I hereby admit that this is off topic. I am respectfully asking (forgive me Auntie Mel if I am out of line here) for prayers and good wishes for my husband, Paul. He goes into the hospital in 6 hours for back surgery and it may be pretty bad. I'm hoping it won't obviously, but it can't hurt to hedge the bets with some prayers and good wishes sent his way. He is usually the one who downloads my messages from the list and has gotten really interested in Misty. Who knows, I may even be able to get him to read one of the books since he will be bedbound and at my mercy for awhile. I figure if every there was a group with strong characters and "good vibes" this is it, and your good wishes will probably do much much good. The last book I read, Burning Water, has a lot of ritual murder in it, used for raising power. I was wondering, during the investigation of the Jack the Ripper murders, did the police ever look into the possibility that the murders could have been some sort of ritual? Sorry to be so morbid. I'm not usually interested in violent crime, but the Ripper murders have always bugged me because he was never identified. They have lots of Misty filk and other really unique Misty related items. They're prices are fair and the service is very friendly and helpful, though the delivery can be slow sometimes from my personal experience. Hey Jake, I'm a measly newbie and I've seen this question asked by greener newbies and answered more than once in the past month or so I've been part of this happy little disfunctional family. Do you think this should be part of the Misty related FAQ somewhere, or are you only addressing questions more specificly Misty-ish pertaining to her writings? Dass inquired: >Ok, I was just sitting down to order this CD (among others) from >Firebird, and I noticed: "Oathbreakers CD Pre-order $15.00". (and seeing >as this was one of the CDs I was going to order) I have to ask.. >"Pre-order"? Of what are they refering to? For items that are "works in progress" to be released in the future, Firebird accepts pre-orders. Since these are items that have not been released for sale yet, you can expect them to take longer than the normal 6 or 8 weeks to get to you. Basically if you pre-order something from them, they will send it to you hot off the press as soon as it is available to the public for sale, whenever that happens to be. Someone was inquiring about which Misty tapes members of the list would recommend. Now I only have 5 different Misty tapes, but Mercedes Lackey....LIVE! is my personal favorite. I'm beginning to realise I am very alone in that sentiment though... I like the humor in it, which the other tapes I have of hers lack for the most part. I also like the fact that she sings the songs, not another vocalist. Are there any other Misty tapes with a fair number of humorous songs on them??? Shadow Stalker is pretty good too. I know you have to write Misty to get her permission to do this project though. It may even require communication between you and she now and then for permission on additions when updating and things of that sort. Misty seems to be kind of reclusive at the moment; perhaps even cynical when it comes to fan relations. At least that's the impression I get. I'm sceptical as to wether she would even want anything to do with authorizing a fan maintained page. I sincerely hope I'm mistaken on this one though. I'd love to see her prove me wrong and have another Misty page on the web. Forgive me please you guys; this is one of those rare moments that what little pestimest there is within me is showing. I'm getting discouraged here ...(snipsnap) OK, OK, I think it's a great idea, IF you really have the time to do it. I spent time a while back surfin' round, and there's an awful lot of tired, abandoned pages out there. I think this sort of thing can be an awful lot of work, but, hey if you're willin' ("Barkis is willing" is a quote from who and where?) then go for it. I'm not in ML mode at the moment, got a GGK awaiting me, but if you get going I'll browse for some quotes. If you found Lions sad, and reeeeallly want to wallow, go for Tigana next, as I've said before on this list, and will no doubt say again, it has some heart stopping bits, and gets sadder with each re-read. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- There's been a lot of requests for abbreviations lately - I'll try to get the current ones together and send it to Rynath for the FAQ he's volunteered to do. Yeah! Weell, how's about worst? The early bits of book 1 where Talia is on route to whatever it's called - Haven??? with Rolan, and they stop off at some waystation. There's a real kiddie book scene, which ends with her "snuggling into her bed of sweet grass" or some such icky, yicky statement. I nearly gave up at that point - thought I'd got a kids' book by mistake, I persevered, luckily for me, and ML cranked up the age range she was aiming for (about 12 in early book 1, adolescents by the end, and grown-ups by the end of book 3) - IMHO, IMHO, IMHO - don't get shirty if you're 10, and thought it was all wonderful. I'm not, and at twenty whatever-I was when these first appeared, book 1 struck me as a bit juevenile. 