On the other hand, I'm the only person I >know who can screw up that dance, so I guess it really shouldn't matter to me... Oh... Okay, here's the thing. In (think think think) Arrow's Flight, after Elspeth is Chosen (goddess, it's been forever ago since I first read that... I must be old -- to which my slightly [okay much] older fiance just sighs and rolls his eyes), it's repeatedly mentioned that they dance in pairs -- Kris dances with both Elspeth and Talia. (I like that line of Selany's -- "Dear, it's your party. If you wanted to ride your companion around the room, it would be alright. I just don't want to be there when you explain to the senschenal how you got hoof marks on the floor." Well, the quote is most likely screwed up, but it was funny, anyway.) However, in (think think think) Winds of Change (my fav in the winds series!), it specifially says "At home, folks danced in groups -- ring dances or set-pieces, with a definite sequence to the steps. The Tayledras danced singly, or in couples, or in trios at most...." (page 42 -- May I please not do the whole legal quote thingy today? *smile*) The first time I read this, and every time since, it's just screwed me up totally. Been lurking around for a couple of months, but after my first attempt at saying hi I thought it was safer to just lurk awhile. Anyway, working 1 fulltime job, running my own home business, and rescuing unwanted critters doesn't leave much time for reading, much less chatting on the list, much to my dismay. Anyway, just wanted to say that we have a GREAT second hand book store here. Everything is 1/2 price and there are usually tons of Misty books, paper & hardback. I've gotten the last 2 Storm books in hardback there for 1/2 price. If anyone would like me to get some for you, I would be more than glad to check on the titles you are looking for. It is such a terrible hardship to go spend an hour or 12 in the used bookstore, but I'll make the sacrifice. Just e-mail me and we'll talk about it (scoot-+AT+-iglobal.net). I think that what we need is something to tie us together. Much like the Companion Web that Vanyel augmented in the LHM. That way we can actually do something about it rather than blankly sending love and peace to an abstract entity. :) Now, unless someone knows some sort of esoteric cybermagery where the net can be used for contact, I might suggest some form of jewelry that we each wear that would tie us all together. :) Even without any form of Magick, such would be a symbol, a reminder that there is a well-spring of Caring here to draw upon. The only problem with this is the possible security risk for some of us untrustworthy ones. :( On another note, I just wanted to thank all the people who wrote their book-lists. I occasionally go to the bookstore and stare; at a loss for what to get. :) Blessed Be (d), Ailima. / / / Ailima-+AT+-TMI-2 || RydWorld / / / Karuna-+AT+-UNItopia || The Mud Hut /=====/ /----/ /----/ /----\ /=== / / /----/ / // / / /-----/ / / /==== /====// / / / _______________________________/ /-----/ /---\ /----/ ---- Frank Fletcher / / / / // / / ffletche-+AT+-uhunix.its.hawaii.edu /-----/ \---/ / // /___ / ffletch-+AT+-carroll1.cc.edu / ___________________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: 11 Jun 1996 08:00:17 -0400 From: "Kimber Brumbaugh" To: "mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald." Here's the scoop: "Be prepared" is the motto of both the Boy Scouts AND the Girl Scouts. "On my honor, I will try...." etc. is the Girl Scout PROMISE. Both organizations have both a promise they recite and also a set of 10 laws they try to obey--and I recently saw an article about the Girl Scout laws being rewritten to sound less passive, using action verbs instead of "To be...." The Boy Scouts were founded first, in England by General Lord Robert Baden-Powell, a hero of the Boer War (around 1902), on the idea of giving boys an outlet for their energy in a constructive and helpful way, and to give them chances to be outdoors learning stuff like camping and scouting (in the literal army sense) as well as service to others. His sister, Olave Baden-Powell, shortly afterwards founded the Girl Guides. A couple of years after that, Juliette Gordon Low, an American from Savannah, GA, who had married an Englishman, was living in Scotland. She felt sorry for the girls she encountered, who were isolated, lonely, and often poor, and started a troop for them, so that they could have some companionship and learn to spin wool to earn some money. After she divorced her husband, she went back to the US and founded the Girl Scouts. I was a Scout for 10 yrs., and every year I gladly donate a telling to a troop of Brownies in a local neighborhood here. If I sound enthusiastic, I was and am--Scouts were the ONLY place that I could interact with other girls my age without hassle, unlike school and church and other activities. I loved earning badges, I loved the camping and crafts; as a Senior Scout, I loved doing volunteer work that helped me figure out what I wanted to do later--and it didn't hurt my self-esteem to know that I could help others, either. Many of the skills I learned in Scouts have been very useful to me since then, and it did me no harm to give back a little of what I had gotten. I will say that I absolutely LOATHED having to sell cookies, and was never very good at it. (It never occurred to my parents to take orders for me from their colleagues at work, or I would have done better. Their attitude was that it was my project, and if it made me uncomfortable to go door-to-door, well, too bad, but that was part of the obligation I took on by joining, and not all of it would be fun. More life skills.....) But I have a lot of happy memories connected with Scouting, and when I went to my 25th high school reunion 4 yrs. ago, the people I most enjoyed meeting again and talking to for the first time in many years were all women who had been in the same troops I had been. Perhaps I was lucky in the troop leaders I had (including my mother--and that was where I began to feel closest to her after a rather distant relationship with her since my earlest memories). Perhaps Scouting was different in small towns in the early to late 60s. If so, that's a shame. But I doubt that I am the only one who has this attitude (not that yours isn't just as valid, you who disagree with me). Someone, I forget who, remarked, "There are no Scouts in Valdemar!" Not that we know of right now, but there are similarities between them and the Heralds. I know, I can hear groaning from here! But there are: the ideas of service, of reaching outward to others who may be different, of learning and sharpening skills, of trying new things. Those are the ideals of Scouting, and those are also ideals of the Heralds. Certainly ideals are not always put into practice, and sometimes they are ignored, but not all the Heralds we have read about in Misty's books meet that ideal either, like that one who gossiped and was full of misinformation about Elspeth's friends. As you can tell, I got a lot out of Scouting that I wasn't able to get elsewhere, so I feel strongly about it. I'm not sure that I agree with it, but I certainly like it! =) ***And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, for your entertainment: Atom and the Dancing Tachyons!*** -----EOM On Tue, 11 Jun 1996, Kerry Mealing wrote: BOQ>>>Subject: Sacred Ground; Was Re: Dragonlance / Gurps / Same-sex marriages. >>>On a pedantic note, women aren't minorities - before I get flamed, let me hasten to add that as a group, they have many characteristics of minorities (discrimination etc etc) but not the definitive one. :)<<< This isn't a flame, but women are a minority. Remember that there are two meanings to the term "minority." One meaning is a statistical or numerical minority and refers to a sub-group consisting of less than half of the full group. By this definition, it is true that women are not a minority. However, the other definition of "minority" is the socio-political term. In this venue, a minority is a marginalized or disadvantaged sub-group which has significantly less access to institutional power than the main group. Such a group is a minority because it is underepresented in the power structure of society. By this definition, women are a minority in most societies. Certainly in the US, Australia, the UK, and other modern societies, this is true. -----EOM On Tue, 11 Jun 1996, Chen Chen wrote: BOQ>>>Subject: New here! >>>I am a newcomer on this list. SWORDSWOMAN was one of the ones I had in mind but couldn't remember. There were kitsune in the SERRAted Edge books???!!! You're kidding! I was just bitching and groaning, really, it's not that bad. But we had absolutely _no_ springtime, going directly from winter coldness and _lots_ of rain to mid-summerly temperatures.
