We actually know very little of the world. For instance, where would the dieties of the Southern Empire (Black Kingdom) fit in? We know the Eastern Empire (at least officially) worship their emporer. What power does that give him? Can he become a demi-god that way, a'la Thalmarkish (was that his name or was that a place?) the demon? Again, the question comes down to what do we know and what don't we know. And what of what we know is just belief and nothing more? Until an aspect of the Shin'a'in Godess casually comments, "Oh yeah, and btw, I was dating the Sunlord for a while" or "PFF! The sunlord is just another of my aspects" or "HUH? The SUNLORD? I will have NOTHING to do with him!", all we can do is speculate. And all it will come out to is personal belief. I'm going to be visiting my dad, and I may have e-mail access while I'm there, so I'll try to be in touch with some of you. I'm desperately trying to get all of my personal mail replyed to before I leave, but I also have to finish that stupid school report, get my new glasses, pack everything I want with me for 6 weeks, and get my learner's permit so my father can teach me to drive. And there is of course the most difficult thing of all. What books do I take with me? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! If you're interested in writing to me over my period of enforced normalcy, please send me your address before Monday night. Thanks. ObMisty: I always felt sorry for the Heralds when they went on their internships, and the field Heralds. Not only were field Heralds all alone for a year, they didn't get to bring any books with them, and Talia must have just died without the library. Although that policy of not taking any books out of it seemed a little silly to me. These are Herald trainees, it's not like they aren't going to return them. Can you imagine a Companion yelling at you because you forgot to take a book back? I bet it wouldn't happen twice! Well, from a reader's point of view, we like to have lots of things happen to the characters so they become interesting. We generally only have a short time to get to know them in depth, so the author has to create situations where they can show their stuff, or grow. World changing events give those who might remain obscure a chance to shine. Face it, "World famous general wins 39th battle" doesn't have the emotional kick of "Farmboy rallies country and leads folk to unexpected victory". IMHO (left out the H the first time - but it wasn't intentional ::really, she protests::), a lack of antagonistic events or people is the core problem with SG. Because Tad and Blade are just in a sort of nasty situation that they have been specifically trained to deal with, the whole thing is sort of ho-hum. Using the wyrsa to drive Tad and Blade back into the non-magic area to meet a mage who was capable of destroying them unless they learned how to work as such a good team that their capabilities together would allow them to defeat him - now there's a better story. (and the longest run on sentence on the list this week!! :)) Add in some real conflict as they learn to work together in a non training situation and NOW you have a story. SG almost seems like the prologue for another book. Back to work now...... The idea is that when God spoke to Mohammed, he spoke in Arabic. This the fundamental difference between the Bible and Qur'an. According to the Islamic tradition, Qur'an was dictated, word-for-word, by God. It isn't so much that reading a translation is disrespectful as it is that reading a translation is pointless. You are no longer reading the exact verbatim copy of God's speech. Chinese and Japanese are different languages. Although they use substantially the same writing system, the languages are totally unrelated, and this can still create problems with reading. For example, if I write the sentence "boy dog chase" and you know what all the words mean, that still doesn't mean that you understand what I wrote. The written communication that does occur between Chinese and non-Chinese is usually fairly simple and limited. Also, Chinese and Japanese do not exactly use the same characters (at least not PRC Mandarin). Most of the characters are the same, but the PRC has been in process of simplifying the characters and there is considerable discrepancy now. Not that I am trying to discourage you, but you should probably learn Japanese for itself and not for the idea that you will be able to read Chinese also. Otherwise, if your primary goal is to learn Chinese, I would suggest switching to that language and study it directly. >>>3)Lady 'Reesa can't name you God of Karma, Cennydd, that's me, and I will add you to the list. The "regular" form of written Japanese (by "regular" I mean the from that I've seen on Japanese products/texts, the form most frequently used in Japan) is different from Chinese. (I forget what that form is called...). A Chinese person would not be able to read that form of Japanese (unless of course, he/she just happened to also know it). However, yes, it IS true that a Chinese person may be able to communicate with a Japanese person since the Japanese person would have probably learned BOTH "forms" of the language (Actually, I think there may even be three forms..). BTW, those words ARE Chinese. According to my dad, who has a fascination with Chinese history, long, long ago, an emporer (sp?) from Japan sent a ship of scholars to China to learn the language. Of course, it also depends on which from of Chinese you are referring to too :) (if you are taught the long form of Chinese, then, no problem... Its the Judeo-Christian faith in one god. That god (sorry..don't know much about christianity), afaik, for christians, is almost a gestalt entity. So He is, if only in part, my God too. Both of these are very pacifist religions, but they weren't always so. Horrible acts were commited in the name of God, and in the not-so-far-distant past. The Abraham-saac story is about how one should be willing to sacrifice all for your faith, no matter how important. I find this a rather disagreeable message considering that basically, its saying a man should be willing to kill his own child for the good of his religion...God is no loving father. He KILLS. I truly doubt many people would have gone fore a "peaceful, loving, caring god" back in 300 c.e. OTOH, if this god would give them POWER, if