Now, certainly, I don't think anyone here is going to argue > that Wicca is not a religion. However, there is a lot of mishmash going > by the name of witchcraft, and I would certainly have to say that it is > not a valid *religion*. First of all, many pagans practice some form of magick (if only in their rituals), this is most often associated with witchcraft due to the way it works with nature. (In Jinx High Di describes the difference between Witchcraft and Sorcery. Actually this is a rather apt description). The point is that since many of the old pagan rituals (And thus the *New* rituals that they're based off of) were based in that type of magick (Druidism, Shamanism, Witchcraft, etc). The most commonly used term for this type of magick is, unfortunately, witchcraft. As to it being a valid religion, I would have to say that you're wrong. There are more than a few covens around who follow a similar faith system as the Wiccans, but who don't follow that faith. (Lady Jaguar, and Sundancer for example.) That doesn't make their religion any less valid, but it does point out that *witches* can exist without wicca. It's the way the rituals are performed. > Note: I don't say it is an invalid faith, merely that it is an invalid > religion. Let's not confuse the two things. Faith is a the beliefs a > person has and the system into which they are arranged. Religion is a > community of faith which is united by and characterized by a common set > of customs and behaviors. So what makes a community? 2 people? 3? Or maybe 12? That's a fairly weak argument, it depends on where you draw the line for what makes a community. > The idea of "common" customs and behaviors is a very important one in > religions like Wicca. The customs and behaviors of a Wiccan should > conform to the greater community of faith, whether they are a solitary > practitioner or not. I will give you this. In order to claim to be a member of the faith you should conform to the *general acceptable practices*. For example the Wiccan Rede, "An ye harm none, do an ye will". Is a central idea in that religion. But practices and rituals, and even some beliefs differ between different covens. > > But if Wiccans want to pick and choose, then the religion is invalid. The same is not true for your eclectic > solitary "witch." I'm sorry Cennydd... I still can't accept that a person doesn't have a vaild religion if they're not affiliated with a group. I happen to be one of those eclectic solitaries you mentioned. I don't claim to be a witch, or follow witchcraft or wicca. But since I'm a solitary, does that mean that my religion is invald? BTW, I use the term "pagan" when people ask what religion I belong to, it covers a broad spectrum of belief systems, including wicca, and Buddhism(sp?) as well as many others. It saves people who pay by file size, or who have to print out digests getting snowed under with repetitions. It also stops things getting boring. A'right? Clear now? ObMisty: Good grief, 2 in one day. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerm, ...., well, it'll do. I was always surprised that Griffon (?) with his fire starting abilities did not end up being one of the mage gifted heralds - it was a talent considered rare - people talked of Lavan, and was a very physical, magical demonstration of his mind power. Also, (I'm on a roll here) there's no mention in either of the latest two books (whatever the devil they're called - y'know, the Karal ones) of emerging mage talents among heralds. You'd think that Elspeth was still the one with any. You'd think there'd be a few latents out there awaiting their 4 footed call-up. tot ziens, Esmeralda Evensbane ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 1996 08:35:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Gyrfalcon To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: list member casting Message-ID: On Wed, 26 Jun 1996, Tensen wrote: > On Fri, 21 Jun 1996, Gyrfalcon wrote: > > > I have an alter-ego?
