Talia certainly wasn't, nor Dirk, and even Kris tried his damndest to avoid most of the, ah, entanglements that are available to you when you're bleedin' gorgeous. (Or so they tell me.) Vanyel certainly wasn't licentious, and I don't recall Elspeth being so. Had that Heir reputation and all. I don't think Darkwind was her first, but she wasn't really a playgirl. Kerowyn was obviously monogamous after becoming a Herald, but even before that, she was usually busy with other things. In fact, the only Herald I can think of who had a real reputation is Tylendel. And maybe Skif; I'd have to go back and check up on that to be sure. Misty seems to see it as some kind of devotion to higher ideals to have a rotten sex life. Even the characters who do have a lot of sex are either held up as definite items of curiosity (the lady who lived next door to Talia) or come to regret it later in life (Stef). Pity, that. I'd never do something so rotten to my characters. They have enough problems; they at least deserve to have all the sex they want. It's your opinion that Lazarus and the twins having sex was inappropriate. By the mores of their culture, which were based on genetics and _not_ on Judeo-Christian ethics, there was absolutely nothing inappropriate in it. It had the full-fledged approval of the head geneticist, who also happened to know the parties involved intimately (she was one of the host mothers to the twins and family head wife). Let me point out, this is _speculative fiction_. An exercise in "what ifs". Just try for a moment to forget your culture and imagine a society where sexual mores were determined differently than they are in our culture. Let me also point out that writing about something doesn't imply, by any stretch of the imagination, encouraging the fictional act in RL. Of course you're going to find things you'll disagree with if you read it as such. Do you think murder mystery writers are encouraging murder? > > Thirdly as I recall, the women in question were not in a caregiver > > relationship - they were quite self-sufficient. > > Ummm. The women were the "child" in the relationship. At least in the > case of the LL and the twins. But they were past the age of consent and had been for some time. They were also very intelligent women who had been encouraged to think for themselves and make their own decisions. Which they did. Lazarus was raised in a culture similar to ours and was determined not to sleep with them. They countered all his arguments and threw in a few of their own. In _their_ culture there was nothing wrong with having sex with someone you love as long as the geneticist ok'ed it. They had a hard time understanding his reluctance. Did Lazarus take advantage of his position as their nominal father? I can't see it. > Actually, this caused a thought to surface for me. The whole long > scenario with Maureen and Lazarus was filled with references to the fact > that she was his mother. At least to me, re-reading it (and the first > time), it seemed like the whole point was to show the characters > revelling in a taboo and revelling in the fact that what they were doing > was taboo. A major part of the attraction for Lazarus (and later for > Maureen) seemed to be the idea that he was her son. So the whole incest > thing was central to the relationship. The taboo that Maureen revelled in (not Lazarus, just Maureen) was in being: 1) Interested and willing to enjoy sex in the first place, in a culture where sex was for women something they had to 'put up with' for the privilege of having children. 2) Non-monogamous. I've read both Maureen's account and Lazarus' account several times and I've never seen any reference to either one of them being attracted to the other because of their familial relationship. I remember Lazarus berating himself for being stupid enough to fall in love with his mother when his purpose their was just to meet his first family again, but certainly not feeling more attracted to her because of it. He was attracted to her because of her, not because she was his mother. And Maureen didn't even know he was her son until way after it was too late. She knew he was descended from her but assumed he was her many-times-great-grandson. > Also, when he had bi's, it always seemed to be a perpetuation > of the whole myth that the reason someone is bi is because it doubles > their chances to get laid. This isn't just homophobia, but also a covert > biphobia. You're right. His characters, with few exceptions, were all comfortabley bi, and I challenge you to show proof that they were all just out to 'get laid' more often. You're getting awfully judgemental toward an author who lived in a society where people were very, very seldom openly homosexual. Despite the fact that he kept an open mind toward different sexual ideas and challenged others to do the same through his writing. I think this argument is getting a bit out of hand. Why do you feel you can judge the man's feelings toward sexuality at all? I'm sorry but I can't even reply to anymore of this tripe. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 May 1996 22:35:06 -0500 (CDT) From: Tammy Bender To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: re: Heinlein Message-ID: On Sat, 4 May 1996, Farrin wrote: > Wow! ::Reels from rush of tornado generated by Cennydd's blast:: > > Um, could we agree to disagree and leave it at that? I've always tried to be open-minded to others' ideas and lifestyles, but I still felt that my way was the best way. Heinlein challenged me to consider where my values came from and to start deciding for myself, without the 'benefit' of the values of my society coming into play. Not only has my own lifestyle changed as a result, but my beliefs have as well. It wsas rather like an arranged marriage. Uhhmmm, I hate to dis-illusion anyone, but this is a mid-evil(I know, it's splled wrong, but that's how I remember it, I blame phonetics as a child) society. The nobles along with other families quite often use arranged marriages. Withen and Lady Treesa were an arranged marriage. Most you will find will be. About the only people who are free to love as they will in that world are Heralds, Healers and Bards. Having less than no strings attached to them other than their work. Remember, even Elspeth had to keep herself free for marriage in case she needed to wed for state reasons. That'show that whole business with Ancar started.... Thanx in advance! Handfatsing is an ancient custom, normally associated with the ancient Celts (pronounced KELTS) that was for a time period of a year and a day to acertain wether or not the couple were fertile together. It can also be interpretted as a different marriage ceremony than what the christians use. Typically the ceremony includes binding the couple's wrists and hands together using a cord to sybolize them becoming one, hence it being called handfasting. In the more ceremonial ones the couple will keep the handfasting cord tied on the entire day. Normally the female keeps the cord safe....That's all I know about it. BTW, If I ever beome hitched it'll bein full summer under a full moon outside in a handfasting ceremony. But then for me I think the ideal woman would like an emerald for an engaement ring too....I'm hooked on green, the deeper the better. Blades ps. No I am not a chritian that's why I know a bit about the ceremony, plus i saw one performed last august at an SCA event. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 00:44:53 -0400 From: Susan5683-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Bloopers list? I said that about Van becoming Guardian of more than one area and that is why the web spell was created. I messed up (hanging head in shame) See, I live in Va and most of my books are temporarily residing in CT including (whimper) most of my Misty books. Up until now i have been bravely resisting the urge to buy new copies as I already have them (though not with me) and there are so many new books i want that i dont already have (so many books, so little time and doremi) however i now see i am going to have to break down and invest because i keep goofing up. could somebody help me with this--i have a vague recollection of Van having an internal discussion with himself about creating the Web spell because there weren't going to be enough Mages to do the Guardian thing( so many had died already) and i also thought that he was Guardian of more than one direction for a while--does anybody have these books to explain this Apologies again Lady Susanna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 00:46:47 -0400 From: Susan5683-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Too much mail?