this god could smite down their enemies...then hell, yeah, they're all for it! To paraphrase a quote from this very list earlier this year "I don't know how much faith I can but in a God who turns his people into condiments." You can claim that "The New Testament takes precedence," but our religions share a past, blood and all. There's been talk about God as a judge or father. In reality he is both. He does love everyone, and always will, but he's also not a pushover. There's a verse in there, something along the lines of Be either hot or cold, if you are lukewarm, I will throw you out of my mouth. Also one about standing begore the throne of God, and having him say, I don't know you. He will judge, he is the only one that should judge, and if we don't come up to his standards, he'll let us know, and we won't be able to do anything about it. It will break his heart, but he will judge everybody. And of course, everybody will fall short, but all that we can do is try our best. Thinking about standing before God, and having him judge scares me, frankly, every sin I've commited, and there's no making excuses for any of it, the only reason is because I'm selfish, and didn't care. God is many things, and has many personalities and emotions, after all, we were made in the image of him, and we have emotions. He loves, and he also gets sad, and even angry, and sometimes even furious. And he has the right to, he gave us everything we need, and look what's happened? People killing each other for no reason, hurting other people, just being mean. Doesn't that upset you? So doesn't it follow that it would upset God? This probably didn't come out the way I wanted it to, but I gave it my best shot, I'm terribly sorry if anything sounded judgmental, it's not supposed to be, it's just my best guess at explaining things. The other thing is that the Mercedes Lackey Mailing List will also be moving now, the new adress (which is working right now, along with the old one) is going to be: http://www.psnw.com/~deb/becky/misty.html If you have any bookmarks, please change them, and change any references, things may go screwy for a while, hopefully nothing will be eaten or anything. I meant _The Silver Gryphon_, not _Sacred Ground_. The original post (which got snipped) wondered about SB, and said (whomever it was) that SGryphon was a dissapointment. Sorry about the mix up. As it is, I haven't read Sacred Ground yet. I think I'll read it next. Another description of rednecks are simple people. No, I do not mean simple-minded, just simple in needs and wants. Most of the rednecks, also called 'cracker' in Florida, I have met are blue collar, love their families, own pickup trucks on giant wheels, wear jeans, boots, and baseball caps, and love country music. Also, they are among the nicest, loyal people I have ever met! Really down to Earth and fun to be with. Except for the music, we get along. I don't think they all appreciate being called redneck, though. One unflattering name I have heard is 'white trash' but don't know if this term is accurately used for rednecks. Of course, there are the rednecks who aren't honest, and are prejudiced. But name me a cultural group who doesn't have these types of people! BTW, not too many boonies where I live, but plenty of rednecks! I can never remember if some people give goodbyes when they leave the list. Message-ID: <199606220150.SAA20502-+AT+-sprynet.com> Bright Blessings ! Sylver Dove here, I'm putting in my two cents as to which books I'd bring with me if my house were burning. 1. Magic's Pawn, 2. Magic's Promise, 3. Magic's Price, 4. Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein 5. The Talisman by Stephen King 6. If I Pay Thee Not in Gold 7. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice 8. Book of Shadows (my own) 9. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne 10. Blood Price by Tanya Huff (it's what I'm reading at the moment) Speaking of Tanya Huff, has anyone out there read any of her stuff that they really enjoyed ? I like this one pretty well so far. It's got some interesting twists to it. I'm also reading Horse Fantastic and another called Amberleaf Faire. If anyone is interested in writing me via snail mail, my address is P.O. Box 531, Odenton, MD 21113-0531. Thanks for your time!!!! THE KEYBOARD IS HANDED OVER; HI from Arielle! I'm a few days behind on the mail, but am trying to catch up! I noticed everyone was talking about trysting feathers a few days ago and I wanted to add that something strikingly similar can be made really easily from inexpensive materials found in most craft stores (in the U.S. at least). I like being able to custom make my own designs. Just food for thought. If anyone wants more details, you can e- mail me privately. THE KEYBOARD IS YET AGAIN HANDED OVER. Hey, Mat...Hit me with your best shot!!!! I'm harder to offend than you might think. (I forget what that form is called...). You are thinking of the native Japanese syllabic writing system: kana. There are two forms of this: hiragana, which is used for Japanese words; and katakana, which is used for foreign words and graphics. Actually, "native" is not the best term for kana. Both forms of kana (hira- and kata-) were derived from classical Chinese. However, they were developped in Japan, for the use of the Japanese, and therefor are usually considered "native." > BTW, those words ARE Chinese. According to my dad, who has a > fascination with Chinese history, long, long ago, an emporer (sp?) from > Japan sent a ship of scholars to China to learn the language. The "chinese" writing used in Japan is called "Kanji" and is based on the writing system "hanzi" used in China. However, the pronunciation is completely different in most cases. For example, the character for person is pronounced "ren" in Modern Mandarin and is pronounced as "jin" or "hito" in Japanese (both pronunciations are used depending on the meaning and context). Vivian, your dad isn't the only one with a fascination for Chinese history. The Japanese court had a very strange relationship with China for centuries. I don't know about sending scholars to China (as an official deputation), but much of Chinese literature and art was funneled into Japan via Korea. The Japanese court adapted these art forms and turned them into uniquely Japanese arts. May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences.
