(Typical Misty pattern for trilogies, near as I can tell: somebody important dies in the first book ['Lendel, Ylsa, Ulrich, Dave in Di Tregarde] and in the third book [Van, Kris].) So far the Storms trilogy has only had the death of one major character, which is a little on the low side for Misty. So we figure somebody else has to go. Becky -------------- When angry, count ten. I've been in church situations where there was more hate between members than love. I do agree that promiscuity is the reason why HIV has spread so far. Let me clarify my statement right now. Sex is not necessarily an act of love. Sex without love, for me, is an unthinkable act. I can understand g/l/b relationships much easier than I can understand promiscuity(love after all has value, but just sex seems a little weird). I've always thought that sex is a sharing of not only body but soul as well. One of them, the one put on by the Royal Chessmen, recently moved, too, but as I have a lot of friends who are in the Chessmen, I knew it was money. (It moved from Snyder park to Topeekeegee Yugnee Park, which is a pity, Snyder Park is MUCH nicer, and quieter.) The other Faire is from the Chessmaster's d' Vizcaya, (an INCREDIBLY beautiful house and gardens and land historical monument) and they put on the Medieval Market Days in one park, and a Faire with a living Chess game in Vizcaya. Actually, they both put on living Chess games. Has anyone who's been to RennFaires noticed the PRICE? Both of the ones near me are around 10 to 12 dollars, and I usually skip the Vizcaya and the Medieval Market days as they are about two hours away from me and the TY Park one is only 45 minutes. (The TY Park one, though has a go-to-all-the-weekends-for-one-low-price ticket for twice the price of one day. I usually get that and go at least three days in order to catch all the shows.) Come to Florida! Go to the Faires--Feb and Oct, usually. Happy Faireing. ///Vrondi, Gurps is a Role Playing Game, with basic rules that then apply to any number of situations. You haven't seen anything. I am a fourth generation Southern Baptist (that I know of - it might be even farther back). I have seen churches split up over whether to have chairs or pews. I tell people that Southern Baptists are either the most caring people you'll ever meet or the most intolerant. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. About the HA..L cassette -- does anyone else think that the tune of "Twa Corbies" sounds a lot like the version of "Winds Four Quarters" that she sings on "Magic, Moondust, & Melancholy"? "Heather on the Phone" is also hilarious. It's a filk version of the traditional "Heather on the Moor" that she has on her answering machine. I've also got a bunch of comments on the Concordance, so here's some spoiler space, just in case. A R R O W S C O N C O R D A N C E S P O I L E R S Chirras (p10 ) -- ok, by the picture, they look like llamas (night? -- nah ;) ). For some reason, by mental image was more like furry ostriches. Don't ask me why, but there it is. :) "Dark and Stormy Night" or "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night" (p14 & p31) -- Here's our proof. It _was_ written by Leslac, about his sister-in-law. The "Empathy" (p18) and "Talia, Queen's Own Herald" (p54) entries both say that Talia has the Mind-Healing Gift. I don't think that it's said right out in the books though. The first also mentions her Farsight as part of her Empathy. No mention of the Thought-Sensing Gift Ylsa mentions though. "Evalie" (p18) -- here's the proof that the Vanyel scene in the beginning of AotQ is fantasy, not historical fiction. It says that it is "The name Talia dreamed would belong to the imaginary Companion she wished would Choose her. In her dreams..." Also, in the "Stefen, Bard" (p52) entry, it says that Talia read about him and daydreamed that he rode with her while Vanyel fought the Dark Servants. "Goddess" (p23) -- It pretty much says that the Goddess is the same everywhere. It even says that the Shin'a'in worship a "four-fold *version* [emphasis mine] of the Goddess" "Gyrefalcon's Marches" (p25) -- Hey Gyr, sound familiar. Ah-ha! That's who those bandits in AFall (IIRC) were -- TMIW!!! (I kind of agree that the !!!!! is getting a bit old) "Meeting" (p38-9) -- makes a mention of Windrider as "the spell-bound heir of Valdemar The Windrider". That makes it seem that Windrider is a title, like Vanyel's "Demonsbane" or "Shadow-Stalker", instead of a use-name. "My Lady" (p41) -- Hah! the story of Dirk's harp that matches My Lady. It says that the harps were the Master-work of a Master instrument builder. They were comissioned by identical twin Bards, and after they died, the harps were separated. Talia searched and found the other harp for Dirk. "Silver" (p50) -- Alberich's Companion from "Stolen Silver". It's odd that the entry doesn't mention that his name is actually Kantor, and the "Kantor, Companion" entry doesn't mention Silver. Boy, that was windy. :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jun 1996 13:32:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Mat Timmerman To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: braiding Message-ID: On Fri, 31 May 1996, Diana L. I don't know that editors making "suggestions" to new authors is necessarily good. I recently read a Compuserve chat with Katherine Kerr (the author of the very good Deverry series (which is how I realized how to pronounce Cennydd's name!)) from a web page. She recently rereleased the first two books from the series, _Daggerspell_ and _Darkspell_. Dagger just has gramatical type stuff changed. According to the author though, the whole ending of _Darkspell_ was changed. When she was knew at pro writing, an editor didn't like the ending to the book. Kerr didn't know that she had the right to leave it, so she changed the ending. And hated it (the new ending and having to change it). So when they got rereleased, she had a chance to fix the ending. The new version of the book now has the real ending. I don't