I dont know about anyone else, but I always got the impression that "Vrondi" was the magickal term/name for the little elementals. How they had to be addressed, regardless of the language the mage actually spoke. I thought Kethry also refered to vrondi, though I dont recall they're being mentioned in any of the Mage War trilogy. The reason why they _are_ Shin'a'in. "Eternal vigilance" was, IIRC, one condition the Star-Eyed made before turning the place where Urtho's tower used to be into the Dhorisha Plains, giving those clans who rejected the use of magic a place to live. And how could they guard the Plains properly if they didn't know _what_ they were guarding? I think it was common knowledge, since it was "written" into the tapestries which were kept at Kata'shin'a'in, guarded by Swordsworns who were sworn to the Crone-aspect of the Star-Eyed. (WoFate, Kraheera takes Trevalen to this house after they have learned of Elspeth's and Skif's arrival, chapter something-or-other; sorry, but you know the drill, books-+AT+-home...). Maybe the tapestries weren't publicly accessible for all the Shin'a'in, only for the shamans, but they certainly taught the rest of the clan what they had learned. Oy. In fact, she seemed a lot like Kerowyn to me. Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to bat around which characters (from other book-universes or even Velgarth) people think of as characters that had "those damned Herald morals." As a side note (or maybe not) I think that Tarma would be a good one (once again, though, lacking a Gift). Which made me think that Kalenadral (which I can never spell) are really awfully close to Heralds. No textev, but when the Stareyed met Roald and his companion didn't she say something to the effect of "Well met, children of my other self. Should I make sable companions to match the white?" Heyla Khenta, "red-neck" is an American colloquial term for a very conservative, unsophisticated country person. The origins of the term are sometimes explained (in certain regions) as refering to the red dirt that collects on a farmer's neck when he is working in the fields. However, since not all of the areas with red-necks have red dirt, the more accepted explanation is that it refers to the red, sun-burned skin on a farmers neck. The term red-neck has connotations beyond its definition and refers to a particular type of farmer/peasant. Among other things, red-neck also connotes "bigoted," "rough," "uneducated," etc. However, red-neck also carries meanings of "all-american," "patriotic," and "hearty, once they get to know you." It is not an entirely bad term. For example, my father takes great pride in being an "un-reconstructed red-neck" from the boonies of NCentral Pennsylvania. (Boonies, BTW, means the wilderness areas). I'm baaaaaaack! (Aaaah---run for you lives!) Yes, I'm back from my trip home. (Friends are fine, cat's fine, family's insane, sister graduated from college! Great rejoicing was heard throughout the land!!) I came back to 24 digests, up to 30 before I could catch up. My, but y'all have been chatty while I was gone! : ) So, now that I'm all caught up, I thought I'd add my 0.02 to some of the threads that have gone around. Please forgive me if some of this is a little old (after all, so'm I--another year has come and gone). Such lovely weather I returned to. Last I heard, the humidity was 93%, and the temp is supposed to reach 93F (34C). Did I mention that the AC is broken here at work? (Now, tell me again, why did I get up this morning?? Oh yeah--to check my mail! ) _________________________________________ Second, a belated "Welcome to the list!" to all the new members. And a teary farewell to those of you who're leaving. __________________________________________ Third, my deepest sympathies to those of you who have been suffering the loss of someone dear. Sandy, I'm happy to hear that Tim is doing well; my thoughts are with both of you. I send cyber-hugs to all of you. ___________________________________________ Heather, what happened to your friends sickens me, and makes me extremely angry! I am appalled that things like this still happen! I keep hoping that we've gone beyond hate crimes such as this. Hearing about this kind of thing almost makes me give up on humankind, and want to become a hermit somewhere. Heather, dearest, please know that not everyone feels this way, and that you are a much-loved member of our little community. I know this doesn't really help, and I sincerely wish there *was* something I could do that *would* help! My thoughts are with you, as well. ______________________________________ Someone mentioned the different creation stories in the Bible. Thing is, there were four (I think, could be five) different authors. At some point, the different versions were combined into one. (I don't have the textevd with me, but a professor of mine in college wrote a book on the subject, and gave us the abridged lecture in class. Quite interesting.) Anyway, that's why there are different versions of a few things, and why God's "personality" seems to alternate between forgiving and judgemental. _____________________________________ Lady 'Reesa, Queen of Everything, I send you a chocolate souffle with raspberry sauce (you'll have to share it with Lady Goddess Thess, though). How's that for tribute? For my late penalty, I'm sending whipped cream to go on top. Bon apetite! ____________________________________ Wildfire, I'd go with either Herald White or Ceremonial White feathers, depending on whether you usually wear gold or silver jewelry, watch, etc. ___________________________________ As for casting, my thanks to the people who suggested Selenay. Who, me?? I've never seen myself as the regal, noble type. (I'd picture myself more as Elspeth. I'm a stubborn wench!) I'll send my list in a separate post. Anyway, that's enough ponderings out of me! I like the sin being inhospitality, that's way cool, and MUCH more keeping in line with the characteristics of the Old Testament. General immorality (when the overwhelming sin is inhospitality) seems like it would be much, much less geared to sex, and more towards...littering, or disrespecting the earth, or some such (to me) more offensive sin than going against what a book says!!! 2)As far as the Qur'an/Koran goes, I agree with the Muslims! If I ever read it, I want to learn Classical Arabic, because "the map is not the territory." and it seems much more respectful than reading it in a language that it wasn't intended for. In another language, the "map" changes, meaning that a person's morals can change based on the fact that what may be a sin in American may not be in Arabic! Right now, though, I want to learn Japanese, because if I learn how to read and write Japanese, I can understand Chinese books too. (the ideograms are the same, only the pronunciation is different.--got that from a man who comes from China, says that if he wants to talk to a Japanese person--seldom--Chinese are still angry over the lack of apology for all the times Japan ran through them--all he has to do is write to him.) Also, if I learn Japanese, I can practice by watching Ranma videos in Japanese, and close my eyes, and translate. 3)Lady 'Reesa can't name you God of Karma, Cennydd, that's me, and I will add you to the list. Keep on the lookout for my major ceremonial post folks, it's coming. Rednecks are seen as uncivilized trash. (I'm not saying I agree with this, don't flame me.) Rednecks who don't like to beat people up without a good reason are still called rednecks, but the connotation with them is much nicer. A person can be a nice redneck, but generally speaking, it's not used by non--rednecks except as an insult. Anyone else want to give this definition a crack? I think I just loused it up.
