If they think what they are doing is right, they would be proud to put their names and faces on it. I try not to do anything I would not want my friends and God to know about. Christians (?) have used the Bible over and over again to justify what they want to do (slavery, no marriage between races, looking down on others, denying women any rights, the list is endless). I try to think what Jesus would do in any situation, even if I'm uncomfortable with my conclusion. Enough sermanizing. I like Valdemar because they teach tolerance. (aside: what a great day! great weather, *oodles* of people, great floats and clothing (or lack thereof :-), and cool politicians galore :-) Anyway, I have the name and address of a store in Arlington, Mass. that sells them. They do mail order, and the rings are $15 in sterling silver. I don't think they have them in gold, but I forgot to ask (I was hot and tired and wanted to go home at that point!) Email me if you're interested - I'll pass on the pertinent info. Oh, by the way, they're the style of ring with three bands; two hands clasped that move to reveal a heart. Have a great day/week, all - and (belated) Happy Pride! ;-) And I'm sending everyone who's had a rough time of it some special good vibes ... I took in enough on Saturday to last me for months, and have plenty to share! For anyone who's having a hard time, I heartily recommend your nearest Pride celebration ... every year, its hot and humid and I wake up and can't stand the thought of marching and standing with thousands of other hot, humid people, but I go anyway and have an absolutely amazing time! It's not just the non-English places that have that problem, honest. ------------------------------------------ About the Herald-Mage requirements. Yep, they're pretty silly, especially for someone who hasn't had a history teacher/prof for something like ten years. But I have a somewhat different question that no one else has brought up. Who ever said that being a Herald/Herald-Mage was _fun_? I mean, the training that the Herald-Mages have to go through sounds pretty gruelling, if you ask me, I sure wouldn't want to go through it. It's a big honour and it's necessary, and after a lot of thought and soul-searching the Heralds realize that it's just something that they _have_ to do just because of who they are and the fact that they couldn't imagine _not_ doing it. They _enjoy_(?) being Heralds etc., but do they have _fun_? Not always. Anyway, just a thought. Sorry if I went overboard. ------------------------------------------- Just thought I'd mention that I agree with the _it's none of your business who I chose to date_ line that's going on here. One of my close, female, straight friends has recently married a _gay_ (not bi) man so they can finally realize their dream of having kids together. They have been best friends for 9+ years now and he totally threw her for a loop when he proposed. After much thought, they went through with it, and she is now expecting (she thinks) after only 2 months. The ceremony, by the way, was beautiful, although the tables at the reception didn't _fa-looow_ (aack, did we laugh) like he supposedly wanted. They are adorable together, and she _gushes_ disgustingly. Holy cow, I never realized that I was so long-winded. Anyway, I'm running late so I'd better go get ready for work. Talk to y'all later. Message-ID: <199606101800.LAA15968-+AT+-dfw-ix9.ix.netcom.com> Many people have written (sorry, I cannot get this mail program to copy only parts of messages,grrrrr....) that the requirements to be a Herald, Bard, etc are too difficult. I happen to fully agree with this assessment of the Mage requirements. I vote that Cennydd gets to rewrite them. He has kept Misty's expectations; that we would have to stretch and learn something new to play a part, but done it in such a way that it is applicable to adults as well as stretching critical thinking skills rather than doing pointless research. Personally, I don't even want to think about the requirements for Herald Mage, let alone work on them! (Which of course was Misty's point. There are very few Adept Herald Mages....) But, with regards to the ohter designations, somewhere, (no clue where) I remember reading that it was Misty's feeling that devotion to a fan type club for her work would require work on the fan's part. If you want to have a Herald persona, devote a little of your real life to the requirements, most of which are community service in nature, something in which a real Herald would participate. The same goes for Bardic. If you want to be a Bard, you should know something about music and instruments. First, you can't play your persona well without this knowledge. How can you be a Bard if you can't do anything musical? Second, it is definitely one of Misty's credos that a committment to anything of substance should be a firm committemnt to complete it to the best of one's ability. If your innate talent for something new you wish to try is not stellar, that's not the point. The point is doing your best with what you have. I have not submitted my qualifications for a Herald persona as yet, because I set as a goal for myself, a well written story about how my persona was chosen. Since finding undisturbed time to write is one of the banes of my existence, this is my self-inflicted "stretch" to complete something I am not normally good at; which was, I believe, Misty's point. Sorry to rant here, but it seemed to me the vituperation toward Misty was getting a little out of hand. Its her sandbox; on balance her rules aren't silly. They exist to help you grow. ::getting off soapbox now:: WTTW AliFarr ------------------------------ Date: 10 Jun 96 13:57:32 EDT From: Jake <102744.2515-+AT+-CompuServe.COM> To: M-L mailing list Subject: Re: Book Murder One | What books would YOU save? In my house, there are bookcases all over the place; especially in my bedroom and in the room where the computer