Then the Mallorean and the Belgarath and Polagra books but I disagree

Horses have a natural space in their mouths between the front biting teeth
and the back chewing teeth. This just evolved as the muzzle lengthened, *but*
it works out to be a perfect place to put a control/signal/ communication
device known as a bit. Don't think of holding something between your teeth,
the bit fits comfortably and the *well-schooled* horse picks it up and sort
of holds it to enhance communication. (In fact a friend's Arab will twist his
lips around to hold the shank of a hackamore in his mouth cuz he misses his
bit. Spider just chews/slobbers on his and makes wierd noises with it.) A
horse *should* respond to very gentle subtle signals from the reins thru the
bit, he is said to be hard mouthed if he chooses not to respond, this can be
attitude or actual insensitivity due to over use. The *poor* rider's response
is to buy a *stronger* bit one that delivers a more intense sensation (up to
pain or injury, ther is some nasty stuff out there) A horse (Spider<brag>) is
said to have a soft mouth if he responds well to signals from the bit. 
Horse lips are incredibly sensitive, put down a mix of grain, alfalfa pellets
and antibiotic tablets and the kid can slurp up every morsel of food and
never touch the pills--they are dry as a bone.
IMHO a horse may be handled from birth, or brought up at up to five or six
and the results will mostly depend on the individuals personality and the
training received.
Spider was a "pasture horse" until he was five. He passed through several
owners who never got around to breaking him and then went to my trainer who
broke him as part of a college class on training (which I just happened to be
taking) If you can have a modified lifebond with an animal, then we do. I
have had him for 16 years--certainly the most long standing non-blood
relationship in my life. I know other people who have coddled babies from
birth and ended up with devoted *but* flaky horses. Go Know!
On the personality of warsteeds, horses' personalities vary widely. My Spider
(except he's a gelding) would be an excellent place to start to breed a
warsteed (And I don't think the world is ready for this). He is almost
fearless. (His detractors say it is because he has yet to meet a life form
meaner than he is, but...) I have ridden him everywhere and the most I can
say is that if it is really scary *a bear* he will freeze and refuse to go
forward. He has never bolted (knock on wood here) on me. He doesn't shy. and
I was barred from the race track at my last barn because once he gets in
front he turns his head and snaps at any horse that tries to pass him. Not
nice. He is smart. and we work as a team, The few times he really doesn't
want to do something cross a bridge that was rotting, go into a clump of
bushes where BTW there turned out to be a bear, I will let him decide. 
On the other hand he has been known to totally bully people. He worked it out
so that my friend would give him a couple of handfulls of grain everytime she
went in to get her horse or he'd charge them and make her horse spook. Then
he'd take her bucket out into the middle of the pasture and guard it until
she tempted him over to the fence with enough grain so she could run and get
the bucket while he was busy eating. 
And she was grateful that he tolerated her, people he doesn't like just get
run out of th pasture!
I can talk for *days* about my guy-- but someone is going to have to down
load this. so this is enough. (Don't encourage me! I have 16 years of Spider
stories--this could get ugly!)

Let's see it....

