We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Those are >always the best in my mind. _The Summer Tree_ is just one book of the Fionovar Tapestry (it's a trilogy), and I loved the whole series. I picked up books one and two to take on vacation last month (I think based on Cennydd's on-list recommendation), devoured them, and there I was stuck in Italy for another week not knowing what happened! (Okay, so maybe this wasn't the worst fate in the world, :), but I was still quite relieved to find the 3d book at the bookstore down the street when I got home.) Anyway, I definitely recommend them -- the story is complicated, in a good way, multilayered & very literate. It weaves together many of our ancient stories. And by the end of the last book, I was definitely crying. _Tigana_ (last week I found an autographed hard cover copy in a used bookstore for $6!) also had me bawling! Happy reading! Obmisty: After eating & drinking my way through vacation, I was thinking how much I would enjoy a misty character who likes to cook. This can, however, be overdone, as witness L. Modesitt Jr's Recluce books. If I read ONE MORE WAY to fix Khrypien mutton, I'll go mad! Mad, I tell you!!! I think this is a matter of the author's style; for example, Misty gives great visual character descriptions, whereas Orson Scott Card rarely describes main characters at all. Both methods seem appropriate in the contexts. I'm still upset that there's not even an art major's chance in Astrophysics that the Tregarde books will be continued. I had to order them from my library (note to person told to do this by someone else earlier: my libary gets me books from Arizona and North Dakota, way far away--give it a try) and so I didn't read them in order. The second was was wonderful, the third great, and the first--well, I liked it more than the other two put together. Whatever happened to her "boyfriend" there? It kind of annoyed me, though, because I had written a very similar plotline and I was really enthusiastic about it. Since I read such an analogous concept by Misty, though, I now feel like I can't use it! Aargh! But that's one of my favorite things about her--my natural writing style is a pale, pale imitation of hers; she always does what I'd do, if I could think of it. (Does this make any sense??) Case in point--everybody's talking about characters she kills off. What about her propensity for putting the characters who *do* survive through Hades and back? Only Dick Francis comes close to torturing main characters so much. I find it a nice respite from action movies where the hero never gets scratched (what's so heroic about that?). And you thought DIE HARD and Misty didn't have anything in common . Van asked about commonlaw marriage. If you mean in real life, and in the USA (although I assume the basic concept is the same in most countries), I can answer you that, I used to do a lot of research on the Constitution. On the other hand, if you mean in Valdemar . . . I'd be clueless. (as per usual) Pardon me if I'm rambling. My 3-hour art class has no a/c, & I'm allergic to heat . =) --Herald Rythkana, aka . . . It's one of my personal favorites.<< Let's see........ I'd have to say that _Shadow Stalker_ is the best one I've heard. _Magic, Moondust, and Melancholy_ comes in a close second. Then behind that, _The Oathbound._ All great. I heard that Misty has a terrible singing voice. If _Mercedes Lackey ... Live_ is of the same musical quality of _Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc,_ then I don't want it .. not saying that H^3 is bad in itself, just the production, music, and singing (esp Misty as Queen Selenay) were below par. The lyrics were nice, but "Threes" (to take one example) was a song which I thought could have sounded much MUCH better than the "4 track in the subway station" sound that HHH has... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RE: QUESTION On Jenna's list of books to save: >The Legend of Nightfall by Mickey Zucker Reichart then Arielle responded: >> I love that book too! Silver Dove bought a copy of it expressly for the cover art (Jody Lee), but when she took the time to read the book, she told me it was a "must read" so I gave it a try. It's a book I highly recommend to my pen pals. << Not to be nosy, but are you and Silver Dove the same Arielle and Silver Dove I saw in the recent Queen's Own thing requesting pen pals? What should the symbol be? Something Misty related, I think, but also something that would hold meaning to us as a group if possible. << Why not something Valdemar-related? I mean, if everyone on the list had eight bucks or so, we could all get Valdemar pendants or something. (Actually, that's convenient for me since I have mine on now..) I know you can get them from Firebird... Hmmmm.... something Misty-related. What about a piece of Larry's "art?" Not a real copy, even a photocopy in a cool frame. However - on reflection of my first question - was it the Heralds who were the exception (as, IMHO, I feel that Valdemar is quite a medieaval society in many ways)? << Unlike our world, there seem to be a number of women holding important positions. The only question about first-born daughters succeding to the throne is "Is she Chosen?". Not whether there are any male heirs available. Selenay's Council included several women: Lady Wyrist, Lady Kester, Lady Cathan and Healer Myrim (Arrows Fall p.54-55), none of whom were heralds. IIRC, the Holderkin area is the only part of Valdemar where female heralds do not ride circuit. Perhaps the visibility of women heralds in positions of authority and decision-making made it harder for sexism in the rest of society, but the heralds don't seem to be an exception. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Seranna wrote: >> >Since the influx of some fairly active newcomers, (and Lady knows how many >lurkers).. Mad, I tell you!!!<<< Cennydd briefly considers making a bitchy comment linking this thread with the one about Misty's photo and then thinks better of it. =) Seriously, I think we should start to put together a collection of cool recipes that we think should be part of the Velgarth cultures' cooking. For example, we could have "Holderkin Shepherd's Pie" or "Roast Venison a la Tayledras" and other such things. We could even have fun trying to decide what kind of food would be found in what culture. For example, I see the food of Karse as being very similar to Hungarian cooking. They seem very like the Magyar warrior culture in Karse. Rethwellen would be similar to France of the Rennaissance (maybe?). I see Valdemaran cooking as very similar to British cooking (Goddess help them!) with some admixtures of traditional American cooking (particularly of the Northern states). Now, what do others think? >>>What about her propensity for putting the characters who *do* survive through Hades and back? Only Dick Francis comes close to torturing main characters so much.<<< You obviously have never run across the writings of either Simon Green or Laura Hamilton. The former is one sick, sick individual and his characters almost all die, usually very horribly. The latter writer is the creator of Anita Blake, Vampire Slayer! Da-da-dan! Seriously, if you like the Di Tregarde books, you should try these out. In my opinion, they are much better and Anita is a way cooler character. -----EOM On Thu, 13 Jun 1996, Becky Anne Christensen wrote: [you know, this date is just not possible! The technical explanation of this epiphenomenon may involve pushing, but the term "suck" still has a reference. So there! Hmmmm. I have got to lighten up on the semiotic theory! =) >>>Wait a second, there are too gas atoms, (digs out periodic table from chemistry...darn, can't find it) What about all the noble gases that aren't diatomic? No, that isn't true. (you knew that didn't you! *grin*) Okay, I have this to say. I don't know from chemistry, but I don't think that any of the gases that you are talking about occur in a mono-atomic form in nature. That is, they would not ordinarily be the gases doing the pushing in suction. I was given to understand that even "pure" gases such as oxygen are made up of molecules consisting of 2 or more atoms. Maybe I am wrong (probably I am wrong), but I will maintain that it has nothing to do with the definition of "suck," which is a term that preexists extensive knowledge of chemistry and physics. -----EOM May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences.