is. I find books very comforting (I would LOVE to work in a library or a bookstore!) and I hate giving them away; it's like giving family members away. And when they come back bloodied and broken, I feel terrible. Every time I go to the used bookstore I always come home with five or six (and I bring back only one or two of them, sometimes). It's terrible! But I love my books. Some people would run into a burning house to save their fish or their dog--I think if my house caught on fire you would see me frantically running back and forth to save some more. Which leads me to a question for all of you: (hypothetical, of course)... if you only had time to save TEN books, which ones out of your collection would you save? These are my titles: 10. She _writes_ music. She probably thought it .a good way to get people to learn more. Just a short comment on requirements. I've quoted the requirements for Bards, Heralds, and Hawkbrothers at the end of this message. If you take a look at the requirements in general (and FYI, the requirements for a Bard is BOTH Velgarth Bard **AND** Free Bard.. I was told that) they're not asking you to live a double life as a musician and whatever else you do. A lot of them are the same! The song/poem thing Vrondi mentions is for all three of the ones I have. And some of the other requirements are to "flesh out" a persona.. something that is helpful! If you HAVE to picture what your persona looks like or have her background written out, it's more fun than just taking a moniker or being yourself. They all talk about writing stories, designing costumes, drawing, and other wholsesome work like volunteering. Sure, there are *some* requirements that are related to the "class" of persona you would like, but they're not neccessary--it works like a point system, and you don't need to do every requirement to classify. Bardic-wise (3) I think that becoming fluent with current events or being environmentally conscious is important anyway, whether you are or not musically skilled. It gets a way for you to be more aware. The requirements also help Queen's Own to flourish. One requirement is to start a local chapter of Queen's Own; the other is to submit to a fanzine. The friend I bought the magizine for is in surgery as I write this and I am pretty upset about the whole thing. He needs to have a plate put in his neck to stablize the vertabra that have been damaged by the radiation treatment he has recieved for his leukemia. The kickers to the whole thing is: they have to go in through the front of his neck and he is a professional vocalist (just got a job singing with the Detroit Symphony Orch.) AND they are concerned that his cancer has spread to his lymph nodes, so they will be biops. those during this procedure. And it will be hours before we know anything. Think moving the hands of the clock would speed anything up?? IMHO, I seriously doubt not reading the last 2 gryphon books will affect you when you read the last storm book. If your tight on money, perhaps you may want to wait until they come out in paperback. The best of her novels I wouldn't want to imagine not having in hardback, but I wouldn't call these anywhere near her best work. (Vrondi- I mailed the SFBC infp. a few days ago. Once again, thanks! I can't wait to get my copy of TLHM in hardback! I've gone through an amazing amount of those paperbacks!) >Has anyone else noticed that you can very rarely find any Misty >books at the used bookstore? In our area, there's usually only 2 or 3 if you're lucky! It seems when people get a hold of her books, the don't let them go. (I can't say I blame them. When I do let one of my books go, it always go to a friend rather than a store anyway.) I have the same problem with Gael Baudino too. I just bought The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay, and a)it's incredible even though I haven't finished it yet, and b)he helped compile the notes for the Silmarillion. Cennydd, and all other GGK fans, go get Lions it's a mind-blower, I have to keep putting it down because I don't want to read it too fast, and also because every so often, I have to stop and think about it, what a book!!!!! He's called Master Storyteller on the cover, and it's true. Only 6 books written in his career--under his own aegis--and not a bad one in the lot. wow. ************** I adore Narnia, and my boss (one month older than me, 23-almost-24) just finished reading the last 6 of them, so I go into work and have in depth discussions with him. ************** I think I was one of the first to submit a design for a costume--I did a Court dress--because when I joined Queen's Own, it wasn't on the list. However, if I ever wanted to make another persona, I could submit my teacher of martial arts to say "yes, she's been to my class", which is the only way I could see to prove I'd been, since I don't have any certificates. Maybe I should submit the thesis I'm going to have to write on pressure points that my teacher will require for my promotion to 2nd dan black if I ever get there. (I'm at brown now, and worried that if he doesn't start teaching full time, that's where I'll stop.) If I start working on it now, it might be done in time for that promotion. *************** Hey, Cenydd, just for the record, I believe that atoms/energy are SENTIENT and can dance, it's just that some energy is like a trickster god, and tries to mess things up for fun, particularly during scientific experiments. Can't you see that? "Hey, look at this guy--he's been studying us for three weeks now, let's do something odd and really screw him up!" All this in the voices from the chorus of Vrondi's Eyes, of course. **************** Warning, I may be off list for several days and then come back with a different addy, my sweetie and I want to get rid of AOL, we can't afford it, so I have to figure out Eudora Light, FAST!! It may happen today, or tomorrow, so if it does, I'll talk again, soon.