     "Suddenly, Charliss' forces attacked. One moment the sky was clear; 
the next, the few glimpes of sun were through the fluttering of the 
makaar's wings. 
     "What, what *are* these things?!" Elspeth yelled over the din.
     "They're...makaar! But we thought they were dessstryoed at the end 
of the Mage-Warsss....Charlisssssss musssst of kept sssssome....." 
Treyvan replied.
     *The Hardornen forces must come soon, or all hope is lost!* thought 
Firesong.\
     The battle raged. THe squeal of horses in terror, the screams of men 
and companions alike as the Shadow-Lover approached....until a voice 
boomed over it all.
     "NO, CHARLISS. THIS SHALL NOT HAPPEN. THESE ARE MY PEOPLE, ALL. I, 
THE STAR-EYED, AND THE PROTECTOR OF BOTH THE CHILDREN OF THE KALED'AIN 
AND OF VALDEMAR. YOUR MAGIC HAS DESTROYED ON OF MY MOST ANCIENT 
PREISTESSES....I WILL HAVE VENGEANCE!"
     Another figure appeared over the horizon, seemingly appearing out of 
the sun itself...he, for this was quite definitely a he, looked into the 
eyes of the Goddess....and paused, startled. Reslpendent in his finery, 
the God stood dumbstruck, as if someone had hit him on the back of his 
head with a 2 by 4, before speaking.
     "AND HER VENGEANCE WILL PALE IN COMPARISON TO MINE, FOR THROUGH YOUR 
IDOICY TWO OF MY MOST TREASURED PRIESTS HAVE BEEN MURDERED...FIRST 
ULRICH, ONE OF THE FEW BELIEVERS....AND THEN, YOU HAD MY HIGH PREIST, MY 
SON OF THE SUN...KILLED. YOU SHALL PAY!"
    Over the middle of the startled battleground the two deities 
approached, and joined hands. With a cruel, hard look in their eyes, they 
stared at the elderly man leading the Imperials. Charliss' body wracked 
with seizures for a moment, and then..he....faded away. 
     With his death, the makaar too disappeared, as the Deities left; 
leaving this war to earthly things.
     EVen without the powerful magicks, the Empire was still overpwoering 
the Alliance, by numbers alone. 
     *Where *are* they?!* Firesong thought frantically. He couldn't hold 
out against the IMperial mages for much longer....and suddenly, the 
resistance was gone from his magic, and arrowes protruded from the 
IMperial's throats. The Adept leading the EMpire in Charliss' place, 
thought....had been killed by dagger. Behind him was an average looking 
man, staring at none less than a Companion.
    ::*I, Florian,  choose you, Duke Tremane*::, Tremane heard echoing in 
his mind...but he was lost in the deep, saphire eyes of the creature 
before him. A mage-call over the field warned him, though, of an attacker 
behind him. HE whirled behind, to find the assailant already dead by 
levin-bolt...and turned around, and was lost in another pair of eyes. 
I...I....thank you...." Tremane got out, before drowning in those 
silvery-blue eyes....the Owner of them looked as if someone had hit him 
with a board; a humorous sight, considering he was wearing a flamboyant 
magenta robe, contrasting with his silver hair..., combined with the 
youthfull face, an Adept. But something drew him to this one..."

Ok, ok..not Misty-level, I grant ye' that;P She'll put a few more boards 
and lifebonds in, though, I grant ye' that;P Maybe an'desha and some nice 
Iftellian boy;>

Hi Debbie! 

Nice to meet you!  Just about everybody I've ever met has had some kind of 
problem with their name.  My husband's isn't a problem anymore, he will 
only answer to Tony. IIRC means if I remember correctly.  ROGH? sorry, 
you're on your own!  I could make a guess, but trust me, I'd be wrong.

Actually, I think they'd make sure someone -did- contact Tremane, suddenly,
without warning and with lots of pointy things (Yeup, I've been reading 
Pratchett again) - ie assassination. It does seem to be the time-honoured
practice in the Empire..

I meant the second time. And that'd mean either A: Spirits can travel

Remember, that at the end of _Magic's Price_, Van says "Most Heralds have
a couple of choices; they can go on to the Havens, or come back like the
Tayledras say people come back..." <p. 331> 

So, the Heralds are given a choice, and they choose what happens to them
after they die, and if they choose to come back as Companions...then they
know what is going to happen to them. 

And I don't think that they totally loose any sence of who they were.
Sayvil the Companion seems a lot like Savil the Herald to me..

lifebonds are very rare. Yet, Vanyel lifebonded *twice*, and every series
has, like, 5 lifebonded couples each! I don't get it! For something that's

Umm, yes. *grin* I assume you mean the flowers of that name in AoTQ.

Even if as a spirit, he can't get them from some other plane, or the 
Havens or something, I imagine they'd be blooming somewhere round the
world, depending on how widespread they are. Yes, I know it was out of
season in Valdemar, but remember, seasons are reversed in different
hemispheres.. (I'm freezing in Sydney right now, and it's supposed to
be hot and humid in the northern hemisphere, depending on latitude).

I think the Elenium and Tamuli are pretty good too.  In fact, I like
Sparhawk better than Garion, most of the time.  But, after all, my mum says
I'm cynical for my age.  However, the Elenium and the Tamuli have got rather
similar plotlines, so I just read and reread them for the David Eddings wit.

Well, Vanyel didn't exactly lifebond *twice* if you think that Stef is
'Lendel reincarnated.  And the only reason I can think of as to why there
are so many lifebonds is that the books had to be written about something
special, interesting, and not really about the everyday life of the people.
Therefore you have the higher occurrence of lifebonding than usual.
