Very lonely, too. It was only the fact Van had given him a job to do and promised that *eventually* he could come up to the Forest of Sorrows and join his love that kept him going. He may have had the "companionship" of friends or maybe an occasional lover, but it was probably 50 or 60 very sad and lonely years for him. Remember, Vanyel himself lived fifteen or so years with a broken lifebond, and before he was bonded to Stefen was sure he'd never love that deeply again. In MPromise he was still brooding and grieving every Sovvan-night and it has been 12 years. Only being Chosen and his Heraldic duty kept Van alive - and it took awhile to convince him that WAS a reason to live! I've decided to delurk a little bit...keeping up with the list can be hard and my mail program sorts newest-to-oldest by default, so I tend to be reading the threads backwards! I'm 31 and I've been reading Misty for almost ten years - since AotQ was *first* published. I was into filk before that and knew her by filk reputation since her songs were on tapes that far back (tapes not now in print, but FIrebird has the ones that are in print.) I just finished re-reading the Arrows Trilogy, all three books. Brought back memories...I really identifed with Talia in AFlight when I first read it because I was going through my own crises of trying to mature and believe in myself. AFall i (first) read in almost one sitting because I took one look in at the cover and felt, "Oh nooo! Misty's going to kill her off! Aagh!" I was angjished when I thought Talia might die! Just bought the Heralds Harpers and Havoc album on CD too, although I haven't listened to it...:) I joined Queens Own early on, but I've since let my membership lapse....I did have a Herald persona, "Herald Marithe" (wrote a story, drew a picture, etc) but didn't carry it further and now I think I'll have to check through my computer files to remember my wn persona! AACK the system is about to hang up on me again!! back later Kristin Ruhle ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jun 1996 22:54:43 -0700 (PDT) From: "Kristin A. Ruhle" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: More Message-ID: <199606020554.AA15744-+AT+-waltz.rahul.net> Besides Misty my favorite authors are Cherryh, McCaffrey, a lot of hard-SF stuff (lessee, I was reading Moving Mars by Greg Bear) and things like Jan Brunvand's urban-legend books and Cecil Adams' The Straight Dope. (See the alt.folklore.urban FAQ if you don't know what those are.) I have met Judith Louvis and yes, she is a wonderful person. She turned me on to Deva Lifewear, a clothing company on the East Coast (well actually their warehouse is in South Dakota now, but they still operate in Maryland as far as I know) that has nice things made at home by a "cottage industry" of stitchers who are paid very good wages and sew their name into the garment (well it's on the care label.) Wonderful textured fabrics that you don't have to iron because they're SUPPOSED to look crinkled. Judith says their "Buccanneer" shirt in white is a good under-top for the Whites you're putting together. I am very sad to hear that about Misty and the stalking fan. People out here think she's just paranoid and that it has to do with a 'filk feud' some years back (which I will NOT discuss on the list - send me private email and I'll tell you about the misquoted post and the time Misty threatened to sue me), but sounds to me like this didn't involve filkers since the filk dispute was among West coast people and the tstalking has to do with the East coast. So this one time please forgive me for not sniping, just this once. I subscribed to this list about a week ago(I don't go in for long lurking periods, especially with other Lackey fans). Before I start spouting my opinions, I thought I'd say, by way of introduction, that I'm Glith(aka Angela in the more mundane world). I'm delighted to find ya'll and have enjoyed the glib discussions going on around me. Now, I think I'm ready to join in. I don't usually cry--don't like to do it but Misty seems able to do it to me better than most. I cried many places in TLHM series and of course when Kris dies and at the end of B Gryphon(the tribute to Urtho just killed me). Very few other authors do this to me. The Fionavar Tapestry by GG Kay, Moreta and Nirilka's Story both by Anne McCaffrey, and Tolkien's LOTR in several places. Movies can do it to me as well: when Spock died in Wrath of Kahn, at the end of Braveheart(I still can't figure why), and of course several Disney movies(Bambi, Lion King to name just two). Strangely enough Misty's given me some of my worst crying and some of the best laughter as well.(Like Tannim's impromptu concert for the Unseleigh) I found Misty entirely on my own at the library. I was on one of my search and discover missions. I was tired of the same old authors and wanted to try something new. I started with the Vanyel books and only discovered Arrows later on. Lots of folks have been expounding Misty's withdrawal from her fans. I don't want to speculate(could be any number of reasons) on that but the topic brought up an interesting side-subject. The declining quality of Misty's writing has been a concern of mine ever since Mage Winds. Unfortunately, I think that some of the blame lies with her fans. Be honest. We're all a little guilty of wanting more, more, more. I know I am. But I suspect that most of the pressure on Misty to produce is coming from her publishers. To us she's a good writer. To them she's a gold mine. What they don't realize is that Misty won loyal fans because her stuff was well written and well thought out. The lady needs a sabbatical!! At the rate she's putting out, she can't possibly have time to properly plot her books. Writing is an art all its own. You can't rush a scupltor and expect masterpiece quality. The same is true of writing. So until Misty decides to put her foot down about just how much she can produce at one time, we're stuck with the poorer efforts she's pushing herself to. (And maybe her efforts to do too much is the reason why she's withdrawn from her fans. She just doesn't have the time). Of course, I could be wrong. Could be she's doing it to herself. There's been a lot of speculation about who's gonna die