know how it's different though, since I just read the newer. If I did, there wouldn't be any room to write!) I have to agree with you here. I found most of the projects and papers pointless as well. I'd always assumed that the mage requirements mould require one to learn and write about magick and a few of the many papers do involve the subject, but the grand majority of them seem totally unrelated to the herald-mages and their magick. Aside from the papers, what she seems most concerned that her herald-magess learn is stage magic and slight of hand! Huh? Since when did Vanyel ever make coins appear from thin air, or Talia ever restore cut newspaper? I think your ideas on what the requirements for herald mages should be are much better than those that Misty came up with! The Adept-level requirements didn't scan in, so here they are: To earn the rank of Herald-Mage, Adept, first qualify for Hedge-Wizard, Journeyman and Master. Then write a 20-page paper on one of the following subjects--- King Authur as historical figure, the importance and obligations of the liege-lord in feudal society, Plato's _Republic_, the moral and ethical questions of creation and possession of nuclear weapons; submit it to an essay contest or your History Teacher for extra credit. AND write a 20-page paper on the moral and ethical questions of possession and use of Adept-level power. AND write a 20-page paper on the role of arbitration in solving disputes, including the constraints that must be placed on the arbitrator. AND learn the following stage-magic tricks: cutting a person in 2 or more pieces, appearing dove, your choice of card tricks you don't already know, and your choice of close-up magic tricks you don't already know. IMHO, the requirements for Bard, Heales Herald and the Tayledras are no where near as boring and pointless as those for the herald mages! I'm truly enjoying creating my herald persona. (at >this point! maybe I'll improve). Me! I'm definitely an artistic person. Right now, 99% of my work consists of pencil drawings, many of them fantasy related. (I want to learn how to paint as well when I return to college in the Spring semester of 97.) My talent, unfortunately, is only marginal though. I can draw a pretty good still life or model, but I'm not talented enough to be able to successfully transfer mental visualizations to paper. I need a pyhsical representation of my subject to do a decent job on the drawing. I can picture Misty's characters very well too, but have never drawn one. (I did use a photo of a horse to draw a picture of my Companion for my herald requirements. It didn't turn out near as well as I'd hoped though.) With that said, if you (or anyone else out there) would like a couple copies of one of my fantasy drawings, just let me know and I'll snail mail a few for you. Dach. I saw the requirements some time ago when they first came out [Havens, when *was* that..] and thought they were completely rediculous. Papers and essays are for the "Student" community. Lady knows I wouldnt even have the time to sit down and write a 20 page paper with the way my work schedule has been going lately :/ (Then of course, I certainly dont have a History Teacher, and last time I heard about an essay contest *was* in High School. Only essays after that are to try to get scholarships.) Also, on the topics of the papers, some of them I can understand. Partical Physics, yeah, dont ask me why, but it makes sense to me. Stuff on the Constitution and the Crucades, yeah, (If Herald-Mages dont have an impact on the government of Valdemar, who does?) and the Crucades could well be taken into viewpoint as "Karse vs Valdemar (with a few twists)" as far as religion goes. But I definately expected more Magickal points as well.. "Compare organized religion (christianity for example) with an unorganized religion (wicca for example)", "What are the major similarities and differences between Tarot and Runes". I dont know, something like that. I was also going to mention Ethics, but I just now got the Adept level requirements, and that has ethics of nuclear power and adept-level power in it, which was what I was going to mention. > Aside from the papers, what she seems most concerned that her herald-magess > learn is stage magic and slight of hand! Huh? Since when did Vanyel ever > make coins appear from thin air, or Talia > ever restore cut newspaper? I think your ideas on what the requirements for > herald mages should be are much better than those that Misty came up with! Uhm. Would you rather her requirements were to find a Coven and become a High Priest(ess), or learn to read Tarot, or cast Runes? I think she might have, if she could, but there are too many people who would have religious problems trying to fulfill any of those. I think also, that as far as religion goes, the only reason to find out more about any religion (or Magick) should *NOT* be just to fulfill requirements for a fan-club personae. If you want to find out these things because you are interested in them, more Power to you. But making requirements out of them is just wrong. Ack sorry, I'm wandering off on to strange tangents here. I'm tired, can you tell? > (SpiritBlade wonders if she put out those rediculous requirements to > discourage people from attempting to acheive herald-mage status.) Once I > complete my herald persona, if I can roll that 12, I'm going to attempt > to achieve Journeyman status at the most! Call me lazy, but the rest just > seems like too much of an undertaking. Yeah, they're supposed to be hard. They're supposed to keep people from the 'Oh this will be easy, then I'll be a Herald-Mage, WHEE' type of thoughts. Somewhere on here, someone mentioned that only 5% of all the people of Valdemar were Heralds. Care to guess what percentage of Heralds are Herald-Mages? Right now, we only have *one* Adept, though we do have several in training. Not all of which, I might point out, are Heralds. There seems to be a general 'Magic-Users To Valdemar' pilgrimage right about now.
