Now I know this was a typo, but I kinda like the idea of a gurdge - a sort of fuzzy grudge? I still maintain that there would have been those that couldn't save their necks by fighting. Take Teren, (I think) - wasn't he chosen when he was mid-twenties, married with kids? Well, train all you like, but the instinctive skills Eslpeth and Skif had, by virtue of learning when still essentially children, would never really come. =============================================================================== Debbie - sorry to hear about the fire. My parents had one a few years back, and it shook them rigid (and put my Dad into hospital overnight - he tried to be heroic and get to the fire extinuisher. He got a lung full instead.) Replacing a lost collection - whoof, now there's a problem. I hate to buy books I've read, it's why I'll never borrow something that I think I'll want. I borrowed Patricia McKilip's Riddle master of Hed trilogy (excellent - I recommend), and took years to finally getting round to buying my own - I kept borrowing from the original lender 'til she got fed up! But, what would I target in the first rush - probably what many of us would, given the recommendations that crop up here - Lackey - all Valdemar, I can live without the rest McCaffrey - all but Dolphins McKinley - all McKilip - all Sheri Tepper - The Land of the True Game books, incl. the Jinian Series Mary Herbert - the Hunnli trilogy Tanya Huff - all Frank Herbert - Dune (the first 3 only, and The Dosadi whatsit) Jennifer Robinson - Del and Tiger series, The Cheysuli I can do without Robert Jordan - all so far written C Cheryth - the Morgaine(?) books, Rimrunners, Faded Sun (I think it's hers - read it years back, and thought I'd want to re-read someday. Haven't yet, so can't recall why I liked it!)) Weiss/Hickman - Dragons of Autumn/Winter/Spring thingies and The Twins books Eddings - Belgariad/Mallorean Can't remember - The Witches of Karres - bought it on spec years ago, never seen anything else by the guy, and it's fun! There's got to be more. It's all those 'one-offs' you pick up, by people with one book in them, or their first is great and the rest c**p. It makes you think (well me, anyway) - maybe I ought to catalogue them, I haven't got 3000, but way more than I can remember, and I'm forever thinking "Haven't read XXXXXX in ages". =============================================================================== re: the new Misty song parody - eerm, sorry about this, but what is the song it's based on? My .02: I didn't see this article, but it's practically identical to what my mother has said to me...She was raised as Depression-Era New-England Italian Roman Catholic; I knew the Latin of the Mass better than my brothers the altarboys did. I ~really~ wanted to function as a priest, but girls couldn't do that, so I was actually going through the catalogues the nuns had on the various orders of sisters...Mom and Dad convinced me to live for a while in the real world before deciding to enter a convent. Turned out that I didn't have a real vocation to be a nun, after all. Only my parents and my older older brother know I'm not a Christian anymore; it's interesting - ~none~ of my siblings have remained Catholic, although half of them have remained Christian. ObMisty: Valdemar is ~definitely~ a place where there is religious freedom, and I wish I was living there! I'm glad someone found the textevd on the Twins (me-+AT+-work, books-+AT+-home), and I think there's a link between the Twins and the Karsite religion - remember that when the Aryan migration came boiling up out of the Indian sub-continent, one of the things the conquerers did was have their male deities marry the local goddesses, in order to legitimize the sociopolitical takeover. Vkandis is probably an import, with Kalenel being the resident that got married, and then 'lost'. Only ~She~ took off - which may be the ultimate source of the nomadic clans; either people who refused to be conquered, or rebels who took their religion with them. Whaddeya think, gang? I think as long as Staven was alive, 'Lendel would have no real interest and no real inclinations to suicide. As long as he still had his twin, whatever depression/suicidal tendancies he had would be held in check. I dont think Savil was surprised that 'Lendel suicided after Staven died. Maybe I was reading too much into it, but I got the impression that 'Lendel depended on his twin very heavily. When Staven died, 'Lendel's bond with Van was still too new to be able to replace the one with his twin. > Sorry no textevd this time. (My apologies Cennydd!!) Um, don't jump on me about this please--I'm only just now resurfacing, having avoided the Bible discussion (Been there, done that!). But there is a *tiny tiny* point to the person's remark about Wiccanism not being a totally valid religion--the person in question probably didn't mean it this way, but the fact is that a great deal of the people representing Wiccanism and other "alternative belief systems" (what a stinky concept) are just putting together stuff they've read into their own idea of a religion. It's just as harmful as the "senseis" who claim to have a new martial art, when it's really just moves they've patched together from martial arts videotapes. ANd of course if he meant *established* religion, I guess I couldn't argue with that (although, you could argue that Wiccanism is a lot older, and therefore much more established). (What's so great about being a valid -religion- anyway???) The fact is, Wiccanism and *any* belief system that someone truly believes in *is* valid, no matter what. It doesn't take a pope and a hierarchy to make a religion--in fact, my parents are Mormon (I'm not), and the LDS church's stated goal is to reach a day when people are spiritual enough they don't have to go to church or be official members of a religion. I'm not jumping on you, but I have to disagree with you. Eclectic witches do do this. But that just means that they don't follow a SPECIFIC tradition--they just take what works best from various systems. Then again, we have this with some of the 'mainstream' religions, also. Eclectic Catholics. Who take pieces of what they can use out of their own religion and ignore the rest. If a Catholic disagrees with a religious idea of the Church, and takes only parts of what the whole dogma is, then they're progressive. If they want to change the Church's teachings, they're progressive. But if Wiccans want to pick and choose, then the religion is invalid. I don't understand. Then again, later in the same message, she wrote: >The fact is, Wiccanism and *any* belief system that someone truly believes >in *is* valid, no matter what. Which kind of invalidates the above quote anyway. Stars Bright Thy Path (and Forever Guide Thee True...) We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jun 1996 13:53:41 -0600 (CST) From: MO9605-+AT+-DSCC.CC.TN.US To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Help: Misty release info Message-ID: <01I6BTFJGNFM0034G7-+AT+-DSCC.CC.TN.US> Prison of Souls is a Bards Tale book... I've got it... It's about ... grrr... I can't remember the younger Bard's name and Naitachal. They travel to a place where all magic is outlawed unless you have a liscense. and both of them end up getting into trouble for being bard's and Naitachal a Necromancer. It's a VERY good book...