in Mage Storm. I realized that no one has mentioned that one significant death has already occured. Of course this may support the theory that someone major will die in the third book. She did the same thing in the Vanyel books. But if its gonna be anybody, it'll be Andesha. Why? Firesong is too miserable. If you'll notice its only the people who are satisfied with their lives that tend to be snuffed out in the Velgarth books. Now having said that, I think that Misty's stuff is less well written lately. And 'get' was the wrong word, implying that you received an idea as you would a gift. You didn't get ideas. I figured I'd send it to you since it contains info. about one of the major reasons Misty and Larry have decided not to go to cons anymore. This seemed to be one of the hotter topics when you left so I thought you might like the info. hope you don't mind me sending this one message on your personal line! (If you do mind, let me know and I'll never do it again.) WTTW, Airelle Lady Thess wrote: >I made a Herald persona a long time ago--at least 8 years ago, maybe more. Still. ) Okay, about the certificates. I met Judith today (very nice woman, by the way) and asked her what the situation was on the certificates. She said that I should write to the Gaurdian of the Web since they have taken over the certificate business so I will write them soon. It is her opinion that it is very likely there will be no certificates. She says the list of personas has gotten so large (there are over a 1,000 heralds alone) that frankly she feels Larry and Misty won't want to sign that many of them. That's a bit of a dissappointment to me. I've spent dozens of hours working on mine already, I've spent many hundreds of dollars on books, art and other Misty related items, and she won't take a second and scribble an M on a peice of paper for me? Is it just me or does this sound a little selfish to anyone else out there? ( I collect her autographs and on half of them that's all there is, the letter M. The most I've ever gotten even when I've paid for autographed items was MRL or M. Lackey.) Does anyone know if she actually signs the release forms? I am writing a story so perhaps I'll get one out of this yet! Also, I actually got a tiny bit more information on the stalker today and it was a fan and it's also part of why they won't go to cons anymore. They were actually receiving death threats from a man who said he was going to shoot them at Balticon two years ago. They still went, but had to wear body armor under their clothes as a precaution and I'll bet they didn't enjoy the con very much at all. In response to Misty being rude, here's another opinion. Misty and Larry actually drove out to Judith's house to meet her a few years ago when they were on a business trip in New York. She says Misty and Larry are both very nice, kind people, but she did add that "Misty will not suffer fools." In other words, if you approach her and act like a real jerk, she'll tell you so. She also suggested that perhaps Misty was simply in a bad mood when you met her. We all have our moody days. She said when they are enjoying themselves at a con, they can be very approachable, lively, fun-loving, playful people. Lady Thess, I'm still a member of Queen's Own and I'm planning on placing a personal in July. Perhaps I could include a message for her, something like this: To Ann from Libby, Montana: Your pen pal misses you and has lost your address, so please drop a note to Thess. To the person who asked about the requirements to become a herald mage: I got the sheet today and the requirements vary depending on what level of skill you want to have. The reqs. for an apprentice aren't too bad, but the reqs. for an adapt are utterly insane. It involves learning stage magic and writing 20 page papers on some pretty dry, complicated topics, such as magick as a form of particle energy and how it is similar to nuclear fusion and/or fission. (If you want adapt status it involves learning 16 magic tricks, two of which are appearing dove and cutting a person in two or more peices, and writing 8 of those papers.) I think I'll be able to get journeyman status at most! To even get a chance at this, you have to roll a 12 on two dice. You may only try once a month, and you can only try for a year, then you must accept your fate and realize you were not meant to be a herald mage. The deck is stacked against you when the odds are 12 to 144 to begin with. If anyone wants the sheet, write me at my personal e-mail address and I'll mail it along eventually when I have the time. Well, I think that's it for now. Liltih went on to become a demon/very evil person/bad wife. She left Adam after Jehovah cast her out of the Garden. He then made Eve and you know the rest of the christian mythos I'm sure. The references to Lilith can be found in the Jewish religion. So, find your local Temple and ask the rabi about it, that's the bst I can offer. I myself have often wondered the same thing, and only specualted about it to my friends who are pagan and read her works. I know that thanks to Mickey I now know how to sheild myself, I was extremly thankful for that bit in Arrows Flight seeing as I'm a strong empath myself, unfortunately only negative feelings seem to get through most of the time....oh well...anyway, she does seem to know alot about magic and psi for one who isn't at least educated in the Art. so I came to the conclusion that if she isn't one herself she has friends who are, I would also hazard a guess that she is probably steeped in the mythology of Old Celtia...errr...The mythology of the Celts...I'd say Great Britian, but I don't car for the norman influence in England proper, the Scots, Welsh and Irish are still pretty much steeped in their past and most of the back country folk are very superstitous/keyed into reality more so than others. I'll leave you with this, a world without it's myths and people who believe them is not a world I wish to live in, Long may the belief in the Sidhe (pronounced shee) live forever and the magic never truly leave the world. It's pretty good too. My sister has read "Insomnia" and she said it was so good she couldn't put it down so I'm saving it 'til summer vacation. That way school won't interfere.
