I've always thought that after they freed Windrider, he went off after Darklord, and they were forgotten. They just sort of collapsed and he rode off. Then, maybe no one knows what happened to them for a while. That could explain them falling "unseen into shadow". They could have been gone by the time Windrider got back. > Maybe it is at that moment > that two more Companions arrive, Choosing Sun & Shadow and carrying them back > off to Haven. I have a feeling that a Companion bond wouldn't break the curses. It's too easy. It also makes the situation less tragic. If they get them broken so easily... I don't know it's too pat. I got the impression from JH and CotN that the Guardian thing is partly extra power at all times, partly super power boost in emergencies. Aside from the power boost, it would let her know things she didn't before. If whoever makes Guardians what they are thinks that Di can't handle the situation, they activate the Guardian reserve powers. Di has no choice in the matter, if it comes, it comes. Did anyone else notice that Misty didn't really have the Guardian concept in BW? The closest thing to it is that she has to answer a request for help. There's no mention of being a Guardian. Yet in CotN, we sort of get bludgeoned with it (can't vouch for JH, been a looong time since I read it). Since she's married to Larry Dixon, I assume she isn't gay, but she writes about same sex attraction so intimately and accurately it makes me wonder if she hasn't had experiances of that sort. The same is true of her spirtuality in regaurd to the Diana Tregard novels. Anyone who's read up on neo-paganism based on the ancient Celtic religion of witches can see that's what Diana's charactor and her magick is modeled after. Once again, when you read her stories, it seems like she's writing of these things from first hand knowledge! Is there anyone out there who shares these curiosities? Misty's characters are living (well, you know what I mean) examples of that annoying-but-true proverb "The Lord helps those who help themselves." Or, as the Goddess Kal'enal said to the hunter who'd lost his luck, "You're not dead yet." 2) In A Cast of Corbies, the main characters are Raven, Crow, and MAGPIE, not Nightengale, Nightengale is a supporting character. On an off-topic note, I read in Sandman (surely the greatest comic of all times, gods smile on Neil Gaiman) that it's a murder of crows, a tiding of magpies, an unkindness of ravens, and a parliament of rooks, who all live in one tree, "many hundreds of birds to a tree, and a rookery is an obsolete name for a ghetto of thieves and whores." (Sandman graphic novel Fables and Reflections, in the story titled A Parliament of Rooks, which has the story of Adam's three wives, the only place besides The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe that I've seen THAT story.) 4) I hate to bust your bubble, Lady Moonsong, but A Cast of Corbies was co-authored with Josepha Sherman. OH, and as Goddess of Nomenclature, I name people gods to be on my revised pantheon of modern gods. 5) I HATED HATED HATED that seen at the end of By the Sword, all that soul-bonding/ choosing was enough to give a person diabetes, talk about direct intervention of the gods, where were Misty's vaunted "leave them alone and they'll do fine" values then? I'm sorry, I'm not into cute, and deus ex machina drives me up the etc. wall, it's laziness for people who just wrote themselves into a corner. 6) As far as Misty being a witch, there's a paperback with a VERY old picture of her, not at all flattering with a necklace that looks as though it belongs on Diana Tregarde when she's doing a ritual. No other evd, though. Actually, the pendant that she is wearing always reminded me of the crescent moon pendant of Angharad, daughter of Regat, Princess of Llyr and mother of Eilonwy in the Prydain cycle by Lloyd Alexander. The one that was capable of "easing burdens." As far as Misty being a witch, I had heard that she was not, but that could be just protective coloration. Remember that she is living in the buckle of the Bible Belt and the good folk of Tulsa Co. do not generally approve of witchcraft. The only people in Tulsa that I knew of who openly admitted to being witches were teen-agers who demonstrably did not really know anything about witchcraft except what they had read in popular books. I didn't know any adults who were willing to admit to being a practitioner. Also, about the idea that Misty might be bisexual, I suppose that is a possibility, but I always assumed that she was a str8 ally. I have noticed that most (I would estimate over 90%) of the fantasy novels with positive lgb characters are written by women. I don't think that this is an indication of the sexuality of the writers. Rather, I would say that this is the result of the str8 woman-gay man bond and the political implication of lesbianism with feminist writers. ***Notice*** BTW, I am going to be compiling a bibliography of fant- and sci-fiction novels and short stories with lgb characters in them. I would appreciate any help. If you know of a novel or short story with (an) lgb character(s), please let me know. In addition to bibliographic info (Author, year, title, publisher), it would be helpful if you included a list of the lgb characters and their role in the story (hero(ine) or villain; main character, supporting, or minor; etc.) I will announce here when I finish the biblio and will email copies to whoever wants one. Even if you're not doing research on gays and bisexuals in modern literature, it's still a book I'd recommend! Mercedes(Misty): Well, like every fantasy writer I have a pretty good sized library of such things. << Let me jump in here. Just because she can write about witchcraft well does not mean she is a witch by that alone. Sure, she could be, but she doesn't have to be. As a fantasy writer myself, I have scores of books dealing with all sorts of fantasy-related topics, from criminals and their methods to magic and belief systems around the world. I, personally, am a witch... but I can write about other religions (quite well, in fact--someone once asked me to tutor their child in Roman Catholic theology) without being a member of it. I've heard of this phenomenon with professional, full-time writers (not mere freelancers like myself) where they've been asked questions about topics they brought up in their books, and it turned out, yes, they had an intensive knowledge of the topic, but no, they didn't do it in real life. >> And I use an odd little Bonewits book I bet most people haven't seen. It was written for Role Playing Gamers and is called AUTHENTIC THAUMATURGY, and is a practical distallation of REAL MAGIC that works both for RPG and writers. << >> James Birdsall: I'm curious about Diana's magic. It seems to change a bit in each book e.g. in _Jinx High_ lots of stuff about lawful prey and karmic balances which... I didn't see in the other books. Are your ideas about her magic still evolving...or is it that each situation calls for a different aspect of her magic... or am I imagining things? Mercedes(Misty): James, you are not imagining things. What we have is a combination of 2 things the fact that Di gets more practiced and her atittudes change over time, and... that she uses different aspects for different jobs. << Just a couple of quotes related to this topic. This was from a conference held a couple of years ago (two I think). I have the full text on my machine, if anyone would like it. Put yourself in their place, you have never heard of Misty, ot anything like that, and suddenly start recieveing *lots* of messages about things which you have no idea that even exist. I know I would be annoyed at the very least. He probably doesn't know that the list is automatic and there's nothing we could do to stop it. It was probably someone's idea of a joke to subscribe him. Unless you've been here for a while, and read a lot of Misty, most of the things on the list would make absoultely no sense at all. Point is, put yourself in this guys place, and think how you would react. He probably just got on the net, and is clueless, and thinks people were doing that to bother him. I already sent him a polite note telling him how to unsubscribe, and saying that we're not responsible for anything, that it was probably one of his friends ides of a joke. It isn't exactly good manners to flame people who are ignorant, and don't have a clue what's going on. Come on, be nice. It is incredibly hard to catch up! If it's at all possible, stay current, but it is possible to catch up, I do it all the time. The list is important, but there are more important things, make sure you get your priorities straight. I've spent all day just trying to catch up, my last chance before finals I think. I am going nuts, but of course that's not news. Only a couple more weeks until summer, then I'll finally be able to catch up on evrything. And just another note, many people have recently sent in the misty bios for the homepage, I'm not ignoring you, they'll be up in two weeks or so, then I'll fix everything and update.
