Message-ID: Heyla! This is going to be real short, 'cos I'll have to start studying for Astro finals tomorrow (uh...note the words START and TOMORROW ;-} )... but anyway I just skimmed through Arrow's Flight again and noticed the description of the storyteller at the Heralds' revelry near the beginning of the book - does anyone else think that that's Eldan? Apologies if this has been discussed before (I kinda remember there had been some mention of this on the newsgroup when I could still access it, but I didn't pay much attention to it then...) Oh, and second question: Has Kris's and Dirk's ages ever been disclosed? How much older than Talia are they, for example? And what of Skif? In the Arrows Trilogy, I keep thinking of Skif as being older than Talia, but in the Winds Trilogy, I can't think of him as being much older than Elspeth (heh sometimes he even acts *younger*!) but Elspeth is about 7 years younger than Talia, IIRC... Can anybody help me out here? (Hmmm...this ain't short afterall...) Wind to thy wings...all... Wildfire P.S. Anyone else here ever had 5 all-nighters in 10 days before? Gods! Let me explain to you ignorant non-Americans ;) the wonderful world of the College Board. These people live in Princeton, New Jersey, and spend all their time thinking up new sorts of standardized tests so they can drag money out of every college-bound junior and senior in the country. Hence the SAT's, the standard exam (scored on a scale from 200 to 1600, multiple-choice in reading and math. The idea is to measure your general "preparedness" for college work, not what specifically you know). The SAT's are taken more or less seriously depending on where you are applying. I was lucky and did quite well, a 1530. Then there are the PSAT/NMSQT, which is half practice for the SAT and half qualifying test for National Merit Scholarships. Scored like the SAT and pretty much identical in content. In addition most good colleges will require at least 3 Achievement Tests, or SAT II's. These measure, mult-choice again, a student's ability in areas including English Literature, Math (several levels), all science disciplines, and various foreign languages. scored on a 200-800 point scale. All of these things cost about twenty-thirty dollars each. If you want, you can also pay them for review books, test prep courses, etc. Then there are the AP's. AP's stand for Advanced Placement Exams. They cost $72 each (!) and are scored on a 1-5 point scale. You may either take a specific course to prepare you for them (hence the name "AP European History course" or whatever) or just take them if you feel ready, like me, since there are no AP Humanities courses at my school. They consist of varying amounts of multiple-choice and essay responses, and take 3 hours. If you do well enough, many colleges will accept them for course credit, so if you do enough of them you can graduate in three years, or skip introductory courses, or whatever. There. Was that complicated enough? ;) Catherine Osborne (Sundancer) I cosborne-+AT+-sidwell.edu -------------------------------------------------------------- Why would a fellow want a girl like her,I A girl who's merely love-ly? Then you take a certain number of courses in that department, or relevant courses in other departments, and then you can graduate from college with a degree in English, history, or whatever. A minor essentially means a formal concentration of courses in another department, only fewer of them. It gets noted on your transcripts. So, I want to be a history teacher. I might major in history with a minor in education if I wanted to teach public school. If I decide private, though, I major in history and take a minor in anything that interests me (probably classics, English, or French, or theater.) We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 May 1996 09:07:13 -0500 From: Balli Sird To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: re:Differences Message-ID: <14071314847454-+AT+-misslink.net> At 07:12 AM 5/16/96 +0100, The Stress Test Champion wrote: >Actually, yes, I have seen the program, I have read the reports, etc. I >have also read the criticisms of the gross overgeneralization and >unsubstantiated claims that were made based on the finding of the >original studies. > They may be unsubstanstiated to the *scientific* community, which is and has been predominatly men btw, but to an observer of life, I am more inclined to credit the "claims", from day to day observations. As stated later in your remarks, there IS a diference in brain activity. To me, this indicated different processing, thus a bona fide conclusion of a bona fide difference in HOW men and women think. >These would be the above mentioned claims. Has anyone stopped to consider that in our day of *politically correct* language that such an attempt to cover over the results and conclusions would happen? The program I cited pointed out that already an attrempt had been made to bury the -results- because of the air of the *politically correct* crowd. I rather enjoy the idea that men really have a physical reason for thinking so radically differently than women. Otherwise the difference would drive me crazy, thinking that they were capable of understanding but -failing- to do so out of willfulness, meaness, or just plain indifference. >May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, > >Cennydd, > >Mage of the Green Silences. > >Eu guardo a luz das estrelas >a alma de cada folha >Sem folhas nao tem vida, >Sem folhas nao tem nada, >Salve as folhas! > >Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife >Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously >Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb >kenny-+AT+-strauss.udel.edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me > > Valthrea aka the Bird Woman May you always fly as high as the eagle bird4ever-+AT+-misslink.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 May 1996 09:07:19 -0500 From: Balli Sird To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Braiding a Tapestry of Threads Message-ID: <14071965847457-+AT+-misslink.net> At 07:30 AM 5/16/96 +0100, you wrote: >1) I'd always believed that Talia had sent letters BACK with Skif.