'kay, that'll do. IIRC, in AFall (I think, could be BTS), after Daren identifies the mage who's controlling the Hardornens, one of the mages with Quentin fetches a knife and uses it to kill that mage. I am at the office right now, so I can't look it up (books-+AT+-home, of course). My .02: My understanding is that Fetching is teleportation, and IMHO, teleportation is _blessed_ hard to ward against, because it doesn't send mass line-of-sight _through_ space, so much as bend/fold-space so that source/destination _touches_ and then punch the mass through the contact point. The effort comes from the bend/fold and then the punch. Magical shields are usually perceptualized (wow - weird new word!) as being a "layered" construct, which a 'port can go right past, rather than as a permeating field, which could 'capture' a 'ported object and bounce it right back at the sender. I know that in Arrows' Fall, one of Ancar's mages makes a comment about the mages not being able to read Heralds' minds. This might simply be a case of the mages' telepathy not being on the right 'frequency' to receive sendings from Heralds and/or their Companions. As I understand it, Mind-gifts and Magic both manipulate matter/energy, but work at different frequencies to do so. 'Mage-Gift' may simply be recognition of being able to reach other sources of energy to tap for the manipulations - Heralds use the Web, Mages can tap the ley lines and nodes. > On Mon, 1 Jul 1996, I wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Hello to Megan!!! >>>I _like_ your name! This has of course generated a lot of debate both here and OS with many people presenting valid views from both sides. The gist is that you have to have a couple of medical opinions as to your incurable and painful state before getting the go ahead. As for myself, suicide has not been an option for me, not that I'm implying that thinking about it means you are considering it as an option. However, to contribute, a science teacher recounted a story where he had fallen foul accidentally (something to do with his work) of carbon monoxide and had not realised before he fell asleep, only to be woken later and told that he almost died. What am I going to do about clothing? And where's my black hair dye?* (Van, p55) 9: He opened up a hatch in the bottom of the crowded wagon and began pulling out instruments packed in beautifully wrought travelling bags. Two lutes, a harp- -and three instrunents vaguely gittern-shaped, but-- larger. But the electric guitar is what caught Van's eye the most. "Cool, man!" he said. (Van and Rolf, p113) 8: "Herald Vanyel? The Shadow-" "Stalker, Demonsbane, the Hero of Stony Tor, also known as Bippy the Mime in my spare time, yes." (Van and Rolf, p113) 7: "Why me?" he damanded. "Why am *I* suddenly the arbitrator?" Savil flourished a piece of paper. "Because according to this little piece of paper I have, under Randale's *official* seal, you understand the problems, so you're appointed full and final authority. Put that on your Companion and ride it, pal." (Van and Savil, p314) 6: "I'm ordering you to *let this boy be.* Who in hell are you?" "My name is Bond... James Bond." (Van and Lores, p149) 5: "Maybe you should stop. Become a bricklayer, for instance." "Jaysen, I know it's been damned long, but bricks? It would be hard to cut a hole big enough in them." (Van and Jaysen, p35) 4: "We lost Jays," he whispered, remembering, feeling the emptiness. "Well, where did you last leave him?" (Van and Tantras, p309) 3: "Vanyel," she said softly. "You and me--there's no hope, is there?" "Bright Lady! Haven't you figured it out yet? I'm saych. Say'a'chern! I'll spell it out for you.. S-A-Y- apostrophe-A-apostrophe-C-H-E-R-N!!!! That means, no!" (Van and Melenna, p312) 2: Vanyel had a headache coming on. "Actually, no, inkeeper. The truth is I've been on iron rations so long hat anything rich would likely have made me ill. But I could go for a chocolate chip cookie or two." (Van and the inkeeper, p68) And the number one changed line from _Magic's Promise_ : 1: "She's *not*," he repeated for the hundreth time, "a horse!" "Yes she is!" "No she isn't!" "Is!" "Isn't!" "Is..." (Van and Withen, p81) All page numbers are from the US paperback release of _Magic's Promise._ Stars Bright Thy Path (And Forever Guide Thee True): Jake . I always get weepy and choked up because in my family it's contangious- one person starts and everyone else follows. I know this sounds out and out terrible, but I cried harder when my cat died and when 12 of my fish were lost to disease than when my grandfather died. (Yes, I cried over fish. I'd had each of them for at least 3 years, and the ---- epidemic spread throughout the tank in a night. Everything was fine, three were dead the next morning. Bought expensive fish medicine, only one died. The disease came back the next day. All the fish got ragged fins and I lost five. I tried the medicine again. Saved some. Disease came back, lost 3. I finally scrubbed out each plant, the gravel, the filter, and set in a whole raft of medicines in succession. That worked). And its something about me and cats- always get along. I have never met a cat that (with some work) wouldn't trust me. Honestly. (except for one named Nutmeg, but she's literally insane- runs around the house chasing dustbunnies and then hides in the rafters of the basement). It always had the sound of the grey Irish sea and the greens and roses of heather on the moors in it for me. Darn. Everything else has gone out of my head.
