Lithuanian culture and language have proven very impermeable to outside influences. Trivia Alert!: Lithuanian culture is one of the few cultures that maintained an active aboriginal pre-Christian religion into the twentieth century. There is some indication that it is still practiced in the rural areas of Lithuania. Consequently, Lithuanian religion is one of the few really good views into the old pagan religions of the slavic peoples. Notice that a lot of the names with no obvious equivalents are names of non-humans. >>>Personally, it annoys the heck out of me when authors mix Earth names and fantasy names, but Misty keeps it at an OK level...I guess...<<< Why would it annoy you? Authors mostly do it to create a sense of familiarity in the secondary world of the text and also to predispose readers (via their familiarity/recognition) to certain cultural expectations. If all the names have very clear English and Germanic origins, it sets up a lot of expectations in the reader. In another missive, Claris wrote: >>>Name Brand Clothing.<<< Oh God! I miss NBC so much! This doesn't mean he's not bi- ... just because you *act* like a duck... It would make one heck of a plot device to have Tremane realize his lifebonded is another man, then have to get used to the idea, if he *does* think he's straight... And to have Firesong realize that *HIS* lifebonded is a guy who thinks he's straight... Could be fun... Poor Firesong, though. (Not that he can't overcome it, but it might flip him out real good for a while!) And Tremane fighting the inevitable could take up half a book or so ! But Look Out, Valdemar if/when they *DO* finally get it all together... Scary thought, that! Firesong doing it with his lifebonded is likely to set off VISIBLE FIREWORKS OVER THE CASTLE, for pete's sake! He's been *waiting* so long... Of course (rotten brat that I am), they *could* both be crazy, too, and neither *ONE* of them could actually have a lifebonded mate... Firesong wants to be like Vanyel, and in many ways he is, but in many others, well, he just doesn't cut the mustard. Until Firesong decides he can be a totally selfless being, (i.e. stand down an entire army, sacrificing him to save Valdemar, etc.), even if he doesn't actually *DO* it... well, Firesong is still thinking about himself, not his lifebonded, and he won't find him until he gets off *that* schtick. Sortof like the "you're trying too hard" routine I've seen in real life situations.. you know... chicks going to college to get an MRS... Anyway, enough Firesong-bashing... he's a neat guy.
