And the list is what, three years old? I don't think that that's even the earliest reference... I can vaguely recall that OATHBLINDED has been a red herring ever since OATHBREAKERS came out, because no one could believe Misty would release a duology. Misty's released how many Velgarth books since then? I say it's a hoax until someone can give me definitive proof otherwise. But I digress. Someone IS going to ask me for this, so here goes. This is the first top ten list I did, back in February of this year. Becky put up.> =================================================================== The Top Ten Ways You Can Tell You Read Too Much Mercedes Lackey =================================================================== 10. You sit around wondering how well Vanyel can do against other fantasy sorcerers. YOU: "Now, Vanyel against Belgarath..." NORMAL MISTY FAN: "What are you talking about?" 9. You look for a way to tie *all* of Misty's books together. YOU: "So, if we look at Diana Tregarde, and we look at the way *she* does magic, it's the same as when Vanyel..." NORMAL MISTY FAN: 8. You bought a white horse of your very own. YOU: "And this is my companion, Bella." 7. Your credit card bill at Firebird Arts & Music is more than your tuition; you have a standing order there for *every* new Misty work that comes out; and they know you there by name. YOU: "Hello, Firebird?" TELEPHONE: "Oh! Hi Jake! How are you? Your $200 order is coming in the mail soon, and we've placed a pre-order for the third book in the Vows and Honor Trilogy for you." 6. You slavered over the thought that there *might* be a third book in the Vows & Honor series. (There isn't). INTERNET RUMOR PERSON: "So, the third book is called "Oathblinded." YOU: "Really? Really? Really?" 5. Your friends never let you bring music to parties because you only bring filk, and you always *insist* that they play all of _Shadow Stalker_. YOU: "Man, Heather Alexander's voice is like gold!" YOUR NORMAL FRIEND: "Who in the world is Heather Alexander?" 4. Not only that, but you *liked* "Herald's Creed." YOU: "I mean, it's so majestic." NORMAL MISTY FAN: "Oh, please." 3. You are fluent in Shin'a'in, Tayledaras, and the Hawkbrother tongues, and use these words in daily conversation. YOU: "Heyla, Boss!" YOUR BOSS: "Heyla? What are you talking about?" 2. You go berserk over the correct pronunciation of Vanyel's name. YOU: "VAHN-yel? No! It's van-YEL!" 1. You sit around writing lists like this one. Just for the record, I found out that Terry at Firebird often does recognize me by voice, I have thought about buying a horse (it would make it so much EASIER to travel around New York!), I've said Heyla by accident to non-fen (did it Friday by accident: said to my friend Pete, "Heyla, Pete!" and he stared at me), I've agonized over the right pronunciation of Van's name, I love Heather "I can read the phone book and still make Jake swoon over with pleasure" Alexander's music, and I've tried the Unified Misty Theory. And, of course, I wrote the list. But I would **NEVER** like Herald's Creed! Stars Bright Thy Path (and Forever Guide Thee True...) This is not > religion we're dealing with here... It's Misty... Let me elucidate: Actually, your textevd is very nice but a) not germane to the issue and b) does not prove your point anyway. For (a): The issue is not what the character "Shadow-lover" may or not be in Misty's secondary world of Velgarth. The issue is what the persona of "Shadow-Lover" may or may not be on the list. Arguably, this list is a textually constructed reality distinct from Velgarth. As for (b): Nowhere in the text that you quoted did it state that Shadow-Lover was the *lord* of things nocturnal or even of shadows. All the text says is that Shadow-Lover is a creature that lives in dreams and is only see at night. Sounds more like a denizen (or even a prisoner) than a lord. For that matter, the imagery of the text suggests that Shadow-Lover can't be the True Death. Rather, The Shadow-Lover seems to be the personification of a longed-for death or suicide in a dream. > I never claimed power over things nocturnal, just the shadows and > *certain* dreams... Ummmm. I am agnostic and do not believe in the "supernatural." I find that "natural" is super enough. I generally do not accept anything for which there is no empirical evidence. To be perfectly honest, I am the ultimate sceptic. I don't "believe" in anything, regardless of the evidence. At best, I accept certainly empirically supported claims as working hypotheses. So, anyway, until someone can offer up good evidence empirical evidence for the existence of the "Otherworld," I do not propose to go around believing in it *(pterry ref). > *Shadow-Lover then gives an indignant snort towards Cennydd and returns > to his shadows, satisfied...* :Megalomaniac... Actually I'd always interpreted the "Shadow-Lover" song such that the SL -was- the true death, that lead one to the Havens, or wherever may be appropriate. Certainly it fits with all the references to the SL in the LHM. I agree that the song centres around a longed-for death, though I would have said that it relates to a longed-for release from loneliness and unhappiness, through the gift of the Shadow-Lover. But that's interpretation really. > No. What made you think that I would? I am agnostic and do not believe > in the "supernatural." I find that "natural" is super enough. I'm confused. Last time I checked, twilight is that time of day when the sun has gone down, and it's shadowy, but not yet DARK. Shadows can only appear with light to make them, shading things, mist comes from tiny water-droplets condensing, and so far, none of this is NIGHT. Oh, and "Never seen by day" only means sleep, IMO, because if you appear in dreams, you must be either a)sleeping, b)hallucinating in some way, i.e. coma, drugs, or vision quest, not to mention insanity, or c)daydreaming. Personally, I took that line "In your arms I shall not fear the night" to mean "I'm dead, what's gonna hurt me now?" Of course, I'm being prosaic. I've been reading Harlan Ellison's non-fiction essays for two days straight, I'm feeling belligerent, short, aggressive, and occasionally mean, I apologize to anyone on this list whose feelings I might have trampled. It >was by a Christian priest (I dunno what division) about Wicca...The one phrase >I remember was him saying something about "I believe in the freedom of >religion. I just don't believe that this is a valid religion." A few months ago a Wiccan was invited to give an invocation at a city council meeting. The meeting was attended by a larger than normal crowd who loudly protested the Wiccan's participation. The councilwoman who invited the Wiccan was either forced to resign or was so embarassed over the behaviour of her fellow citizens that she resigned. (Sorry, it's been a while & I don't remember the details). You know, I really don't get it. Those 'good Christians' seemed to forget that God loves all, and that in the USA we are allowed - no, scratch that - have the right to believe as we will. Persecution does NOT belong here! I consider myself a Christian, but am losing faith in established religion (or maybe just some of them). The God I believe in loves us all..doesn't matter where you live, what you look like, what kind of car you drive, what church, temple or mosque you go to. Everyone! Sorry folks, don't mean to be so melancholy....I just don't get it. Seranna ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jun 1996 23:09:40 -0500 From: "Clarissa C. I'm not doing the major post right now, I'm still trying to work out a suitably long ceremony, henceforth to be known as The Roll Call of the God(esse)s. I'm constructing my list of deities, but if anyone has such a list, PRETTY PLEASE, SEND IT TO ME, I think I'm missing a few of the already Named. Lady Becky, keep Goddess of Stress, once taken away, it's free to be claimed by someone else. If you wish to give it up for good, let me know, then it can float to the next to-be-Named deity.
