I'd have figured that it had to do with the personality or mmm... individuality of Di's shop. I imagined Di's shop to be one of those small cozy shops (you know, where the proprietor actually does the work selling the goods, compared to the bigger, conglomerate-type shops, where owners own chains of stores, and have to hire lotsa people to run them). Bars might be more impersonal since they are probably busier places and hence there is little (or at least a lot less) personal contact. After all, I can imagine walking into such a shop and the owner asking me my likes and dislikes, and where the conversation might cover a whole range of topics, such as which of Misty's books I liked better (outside Valdemar, or inside it) or why Heinlein may or may not have been overboard in his portrayal of the "freedom to love whomever one wants" , whereas in a bar (esp. if busy), i don't imagine that the waiter or waitress will want to know any more beyond which beer I like.. No text evd, but I was thinking that maybe Di had put some sort of protection on her shop (that misty didn't tell us about). If her shop was selling arcane objects, maybe she would've set protections in her shop so that "evil" things wouldn't be able to get at them while she's not minding the shop. Of course, i haven't read the books in a long while, so I don't recall if any "evil" things ever made their way into her shop while she was not there... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivian Choh "I'm all that I claim to be. Well, I can't say I was terrible impressed. For one there were strong over(under?)tones of Kero and Elspeth (post bratty-lets-be-a-cow-to-Skif phase) in Di - still, I can hardly fault ML for liking to write about capable, forthright women, but I was disappointed to find no vampire - I thought the Di Tregarde books had a vampire in them??? Me not recalling correctly or what? I thought Burning Water was the first, hence buying it first - are the others better? I found I was beginning to skip the victim set-ups - all that "slipping of shadows next to them" got a bit samey. You knew that when a new individual with apparently no connection with the plot was introduced, this was victim number X. I also found that while I am prepared to believe anything if it's written around a fantasy world, I found it hard to suspend belief when the magic is apparently happening in my world. Can you imagine what the world media would be making of such numbers of death? I found the police attitudes a tad low-key, considering what was happening. I've just read some sample chapters from the Tor Web site, a fantasy novel that I will look out for, that had some outrageous "magicky" bits in it, but I didn't need to believe or rationalise - it wasn't "real", I could just enjoy. Burning Waters' world was too "real" for me to be able to enjoy. So, is that it, or should I try the next? We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. I am not saying that men are incapable of improving the connection with an application of determined effort. However, unless they apply the effort, they do not ever know what they missed.... As far as infighting, Ms. Lackey (Yes, Ms. is appropriate for a married female) often wrote of dissension and factions within the Heald Collegium, starting with Magic's Pawn, where I believe Savil mentions that half the Herald Collegium blamed Vanyel for Tylendel's death. Remember, Heralds are nothing more than ordinary people with mind gifts. They still have the same prejudices, desires, etc. They are much more altruistic and have a need to do something good with their gifts (which is a major factor in being Chosen), but still ordinary mortals none the less. And in the Arrows Trilogy, Talia helps mind heal a Herald that is badly burned, and blames herself for the death of her partner because of her desire for "pretty things" I believe. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 May 1996 12:11:23 -0400 (EDT) From: The Stress Test Champion To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: fwd: Free at last!!! And the chance to be a wife and put all my mother's years of training to good use is very tempting. But I have decided to hold out in hopes that, sometime in my lifetime, same-sex marriages will be legally recognized and I will be able to marry my boyfriend. In the meantime, of course, I am already committed to my fellow "wise elder of the tribe" and textevd fan, Heather, so you will have to ask her, if you want to join the Virtual Festivities. BTW, I think that in honor of various groups that will be attending, the wedding colors should be tones of green and gold. Black, of course, is always acceptable for the people who are attending, but the wedding party should go for Primeval Forest Green and Old Peruvian Gold. At least, that is my thought, though I am willing to negotiate with Heather, if she has a more distinct preference. =) ObMisty: I think we may have covered this before, but do they have same-sex marriages in Velgarth? I think that Moondance and Starsong(?) were the equivalent of married, but what about in the more cohesive nations like Valdemar, Jkatha, Rethwellen, etc? Of course, if the treatment >works, it would spare the healers to take care of more traumatic injuries. Perhaps you've heard the phrase, "an Ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure"? This is how you innoculate someone against a disease to build up immunity. So they're not treating the disease, they're giving the body antibodies with which to fight the disease if they come in contact with it. When you were given the Polio vaccine as a child all it is is a weakened form of polio injected into your body, which then in turn makes antibodies in the blood to kill the weakened virus. the antibodies stay in your blood stream, so you will never catch Polio. See how it works? If you remembe correctly, in Arrow's Fall it mentions that dirk's mother is a healer who attended the Healer collegium in Haven, but returned to practice in her home area. she met a travelling Bard, they got married...hence Dirk...Also, in Arrow's Flight Talia rode to a healer's temple to fetch healers via Companion back to help the Snow Fever victims.
