(Of course I read the 2nd one before I read the first one) Other book I've been looking for: I read a book many years ago about a girl who hexed the sea. Her name was Periwinkle (Peri). I cannot remember what the name of the book was or who it was by, but I loved it a lot. Does anyone else know this book? The noble gases - so called 'cos they can't be bothered to react to (with) anything (even themselves) and are diatomic, ie single-atom. (Actually I believe they're called noble gases 'cos they've an equal number of protons and electrons, which is why they don't react easily). There are other noble elements but they're heavier and I can't remember if they're gases or not. All monotomic in their natural form. > That is, they would not > ordinarily be the gases doing the pushing in suction. I was given to > understand that even "pure" gases such as oxygen are made up of molecules > consisting of 2 or more atoms. Well, any [gaseous] pressure difference will result in sucking (even liquids - that's why you can't open submarine hatches outwards underwater), but you're right, the gases mentioned above are only present in trace (minimal) amounts in normal air, which is what's normally causing the sucking reaction. Pure in the context you used above simply means a volume of gas consisting only of one type of molocule/atom. Hence pure oxygen, pure helium, pure hydrogen. Oxygen is O2 (hence two atoms per oxygen molecule), Hydrogen is H2, Carbon Dioxide is CO2 (Oxygen with a Carbon atom attached). Helium is just He - one atom in a gas molecule. Anyway, point being, air's a mixture of lots of gases, not any single one so a number of gases cause the pressure difference. Whew. Amazing how chemistry stuff all flows back. (Excuse the errors that are no doubt evinced above). :) Cheers, Kerry. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jun 1996 22:51:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Mat Timmerman To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Mailing List Casting! I have the first three from the SFBC, the 4th in paperback. I think that Diane Duane has serious problems with the american publisher, so 1-3 are hard to find, and 4 is only in England. DD's homepage has an excerpt from the 5th (not out yet, AFAIK) book, The Cats of Grand Central. I read SYWtBaW a loooong time ago, loved it, and never knew there were sequels. I bought the omnibus from the SFBC because a the description sounded interesting. As I read SYWtBaW again, I came to remeber reading it years before. I still love that book. I shudder when I hear the songs that Misty sings on Heralds, Harpers, & Havok. I'm avoiding the live cassette like the plague. For Misty filk, I'd recommend Magic, Moondust, & Melancholy and Freedom, Flight. and Fantasy. They're not Valdemar (though "Kerowyn's Ride" is on MM&M), but they're good. I've just discovered a few songs I really like on Lovers, Lore, and Loss (Trio, The Cost of the Crown, Battle Dawn). For a filk tape not misty related, try Heather Alexander's "Wanderlust". She's the one who sings all of the songs on Shadow Stalker. She sounds even better on W than on SS. Her Live cassette is great too. Pure oxygen is never found by itself, it always comes in the form of O2 (2 oxygen atoms) Other elements like this are Fluorine, Carbon, Iodine, Bromine, Nitrogen, and Chlorine. These are the only pure elements always found in pairs. None of the noble gases are diatomic (paired) only those seven are. The rest when pure, are found singly, which proves that there are gas atoms. Even the diatomic ones can be referred to as gas atoms, because they aren't compounds, because they are still pure, there are no other elements. Wow, I know all that? Well, I am religous, I am a Christian, Mennonite Brethren if you want to get specific. I don't believe that homosexuality is right, but I also don't believe that it is my duty as a Christian to go around telling homosexuals that they will burn in hell, and condemn them. That's wrong. I don't believe scare tactics will get people into Heaven :) (e.g. If you do (insert sin here) you will burn forever in Hell ( go on to describe numerous tortures and icky scary things, then describe how wonderful Heaven is) That's probably not a good way to witness to people. Our church doesn't support homosexuality, but we will not shut people out or deny them membership because they are. There are many people in our church who sin, and no sin is greater than others. Christianity is about loving and compassion, not condemning and hypocrisy. *^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_*^_ Lady Becky, Goddess of Stress & Dry Breakfast Cereals Everybody wants prosthetic forheads on their real heads *They*Might*Be*Giants* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jun 1996 00:47:13 -0400 (EDT) From: Rosario Holsen-Baker To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Web Page/ Good Read? IMHO, somof Stephen King's works have been his fantasies and he isn't afraid to put his chrarcters through anything. Many of them even survive. If we were to start photocoping a print and sending out mass free copies, would Misty's lawyers come down on us like a hoard of hungry jackels? BTW, I saw your art; very nice. Would you like to trade photocopies sometime? It's not the Christianity that bothers me about that particular religion, it's most of the Christians! However, I have met some in real life, and some on this list, who aren't fanatical about it...more power to them! :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Van wrote: > Someone mentioned commonlaw marriage in a previous posting. In most books like the Valdemar books, it's usually sharing a fire, a meal, and a bed. In terms of our (American) law, I think it's living together for a certain amount of time and then declaring yourselves married. Anyone with actual knowledge of this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dass wrote: > Other book I've been looking for: I read a book many years ago about a > girl who hexed the sea. Patricia A. McKillip! It seems I ahve a lot of these books...out of print, and such...including S&SIII, grace a Kerry . Has anyone read the trilogy by Sheri S. Tepper _King's Blood Four_, _Necromancer Nine_, _Wizard's Eleve_? What about the Gandalara cycle, by I-can't-remember-who? Ummm...Stainless Steel Rat books? Actually they're still in print. Gawd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Midnite Whisper asked about being homosexual + religions...well, my religion (I'm a pagan [Wicca, not the Ancient Greece if-its-not-Xian-it's pagan-thing]) permits it. My religion doesn't care, really, as long as its a love relationship. And I've heard there are some groups within Christianity that permit it, not sure which, though. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Casting, casting, casting...now why does this sound familiar? Okay, Gyr for Skan, Jake for Leslac, Mat for Karal, 'Reesa for Sherril, Cennydd for Alberich, Mel for Kal'e'nel, Heather for Kero. And since it appears I should have an intrest in this...who's Skif? :) Then again...Jake/Skif + Kittengirl/Nyara....hmmmmm....then who would I be? Bother. :) |~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*LADY JAGUAR*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~| | Leader of the Cat People * Lady in Green * LGMCB Conspirator * DHTBB Lobe | | "I believe That if you knew just what these tears were for | | They would just pour Like every drop of rain..." | | --Tears for Fears "I Believe"-- | ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jun 1996 00:23:37 -0500 From: Salli Bird To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Braid: minorities/sexism in Valdemar? There is still a lot of such nonsense. and it shows up in the work place, as well as in more casual situations. We, meaning women, are taught to not rock the boat on this topic, so it just keeps on going. _____________________________________________________________________ Clarissa Smith wrote: >Bridget is right, Misty doesn't pay much attention to food.>I think this is a matter of the author's style; for example, Misty gives >great visual character descriptions, whereas Orson Scott Card rarely >describes main characters at all. I have been approached so many times by females, and agree with your friend. It is not for me. But not for the same reason.
