Mmmm, interesting idea, but remember, even with magic, the companions would bleach back to their natural colours very quickly. I imagine the effect would be even more pronounced with Adepts. Now Hulda & Falconsbane -could- have been fixing themselves up each time, but I don't think so. Firstly, neither of them were -that- prolifigate with power - once off things like changing your appearance are one thing. On-going maintenance that chews up a lot of power is another. Also there are times when they are low on power, or way too busy to worry about things like that for weeks or more, while still using nodes and there's no evidence that they started bleaching.. Still, I guess it's a debatable point. Personally I still prefer the triggered idea, like a gene. Like the Adept-potential gene and the Node-sensing gene that I postulated a while ago. Both are required to actually use nodes. Ancar had the node-sensing gene, but not the Adept-potential one. All of the Tayledras have the node-sensing one, courtesy of the Goddess' gifts. (Actually the original theory was a bit more sophisticated, but that was about the pith of it). Maybe he didn't plan everything but only engineered the snowstorm when Talia's Gift went rogue. I think that Maeven stocking the waystation was just coincidence. _____________________________________________________________________________ Lady Tammy said: >>Well, seeing as how eye color is genetic, and thus encoded in the >>DNA, once a soul has left behind a particular body, the eye color is >>gone as well. I've seen a ring that isn't like the Claddagh ones, mostly at jewelry carts on the streets in downtown Boston. Its three separate bands. At first glance it looks like two hands shaking (you know, a handclasp), but when you pull apart the two hands, there is a heart underneath. I like it because of the "hidden" heart aspect. I've only seen it in silver. If anyone is interested in this style, I can hunt one down and check out the price - probably around $10 to $15. And thank you to everyone who helped me understand the Dianora thing (from Tigana/GGK) - sorry I didn't continue the dialogue but my personal life is screwed up right now and I haven't had time to concentrate on lotsa other stuff. To those of you yearning for long-term relationships ... be careful what you wish for. I'm trying to deal with what to do with what very well may be the end of my over 10 year relationship with a perfectly wonderful person ... we seem to have fallen out of love with one another. It sucks. Don't ever assume that one person can be the end-all and be-all of all of your wants, needs, desires - and be prepared to sacrifice things you feel strongly about. Its just the way relationships work. Oops ... sorry! I'll stop now. Anybody who likes this kind of realism should read the Chronicles of the Cheysuli, by Jennifer Roberson. She has a major penchant for killing, maiming, corrupting, or whatever, the major characters. And since each of the eight books ('cept the first two/three) deal with different main characters, anything can happen to the current ones as long as the story progresses towards the fulfillment of the Prophecy. Oh, BTW, if any Robert Jordan fans haven't heard (?!), you can download a copy of the prologue of _A Crown of Swords_ at the Tor SF Books page at You really should read it; it has at least one MAJOR event. (He's dead!) Wow, now I've mentioned two of my fave authors in one post to the discussion list for the third. Cool. :) ObMisty: erk...there's no Jennifer Roberson in Velgarth? No, wait, even better - there are no shapechanging races in Velgarth. Although shapechanging is certainly possible. :) Shapechanging also doesn't play a major role. There, that ought to do it.
