And as far as I know, the term applies after 6 months. It also applies if the two people have a child together, no matter how long they've been seeing each other (okay, no silly grins) or how long they've actually been living together. For income tax purposes, anyway. And now that I've continued to read the posts, several others said basically the same thing, so it is a fairly common definition, I guess. I >know you can get them from Firebird... The thing with getting Valdemar pendants or the like is that EVERYBODY can get them. It wouldn't tie US together very strongly. Actually, the reason why I suggested jewelry in the first place was that, with a good imagination (or not), it can be used to create a REAL "Web" as well as just being symbolic. ppl could have a choice as to what they wanted to see it as. I actually didn't mean jewelry, I meant some sort of stone (set or unset, engraved or unengraved). This would also give the "feel" of a "Focus"; The kind that Van tied the web to. Actually, the whole jewelry thing was half in jest...although the "sentimental value" suggestion was not. I am glad that it was taken that way. :) Re: Book Lists Again, thank you all for writing the lists. :) I went to the bookstore tonight, and brought a hardcopy along. Funny thing is that I forewent all the suggestions, and instead took the tried and true. What really happened is that I saw Cary Osbornes new book on display... Which kind of brings me on to a different topic: The other day, I heard mention of Eastern culture in books (or not). The first author that comes to mind is Lustbader. (Although I don't enjoy most of his books) There is a bit of it in Cary Osbornes books. The main area where this comes out is in Iroshi's training in Kendo/Kenjutsu/Iaido/Iaijutsu. I thought this was quite well researched and portrayed. But it is not a very large part of the culture...rather it is an eastern fighting system and the philosophy surrounding it. (Note that sword fighting and samurai played a very large part in Japanese history). I am rambling. *laugh* I do that often enough don't I? Anyways, Iroshi is a female warrior, a ronin (masterless samurai), and they are about her lifes trials. The other thing about book lists is that a fire alarm DID go off in my builing on Sunday. Unfortunately, and shamefully, the only thing I did was turn off appliances, pack my knife, my money, a rope, warm clothing, my CURRENT (was) book, and a wet towel. I never even thought to save my books. *cry* *hides* 'Reesa's Pieces: > I died. I don't care if it was only 85 in the house, I still died. > Arizona is an evil, awful, cruel place. Dearie, I don't feel all that sorry for you. :( First of all, you are lucky that AZ is so DRY. Take that heat and stick 80%plus humidity with it... I LOVED AZ! :) Of course, I was mostly, quite a ways further north than Mesa... *hehe* Which goes to show...not all of AZ is hot. Run up to Flagstaff and you have snow and pine trees. Even in the Sedona area (where I was) we had snow and pine-trees. And that is almost smack in the middle of the state (gets roughly cooler the further north you go) Anyways, AZ has the whole range. :) > Queen of Everything. The funny thing about Heralds is that they get little choice about their duties. They are Chosen into the job. That may have been the reason why they are so open about women in positions of strength when compared to the inhabitants of Valdemars neighbours. I think this attitude must surely trickle down to most of the citizens of Valdemar...especially those that have alot of contact with the heralds. >What about her >propensity for putting the characters who *do* survive through Hades and >back? It's "Cat Scratch Fever" by Tara K. Harper. CSF is the only book of hers that I ever read. And even though I had a very difficult time with it, I still want to continue with another of her books. I don't think New York recognizes commonlaw but, when I lived in Oklahoma, they did. You had to live together for seven years and have homes (either rental or owning) together and have accounts together - well that sort of thing. I think heat is a relative thing. When I moved to NYC from the desert of California, I was only warm in the subway (and this was in the summer). When I lived at the beach, I was comfortable at 70 degrees. When I lived in Oklahoma, it felt cool when it got down to 95. In Arizona, I had to turn the air conditioner up to 85 or it would go 24 hours a day (one night it didn't get below 95). Now in Syracuse, I die at 75. I like the way Misty has different areas, languages, countries, ways of living, etc. in her stories. I can't stand books that assume everybody is under the same government in the whole world. It may simplify the plot line, but it sure doesn't feel real. In fact, I learned most of it by seeing how other people did their pages, using the View: Dpcument Source in Netscape. That will show you all the programming codes. I'm about to resubscribe to a classical music mailing list, I didn't have enough time during to school to stay up with this one, and the class-m one. There are several religions that "allow" homosexuality, but that doesn't mean that the practicioners always follow their religious teaching. For example, the Catholic Church recently made a doctrinal statement to the effect that homosexuality is probably not a sin in God's eyes (but that homosexual behavior is still sinful in the same way that heterosexual behavior out of wedlock is a sin). That doesn't mean that Catholics all over the world immediately went out and embraced their lgb brothers and sisters in faith. For the record, here are the major world religions and their attitudes towards homosexuality: Christianity: varies from denomination to denomination, but almost all varieties have some support for lgb members. Only a few actually permit homosexual behaviour though (most limit themselves to accepting homosexual identity). Groups that are especially accepting are the Metropolitan Church, the Episcopalian Church, the Unitarian Universalists, and a few fringe groups. Judaism: officially condemns homosexuality, although some reform synagogues do have support programs, etc. Some branches of Judaism, however, are accepting of homosexuality and there is a movement in the Jewish theological community to promote wider acceptance of lgb Jews. Islam: officially, Qur'an condemns homosexuality completely. However, the Shari'a (or religious/legal interpretations of Qur'an) does not follow this policy. The Shari'a interpretation that is followed in most muslim countries is that homosexual identity and behavior are acceptable as long as they are kept utterly private. A man is expected to marry, have kids, fulfill his religious duties, etc. If he wishes, in addition to this, to be gay, that is fine as long as he is discreet and his wife is agreeable. I gather that a similar pattern is accepted for women. Buddhism: officially accepts homosexuality as much as it accepts any kind of earthly tie. There are traditions of homosexual behavior throughout buddhist history and they are almost never condemned on the grounds that they involve homosexuality. They are usually condemned on the grounds that *all* ties with things of this world are suspect and damaging. Hinduism: varies. The religion doesn't really say anything, one way or the other, but the strong cultural influence of the Hindi culture means that in practice, Hinduism strongly condemns homosexuality, although it is allowed to exist on the margins of society and hidden deep in the closet. Animism: Most of the primal and animistic religions view homosexuality as a source of power and spiritual strength. However, outside of the role of shaman, a homosexual is usually not accepted as they may be considered tabu. Anyway, that's a start. If I think of any more, I will write. My father in law had 4xbypass surgery, just about the time everyone was sending me hugs for my lost horse. We were all very worried as he had several heart-stopping (literally) episodes before he turned the corner. He is now recovering well!!!!! (5-for good reason!) Wonderful news in an otherwise roteen week. OBMisty: I was wondering how they treat heart disease in Valdemar. I would think it would be amenable to healing, as a healer could go to a cellular level and dissolve the blockages. Easier to treat than cancer that has spread. That would be hard for a healer to find.
