The males help, especially the younger ones that haven't been chased off yet. True, the lionesses do more hunting, but not all of it. My reply: ~Not~ to sound nasty, Windshadow, but I didn't know that the male lions did any leading in the prides. My impression, and this is garnered from several shows on The Learning Channel on cable, is that the females form the core of the pride, and that, while the males may battle for the privelege of mating with the females and will try to kill off any rival's cubs, it's the females who decide which males will be tolerated by the pride as a whole. Am I totally in left field on this? Also: re Horses and whiskers: I thought horses used their muzzle whiskers (don't know if this is correct verbiage here, sorry) to locate things in front of their mouths, since their eyes are placed in such a way that they literally cannot see beyond the end of their noses(!). Dumb question time: Do horses always have such soft lips? When a horse is described as having a hard mouth, or an iron mouth, is this something that usually comes about because of poor training? Frankly, I'd rather train my horses than break them, and use a hackamore whenever hand/leg/voice signals aren't enough. (Granted, I don't really own any horses, and don't want to step on any toes here, but was thinking along the lines of 'what I would like if I were a horse being raised to work with humans.') ObMisty: I ~very much~ like the Shin'a'nin attitude toward their horses. To have horses that well-trained, however, don't you practically have to begin the training at birth? And how do you ~know~ that someone you're selling a horse to will treat the animal with decent courtesy and care? What do the Shin'a'nin do if the beasts are ~not~ well-treated by their new masters? ... I ~think~ I may have figured out the MistyDifference between battlesteeds and regular horses - battlesteeds are trained as to their riders and are treated as such, where most horses have a master-servant position foisted off on them. Companions have the partner relationship too, but don't need any training to achieve it. Since Companions are reincarnated Heralds, how do they handle the shock of waking up in a foal's body, and how developed is the foal's brain to handle that consciousness? Do the Companions not Choose before they're 8-10 years old (Sorry, Cennydd, no textevd, just general impression from stories - any corrections will be welcomed) because the brain isn't mature enough until then for full manifestation/integration of the erstwhile Herald's personality? I wanted to get the feel of the list before i hopped right in and introduced myself. I've enjoyed Misty for years and have re read everything at least 3 or 4 times so this has been really interesting. Some of you all remember the smallest details!! I've noticed no one has messaged about any of Misty's other works.... anyone out there who reads *everything*, not just Velgarth? Got to go right now, my great dane needs me... For instance, my last name, Williamson, seems like a pretty normal name. However, it's welsh for "the son of a brave warrior". Pretty neat huh? Check your local library and you might find your name is more than you thought! BTW, my great dane's name is Ophelia. >ObMisty: Wasn't there something in the Magic's Promise about Tallo >becoming ??? And elsewhere in the stories, about how one of >the Talyedras (sp?) would change their name because it no longer suited >their personality? > yes. Tallo was a farmboy who after calling lightning and killing his lover (and almost himself) was rescued by Savil and taken to the Tayledras. He became Moondance. This story is recounted in Magic's Pawn page 296. Also Darkwind's original name was songwind. He changed it after the heartstone shattered. I was quite furious on friday evening, because these posts arrived 2 minutes before I had to leave, so I couldn't respond. Kirsten, I'm sorry if my message came across as a flame: it wasn't supposed to (and please don't go into lurk-mode again just because I have a different opinion, even if they come a bit hot served, fresh from the oven, so to speak ;) I plead chronic foot-in-mouth disease ;) ). I just can't stand it when people do perfectly silly things to perfectly complete animals. Like, cropping ears or tails or extracting claws for no apparent reason besides some breed standards or looks (mind, I don't object if it is done for medicinical reasons). Shaving whiskers is not as drastic as that, but IMO much the same category. I sure you wouldn't hurt your horse/animal on purpose.I fervently hope nobody on this list would. No. I'm _sure_ nobody would (don't disappoint me, folks! ;) ). So, in response to everybody who responded to this topic, I just replied to Farrin's post, because I still can't respond to several messages in just one post. Anybody who wishes to continue a discussion of this topic, feel free to email me off-list. They don't use them to find things > on the ground; nor as screens for stuff getting in noses. Well, actually they do. It is not an evolutionary leftover like the chestnuts, for instance. Obviously horses don't use their whiskers to determine, e.g. the width of passages, but to distiguish edible from non-edible stuff, since they can't see what's right in front of their nose (blind angle). Hmm, maybe they do use them to find things on the ground, or at least to experience what the ground "looks" (resp. feels) like. Like foals who encounter something hitherto unknown and nose at it (since they have no feeling in their hooves); adult horses do that too, whenever they meet something new, e.g. a plastic foil on the ground (-> TTeam, Linda Tellington-Jones Equine Awareness etc; is that popular in the US too?). Ok, I _know_ that cutting hair doesn't cause pain as cutting the fingers does. What I meant was that both would leave the being with no sense of touch in that part of the body. Cut the tips of your fingers often enough, and you'll loose your sense of touch there. Shave an animals whiskers and it'll loose that part of their sensual system . That's what I was trying to say. So, I hope I have clarified my opinion/point of view and stated that I didn't and don't intend to flame somebody.
