First, the knowledge wasn't really lost, just suppressed. All the old books on magic were still there, but nobody looked at them. And IIRC the Bards still had some info about it, that's why Talia insisted on their presence at Ancar's attack in the Arrows trilogy. And second, what good would the knowledge about magic have been for, if nobody knew how to use it? After Van was gone, there was no Herald-Mage to train others, and non-chosen Mages couldn't get into Valdemar because of the Vrondi. (Ok, one might argue that a Mage could have been chosen as soon as s/he entered Valdemar. It could have happened, but it didn't, so we have to accept that, I guess.) It wouldn't have been any good for the people of Valdemar to sit around and mourn the loss of magic. That wouldn't have accomplished anything and probably only have been the more dangerous for them. And of course the faith/belief in the Heralds without Mage-Gift had to be restored. Thoroughly and permanently. So the most logical and most reasonable thing to do was to make people forget that there ever had been Herald-Mages, at least as long magic didn't work in Valdemar. Herald-Mages weren't per se better Heralds just because they were magic-gifted, they just had different gifts. Remember the discussion we had about the (ridiculous) QO requirements for Herald-Mages? Someone (Cennydd, I think) pointed out that it is very important to have knowledge about history, government etc (hence the 20-pages essays on these topics). I agree that this is important, but why should it be more important for the Mages than for the Non-Mages among the Heralds? So why should "ordinary" Heralds not be required to possess that same knowledge, only the Mages among them? Gross incoherency, IMO. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.2: information about other ML-related groups (AOL, Genie & USENET); explicit address for feedback. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jun 1996 11:25:22 +0100 (BST) From: jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Jerry Cullingford) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Southern Baptists/Arizona/Logical Thinking Message-ID: <9606191025.AA13856-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk> > OBMisty: There are no differing interpetations of the Star-Eyed's > religion! What software is involved, how do I invoke it, and what are the chattiquette rules? Is there a software version that'll let me compose my reply without having it getting broken up by incoming snippets of conversations? (yes, I'm a closet Basidiumite! or is that an oxymoron?) when or why it happened. Also, I have a vague recollection of a paperback called 'Tea with the Black Dragon' (author presently unremembered) who I think was called Chinthliss - the same one that Tannim mentions as being his teacher. Am I off-base on this? The book is one that disappeared during the first burglary, and I haven't been able to replace it yet, so I can't cite textevd. (Sorry, Cennydd!) Also, there seems to be a discrepancy between Diana's portrayal on the cover of 'Jinx High' and the text description of her inside (sorry, no textevd - me-+AT+-work, book-+AT+-home). Imagine New Hampshire's humidity, only a bit more of it, and a bit hotter. Totally trees. everywhere. I love the trees, and I love the mountains, but I suppose this humidity is the price we pay for it. We are currently without air-conditioning here, and we are all taking cool showers. Alrighty, after some searching, I found the verse - its not the one about Abraham and (Isaac?) and its not a Greek legend either. Judges 12: 29 - 40 has the full story - and there's no last minute redembtion, the king (Jepthah) does offer up his daughter in "burnt offering." BTW, some other interesting verses (?) are: 1 Kings 22: 18 - 23, which shows God as a spiteful liar; Ezekiel 20: 21 - 26; and Judges 19: 11 - 21: 25 - this has some rather graphic content, and shows God supporting some things that we might not find as acceptable... Anyways, I'd better sign off before I start *really* offending people... I have noticed that quite often, people will use the same words, but the words mean different things to different people, causing misunderstandings. Has anyone else noticed this? ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ >Southern Baptists have always believed in the priesthood of the >believer and the autonomy of the local church. Please excuse me, the rest of the list. The convention is in opposition to the Word with this position. As text evd, I would like to point out Acts 17:11 and John 5:39. These were addressed to groups, not single entities, or just leaders. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ Becky Cary wrote: >> Harmful? And I thank God for giving me the sense to see through the bull enough to overcome the damage done to me, which my sibs haven't figured out yet, no matter how it is presented to them, or how much I plead with them to see sense. I know, first hand, how much damage can be done to a child due to bad parenting. On the other hand, I am distressed to the core of my being by the psychologists who are interfering with the role of parents. So it sounds like a contradiction? Sorry, but I still think it takes a group of qualified adults to say how children should be raised, and I don't see how a childless person qualifies. Being a parent involves a lot more than is generally realized. And the persons teaching parenting really should have *some* experience. And I agree that parenting classes would be beneficial, as long as they do not include some shrinks theories, so a paper can be written. Disclaimer: To all shrinks, shrink types, shrink wannabes, and shrink friends; I believe your hearts are in the right place, but the theories stink. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Barbara Jacob-McDowell wrote: > Someone mentioned using old refrigerators as (cheap) safes in case >of fire.
