Now that it's been established that Valadamarans have superstitions, we just have to figure out what they are. :) For some reason, I'm thinking there was some mention in one of the books of it being bad luck to start a journey if there was like an owl or something that hooted. The difference between him and an *herb-, fire-, or knife-healer* (again emphasis added) was that, like all trondi'irn, his training was tailored to the needs and physiology of gryphons and other nonhumans." The Silver Gryphon, Chap. 1, pg. 10, DAW Books This means that there were Healers that operated without having the gift, i.e. herb-, fire-, & knife-healers, at least during and after the magewars, and there is no reason that this practice should have been forgotten or put aside. :) (snip city) >-Aimee Lady Bard Kadessa/Windphoenix k'Vaia -----President of VEVUWEC (sig partly under construction) E-mail: -Kadessa-+AT+-ix.netcom.com -Windfoenix-+AT+-aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 May 1996 08:49:09 +0000 From: "Vrondi" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Dragons|Andre'|Van/Bardic| Message-ID: <199605122348.TAA07338-+AT+-edweb.concord.wvnet.edu> On 12 May 96 Mat Timmerman wrote: > Well, there was that thing that Eric fought in the Hollywood Hills (you > know, when he leaves Ria). Oh, the quote is Keth, OB, p118 After vorcelhawk nuber two showed up and overflew them, leading away from the Plains, Keth says, "Do me a favor, hmm?" she said in a voice that shook a trifle. You wouldn't > ever be able to leave the noisy room if you were a telepath. Besides, > wouldn't voices sounding in your head be more insistant and immediate, and > less easily ignored than voices you hear with your ears? Well, first of all, why would you be stuck listening to peoples thoughts all the time? Are thoughts louder than words? My thought is that if you got tired of listening to the white noise of peoples thoughts, you could just go off somewhere by yourself for a while. I mean, that is what you have to do to get away from real sounds, right? This is sort of the argument that Anne McCaffrey uses in her Talents series to explain why the Talents live in such comparative luxury: they require the extra space to escape from the "noise" of the minds around them. She also uses the example of white noise very effectively to show why Talents were suffering during the building of a space station (this is in _Pegasus in Flight_). However, she also posits that shielding of the purely physical variety would be effective against the Talents. As to the second point, why would telepathy be any more insistent than real noises? I just can't imagine that the thoughts of others would be any more compelling or "louder" than the actual voices and convos that they are having in the coffee-house I mentioned in my previous post. Also, if it were true that there was something more intense and direct about telepathic communication, surely one of the characters in Misty's books would have complained about the lack of that intensity when he/she was "merely" talking? I mean, in most other books with telepaths, that is usually a characteristic of the telepathic characters: they feel that telepathy is somehow more intimate and meaningful than speech and they feel very cut off without it (textevd: Savage Empire Series' Readers, Betazoids in Star Trek, "The Wall at the Edge of the World", the powers in "How the Gods Wove in Kyrannon," the Talents in Anne McCaffrey's worlds, etc.) Anyway, I just don't think that the kind of telepathy that Misty has built into her books is as intense and intrusive as that. Kero was bothered, but wasn't overwhelmed by it. Warrl taught her to shield more for his sake than for hers, at least in the short term. anyway, those are my $.02 May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences. This is just my opinion, but I always thought that the problem with not using her powers is that it just built up, forming a larger and larger beacon for the nasties that specialized in devouring Di. As long as she used her powers regularly while carefully shielded, Di would be able to walk the dagger's edge between too much built up power and too much focused released power. This latter part was the thing that kept her from using her powers freely: when she did, it meant that she was releasing focused, pure energy, which would surely be noticed and hunted by hungry Di-devourers. They both originate from Latin, as far as I can see. Well, I haven't read SRising yet, so no TxtEvd, but maybe Misty didn't want to use the word "innate" too often, hence congenital. Oh, oh, I saved this from being a 1-liner, I'm pleased with myself. Bis denne Khenta B. aka Skyfire "Sometimes magic sounds like adhesive tape." Now, we see that Heralds deliver the letters from and to other Heralds, and the nobles probably have their own messengers. But what I was asking for in my original post (sorry if I didn't phrase it clearly) was how the rest of the Valdemarans (non-Nobles, commoners, common folk) get their mail done. If they ever do write, that is. I don't think that Heralds act as a regular postal service. After all, it takes most of them one and a half year to get back to Haven. Who would want to wait that long for a response? OTOH, they can be trusted (gr?) that it reaches its destination. And maybe they wouldn't miss the chance to earn the money (Heralds are well-paid, aren't they?). Bis denne Khenta B. aka Skyfire "Sometimes magic sounds like adhesive tape." Now that got me wondering: Doesn't he just *have* to sleep during the day? IIRC he falls asleep when the sun rises and wakes when the sun is setting. That's his nature. He can't do otherwise. So how can he be watching movies or be in the library when "naturally" he can't even stay awake? I don't think he spends the nights in the library. He's certainly got better things to do. When I received a copy of it from the list, it was half-garbled and unintelligible ... or was it that way when I sent it... I was drunk after all :-) Next ... just a few truths of myself... after reading these, you decide whether the aesir are toying with me in this life-time. 1.) I'm nearly blind in one eye but have perfect vision in my left. That's Wodin's gift to me I supposes ... that and my easy way with crows and ravens. (Yes I have a pet crow ... I climbed a very sap ridden pine tree to fetch her from her nest when I was only 12. Her mother had been slain by a hawk.) 2.) I've survived being struck by lightning. I will safely assume that that entitles me to claim Thor as either someone who hates me or loves me enough to keep me alive after having the most powerful force in nature shooting through my body. 3.) I suffer (am blessed) with the "Red Rage." That is why I seem so hard to anger. I can't afford to get angry. Well add those all together... are the Aesir toying with me? I think the only thing that keeps me sane is the fact that my favorite Ettin has taken me under his wing. (takes a shot of single-malt scotch) There's another one for you, flame-bringer! Fair winds and skies, --Gyrfalcon =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 1996 07:45:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine Osborne To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: AP's Message-ID: On Sat, 11 May 1996, Leah M Postrech wrote: Thanks, I need all the luck I can get. :) When I finished the test > today, I had this odd desire to burst out singing the Halleluia Chorus. > :) I don't think I did very well, but it's finally over and now we > have no homework in the class for the rest of the school year (which > ends June 26. :P) How did Lisa do?
