out in Arizona, some people are over in europe.. Well, I'm in Arizona, too. Tucson. Surprising that there's actually more than one person who's *heard* of Misty in this state. As for books in school, we've had fairly good stuff this year - MArk Twain, who my L.A. teacher *loves*, but in sixth-grade we read these godawful, wretched ones... Then again, maybe they weren't that bad, but they were *not* what I like, and reading them for school made them worse (the teacher didn't help). I just faked the book reports for second semester. Maybe we'll get some better stuff at High School. >obmisty: i wonder if Velgarth has any subtropical or equatorial areas The Haighlei (sp?) lands are supposed to be intensely hot, presumably because they're so far south. Hee hee...I did! I think I got in trouble for it at one summber camp too. ObMisty: The collegium library should count as a school library. We know Velgarth has novels; does the collegium, or are they all dull history-type books? Agincourt and > Crecy, for example, were won by a handful of British longbowman who > absolutely slaughtered thousands of French knights in shining armor. I have to disagree with (or at least am confused by ) your example here. To shoot a longbow properly requires extensive training and constant practice. The French knights died of arrogant stupidity in charging a force that was smaller but was much better armed (not to mention that at Agincourt it was across an open, muddy field) thinking that, "hey they are only peasants we can mop the floor with them." (or something like that) Knights in full armor were extremly vulnerable. The only thing they were really good at was the massed charge and even then if they got carried away and outran their support they were toast. Longbowmen, on the other hand dominated until they were replaced by muskets. > There was a general known as the Swamp Fox in the American Revolutionary > War who used his knowledge of the mucky, icky South Carolina terrain > against the British, who were new in town. History is full of stories Yes, Brigadier General Francis Marion's forces engaged the British army using guerrilla tactics (altho they weren't know as that until the peninsular campaign in the Napoleanic wars 30 years later) along with similar groups lead by, IIRC, Pickens and Sumter, however it was the regular army under the command of General Greene that kept the main British forces engaged and kept them from concentrating on the guerillas. The amazing thing about that campaign is that when Greene took command of the American forces they had just been devastated and the British controlled Georgia and the Carolinas, except for a few patches of swamp. Within 18 months General Greene, by coordinating his regular and irregular forces, had driven the British back into the forts of Charlestown and Savannah where they stayed until the end of the war. However, Greene's forces lost every major battle! The only time he could have won, at Eutah Springs, he withdrew because he felt that he would lose so many men winning that his army wouldn't be viable any more! Sorry, got carried away there but it'a sort of a pet peeve that Gen. Marion gets so much credit and a major American hero like Nathanial Greene is ignored (Thanks A Bunch, Walt Disney Co! ... and now you expect us to trust you with the American Civil War?) OBMisty: If the longbow is used on Velgrath we have yet to hear of it. We did have ones I hated though. Anybody out there ever read 'All's Quiet on the Western Front'? I don't recommend it, not because it isn't well-written, but because the main character tells the story detachedly, with no real emotion. I realize that this is 'realistic' for a WWI veteran, but I hated that book. To top it all off, I was forced to read it twice because I switched high schools!
