I think it is one of Mercedes best short stories, or works period... Yeah yeah, it's only 5 pages long, but still... I don't know... It's like the end of Mists of Avalon (no I won't spoil it...) or Magic's Price... Very cold, very quick, and HEARTWRENCHING... I was in tears... The worst part about it was I handed it to my mother (who was very curious about why I was sniffling in the middle of a bookstore)... She read the first page and said "This is about magic... I don't want to read this!" I got her to read the whole thing, but she took it all wrong... Not to knock any religion, but my mother is a very closed minded pentacostal (and my father's a very closed minded southern Babtist, so my open mind doesn't go over real well with them... And they don't know the half of it...) She said it was saying that witchcraft is ok, and that people don't need God if they have magic... She called me a fool when I tried to explain the meaning of the story... Saying that it implies that magic is hope, rather than the true message of the story (I'm trying to be vague for those that haven't read it...) I was wondering if this is a common misgiving among Christians... Not being one myself (Although I was raised southern babtist, I've taken my own paths... One of the many things they don't know and could never accept about me...) I know the reactions I've gotten when I've passed out copies of Magic's Pawn (Many people won't read past Tylendel and Van's first 'encounter') and I wonder if there is a commonality between taboos... Is fantasy magic considered a Christian taboo? Do others share my parents belief that reading such material leads to dabbling in the real thing? On the same note, where do you think the line should be drawn between a parent showing their child their beliefs and inflicting them on their child? - Shadow-Lover (Who got waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic there, but hey, being dead has some privlages, at least auntie mel can kill me! Sam the Eagle could play Trevyan (or is it Trevalen? Oh, the one that's a gryphon.) The Count as Lord Rendan ("Vun Herald, Two Heralds! Ah ah ah ah!") Janice as Elspeth. As I recall, in the Oathbound, Kal'enel shows up to Kethry at one point and says "I am only another face of your own Lady Windborn" (no textenv, sorry, but it was after that 2nd run-in with the demon) However, somewhere in the Winds (I think it was Winds of Change) Gwyna says "We dont know much about the Shin'a'in Goddess, and we dont really trust Her" (I think I got that slightly wrong). Diane Duane did a superb job on what is supposed to be a kid's book, and I keep hearing that in the UK, a 4th one is out, and a 5th one is going to be published. I WANT THEM, and alas, I'm stuck in Fl, with only a good friend who's mom lives in England to help...wait a minute, maybe I can get him to get her to bring it over when she comes! **************************** Ok, my Children, I also have to say that I'm flattered to be cast as Natoli, I loved her no nonsense way, even tho' personally, I have about as much mathematical ability as a tree. But I loved Natoli a lot!!!!! ***************************** Next, my new addy is khethael-+AT+-bridge.net and if you see the name David Snyder come up, ignore it, he's my sweetie, and it's his account. ******************************* I don't know if the message is going to come through, so YES, I'd like to collaborate on the cookbook, Cennydd. I seem to remember one of my american friends going on about how green the UK is in the summer, Sort of the wooded countryside type thing. I must admit that the weather in Valdemar seems to follow the UK patern quite well. Lots of rain, a bit of snow, and sunny and enjoyable summers. Though I think that the farm lands are probably more like France. I remember this being dicussed ages ago,( by ages I mean a couple of years ago) How big is valdemar? I am trying to think in terms of weeks it took the herald to go from the capital to the borders, 2-3 weeks? Any suggestion on the speed of a companion 20-30 miles an hour? I would look at the maps I have in the books but alas I sent them all home since I am looseing my flat over the summer. I still can't belive the amount of crap I have gathered in the three years at university (Quite a lot are books) Ian (who has been on this list for just over 2 and half years. I think I am the only Scotsman living in Scotland on this list?? anyone wont to correct me?? So watch what you say *GRIN*. Just as well you didn't say who told you that one or I would be sending them a nasty email about not making jokes about a Scotsman's personal life *grin* Ian (enjoying the sun from his computer terminal, Yes it actually not raining in Scotland for once ) < all of a sudden a whisper of sound occurs then the sound of a body hitting a keyboard. Where'd she learn that, anyway? All I can Oops...sorry. :) It's been ages since I read the origional...since it first came out. But from what you describe, I know lots of ppl like that! :) Whats more, I know men like that too. If you ever get around to The Glaive, you will notice that she has matured (if you want to call it that) since then. say is, her mind wasn't nearly clear enough to go void-hopping. (BTW, I don't study kendo, I'm just strangely but deeply attracted to iaido. I study Tibetan White Crane gung fu.) Hmm...hard to say about the void. I DO like that it was put into the book though. It's a major part of Japanese sword-study and philosophy. I'm not sure I agree totally with the way it's portrayed. But oh well. --- Livestock BTS: Kerowyn thinks, "This business of buying fress food every time they halted has its advantages. Given the oppurtunity of making twice an animals normal price, in midwinter when there was no possibility of other money coming in, most farmers and herders could manage to find an extra male, or female past baring. ... " >IIRC, a Hardornan mage used illusion (::sigh::) to turn a cow into this >really cool unicorn/ki-rin firebreathing thingy to ride. Was it only a glamour? There's no evidence either way, but MY impression was that it was a little more than just the illusion. >The Valdemarans didn't find out until they shot it and the mage was >suddenly sitting on top of a cow. :) My copy says that the cow never was shot...it was the mage that got shot...and whose death released the cow from spell hold. After Kerowyn shot him, he wasn't sitting on the cow anymore. :) I hate trying to remember things by memory. :( Just clarifying... Didn't Meke have a fight with his dad over sheep or something? In a letter to Van in Magics Promise, "He's taken the cattle - good, solid income-producing stock - off Long Meadow and installed sheep down there instead!" The letter was from Withen btw. --- Women >Does anyone remember a woman landholder? ack...I seem to remember at least two attending a council meeting. As >it stands now, any old schmuck can be a land holder-and potentially cause >a lot of havoc!-but CAN'T be chosesn? Something just doesn't sit right >with me here. Basically, any person can hold land. However, I think the land has to be granted to a family first. They can and occasionally DO wreak havoc. :) But thats a part of heralds field-duty. To sort out that havoc. Why doesn't that sit right with you? IRL, we humans have a history of having stupid or greedy barons and assorted other title/land holders. Not to mention actual leaders of COUNTRIES. I agree with whomever it was that mentioned the difference between a heralds duty and a landholders duty. Not to mention that there aren't enough Heralds to properly defend Valdemar, let alone take care of everyday landholding duty. --- Fletching >Do we each get our own fletching (sp?) pattern??!!??
