I may be wrong but I think that binding and printing are two different things. I mean they print newspapers but they don't bind them. On you the other hand you can have magazines bound (like at the library) after you recieve them(but it costs a bundle.) So it seems that you could take hand written/copied pages and bind them into a book even if you had never seen a printing press. I think. Since when has death had anything to do with the night? I get really tired when people claim that there is something particularly deadly about the night. Death comes at any time and night encompasses the living, the dead, and the dreamers, so I wouldn't claim that being the spirit of death cuts any ice with the Goddess of the Night. BTW, for the elucidation of the list, here is a prayer to Ratri, the Goddess of the Night: Guard us from the wolf, And from the she-wolf, And guard us from the thief, O Night, And so, be good for us to pass. I say this prayer whenever I go out at night. Another quote about her that I have always loved is: The Goddess has filled wide space, to its heighth and breadth, and her radiance drives forth the dark. Anyway, I just thought y'all might like to know these, and I felt I should quash Shadow-lover before he gets too megalomaniacal (that seems to be one of my jobs these days *grin*). Shadow, if you want to be the spirit of death, that is fine with me. But you will just have to be satisfied with that and leave the Night alone. Regarding the Japanese/Chinese business, I'll try to explain. I've learnt both Chinese and Japanese. There are 3 forms of words in Japanese: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Hiragana is the pronunciation of everything in Japanese and you can write _everything_ in Hiragana. Katakana is mostly used for names of things and people. Kanji is the part which is comprised of Chinese look-alike words. Some of the Chinese words have been adapted for Japanese and they are all pronounced differently from Chinese. It is impossible to write completely in Katakana or Kanji because the things like conjunctions, prepositions etc. are all in Hiragana. Therefore, if you know Chinese, you won;t be able to read Japanese, and vice versa. Oh, I forgot. Even Hiragana and Katakana are greatly simplified Chinese words. Sortof. I think I got that right. If I made a mess of it, do let me know. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kinda. Depends on which Japanese you learn. The "regular" form of written Japanese (by "regular" I mean the from that I've seen on Japanese products/texts, the form most frequently used in Japan) is different from Chinese. (I forget what that form is called...). A Chinese person would not be able to read that form of Japanese (unless of course, he/she just happened to also know it). However, yes, it IS true that a Chinese person may be able to communicate with a Japanese person since the Japanese person would have probably learned BOTH "forms" of the language (Actually, I think there may even be three forms..). BTW, those words ARE Chinese. According to my dad, who has a fascination with Chinese history, long, long ago, an emporer (sp?) from Japan sent a ship of scholars to China to learn the language. Of course, it also depends on which from of Chinese you are referring to too :) (if you are taught the long form of Chinese, then, no problem... Reading Chinese in the short-form may be a little more tedious. One can't always derive the correct word, in my limited experience...) My .02: There are three forms of writing used in the Japanese culture: , which is comprised of the pictograms brought over from Chinese; , which is the "expansion set" of characters used to apply some grammar and punctuation to the kanji, and even to replace kanji for the newspapers and everyday writing; and , which is another expansion set used for dealing with "non-Japanese" terminology. Hiragana and Katakana are syllable-based forms, and therefore are a lot more flexible for coining new terms or importing them from other languages. Kanji is used for more "traditional" forms, and, IIRC, for formal declarations and announcements and prayers. There's over 3,000 kanji that I know of, and I think there's only 40 or 50 max to the other two forms apiece; that alone would make it easier to use the simpler forms for mechanical printing and computer encoding. ObMisty: I think there were pictograms mentioned in connection with the Shin'a'nin, but what about a system of writing? What kind of alphabets are in use in the Empire, Karse, Rethwellan, Valdemar, etc.? What about linguistic differences between the k'Leysha and the rest of the Clans when the sundered gated back into the main picture? Not ObMisty exactly, but close: How was the DragonCon? You know, I would *love* to see a quality comic book of any of Misty's stuff, perhaps something along the lines of the artwork in _Ghost_ from Dark Horse (now *there's* a proto-Herald--she has psionic powers, and she wears all white--'course, she's dead . . . ). The comic _Blood and Roses_ has always reminded me of Tarma and Kethry anyway, right down to the physical resemblance. --Herald Rythkana, who's actually made roughs for her art project!! aka.. Sorry for that one, but it wasn't my fault, actually. I don't have a special liking for 20s and A7s, at least not that I know of! I don't know how the =20 got into the message, and the =A7s were supposed to be the paragraph sign (on the same key as the 3, on my keyboard). Hmm. So far, no one has shown me textevd that Vkandis's consort WAS named Kalendra, for all we know, one of Need's Twin Gods might have been Vkandis's Consort, and I've stated before that maybe Need lived near the PROTO-Kaled'a'in. Or wherever you put the apostrophes. Come to think of it, Need came from a SISTERHOOD which had other Temples in other places, which was where Need wanted to take the girls. So gods only know where THAT religion started. Until I get textevd, or Misty herself states otherwise, I refuse to believe Vkandis and the Star-Eyed were a couple, I seem to recall that the Kaled'a'in believed that they had been BEFORE Karse, which doesn't seem to have as much of a history as the people who had been alive during the MAGE WARS, and considered Valdemar and Karse as "barbarians". I believe Kal'e'nal came FIRST, and so, therefore, was pre-Vkandis, anyhow.
