Ever since I was a little girl, I had trouble going to sleep. I would smuggle a flashlight & book under the covers and read into the wee hours of the night. I'm even worse now. My mind is super alert starting at 7 pm, lasting till to 3 or 4 am. Unfortunately, I work an 8:00-5:00 job, so I am often tired in the morning. Even if I go to bed early, I still won't fall asleep quickly. I sometimes wish I didn't have to sleep....think of how much more I could get done! What's really interesting, is watching my 5 year old go through the same thing. I can't get him asleep before 10:30 (with or without an afternoon nap), and he wakes up as grumpy as I do in the morning. He is definitely a night owl. Unfortunately, my husband is an early bird, which doesn't make life easy. But I like mornings too, that is, I like staying up till morning & watch the sun come up...listen to the birds chirp...hear the rumble of vehicles going down the highway.... What is to fear from death? Pain, yes; but not death. I have always thought that death is the end of pain, sorrow, etc. It is the release from the world. In my personal fantasy venue (Caen), the god of death is known as the "Most Kind" because he was the one that brought the gift of release to the world. Up until he gave the world the gift of mortality there was no escape from pain or suffering. In his spirit, Korvin took pity on the creatures of the world and brought them two gifts. His first gift was the gift of healing, so that the wounded and injured could make themselves whole again. The second gift was the gift of death, the gate through which the spirit could escape its tormented flesh when healing was no longer an option. Anyway, I sort of see death like that in real life too. I recently had my grandfather and step-grandmother die and I can only say that I am glad that they had that option. They were old and feeble and unable to care for themselves. The family was forced (much against our will) to put them in a care facility, since they both required constant nursing. My grandfather, who had always been a proud man, had always hated the idea of being confined and helpless. The night that he was admitted, he died. He didn't kill himself, or anything, but he just let go of life. I was always glad that he had that option. That there was some way for him to escape the prison of his body and situation. Hmmmm. While death doesn't frighten me, I must admit that the idea of growing old and becoming feeble does. I am particularly frightened at the idea of losing my ability to remember things or to think clearly. And the idea of feeling my body turn into a prison that does not answer to my commands is a very frightening prospect. Speaking of which: Reference Contest: "What have you done to me? I can feel this body dying all around me!" (worth 10 pts.) Ok, having said all that, I also have to say that I am not looking forward to death, either. I like being alive and I love the things I can experience here. I guess there are two quotes that sum it all up for me. The first is the classic Dylan Thomas: "Do not go gently into that good night/Rage, rage, against the dying of the light." The other one is one that I can only remember the basic scansion and gist of, but not the exact adverb: "Gladly did I live, and gladly die, and I lay me down with a will." I think that, if in the end of my life I can say that last quote and mean it, I will count my life to have been a good one. May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences. On page 222, the very first paragraph: > "I have seen gryphons listed in the Writ, among other creatures that > Vkandis is said to love-sunhawks, snowhorns, scaled ones." > I would assume that scaled ones were dragons, albeit good ones. I always assumed that the scaled ones were the Hertasi. Makes sense doesn't it? This line is a one-liner prevention device. --Gyr =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 1996 15:06:17 -0400 From: David Snyder To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: GM/Texas/death by Fetch Message-ID: <199606291906.PAA13057-+AT+-brickell.bridge.net> At 04:04 AM 6/29/96 +0100, you wrote: >Has anybody else seen a news article about the Texas GOP's new policy plank? >I don't want to freak out til I get a little more info, but the short >article I read said they wanted to prohibit abortion in ANY case, including >rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother; to legalize discrimination >against homosexual people; and several other things that sounded too extreme >to believe. If you play GURPS, and want a copy, just send a SASE, and you'll get what I have. As far as the TX GOP goes, I say that they are mostly men, and no offense to the men on the list, but it's a woman's body, and a woman's choice, and when men get pregnant, they can have a say in the matter, but only as far as their own bodies. To anyone on the list who thinks abortion is murder, I apologize for the belligerent tone in my voice, but I say that if you don't like it, don't do it, and don't try to save my soul if you think I'm murdering someone, or come have the baby for me, raise it and it'll be your kid. Can you tell it's a touch subject for me? There are too many pro-lifers where I am, and I'm extremely pro-choice. Weird thought about Fetching--could you perform an abortion by Fetching? She said her ankle hurt waaaaaaaay more than the thigh did and that the long lines hurt the most. I want to get one on my ankle but I'm not sure what I want yet. I would've gotten one when I went with my mom but the guy said his policy was that you had to be 18 years or older. (I'm 14) Other places just need to have parent permission. My mom approves (surprised the hell out of me) so I guess I'll just have to decide what I want. It's a big decision (it will last your whole life) so I'll think about it a long time.
