Another one that agrees! And yes, I would assume he helped > write it since his name is on it. (mischevious grin) Misty doesn't "try" Actually, there are levels of helping. For example, the If I Pay Thee Not In Gold Book that Lackey does with Anthony. I think there is a distinct cut when Lackey stops writing and Anthony takes, ie her part is good, and his isn't. On the other hand, the Ship Who Searched, I don't think McCaffrey wrote much of that one at all. It seemed to be entirely Lackey's style throughout. Which would seem to be that McCaffrey got her name on the title because she created the world and not because she wrote anything in the book. :) Another example would be Belgarath the Sorcerer from Eddings and his wife Leigh. Now, he says she helped out in previous books, but from a reader's point of view, it would appear (to me) that this book has a completely different tone and POV than the other books. Is this due to Leigh having more of her thumb in the pie? That is what I would think. Dixon's bits in Lackey's books seem to make her characters less endearing in the heart-wrenching emotional fashion that I like so much about her books. IMHO, I've always had a suspicion that he puts in the parts with the jokey characters (who end up rather one dimensional) such as the hertasi (can't remember his name) in the Gryphon trilogy. Teen age audiences are going to look for books in the adult (not X-adult--*regular adult*) sections the so called *young adult* books are aimed at about 6th grade. Some 7th graders will still read them but thats about it. At least until you become and adult and can read anything you want. I wait for the latest Madeline L'Engle (supposedly children's) book as eagerly as any of the the other authors I read. Of course ther are those that point out that I am simply a extremely chonologically gifted child. I've said this before, but people seem to be skipping what I say, and then arguing with me when I mention the words Target Audience. The purpose of this post is to completely explain [well, as much as I can, anyways] what I *mean* when I say TARGET AUDIENCE. This is a long post, but I suggest you read it if you have something to say about it. Some listmembers [Kory, Michal, Summersong] expressed disbelief when I stated that Misty's books are geared towards a specific audience. They claim they know people who fall out of the target audience I mention. But that has *nothing* to do with my statement. What I mean when I say TARGET AUDIENCE is that Misty INTENDED to write her books with a SPECIFIC demographic group in mind. That's good business sense. Sure, 30 year old circus clowns could read her books, but does that mean, neccesarily that they are the audience that the books are intended for. And I'm sorry, but there ARE mass audiences out there who do things. Many will be exceptions to the rule, yes, but that does NOT mean the rule is completely invalid. When I say that her Velgarth books are aimed towards young adult females, and the SERRAted Edge books are aimed towards young adult males, it's not a blanket assumption. It's an educated guess. There's a difference. And there's some proof for it. Sorry this is so textbook-like.... but I did warn you people with the word ACADEMIC in the header. (1) The Public Libraries put Misty's books under Young Adult. At least, out here in New York City (specifically, Staten Island) they do. The major book chains [B. Dalton and Waldenbooks] do not, but, then again, they also put blatant kid-oriented books [like the YOUNG JEDI KNIGHTS series by Kevin Anderson] in the SciFi/Fantasy section. The used book stores I have experienced do not either, but then again, there were no young adult sections at all in the ones I've been in. (1a) I would trust the Public Library, they seem to be a credible source. Book stores are out to make a buck, and many people buy things on impulse. So why put a best-selling series in with the kiddy books when adults might purchase it? (2) Misty, or one of the people at DAW books has said [somewhere] that it's true. I remember reading that *somewhere,* but I have to find it, so the evidence has to wait on this one. When I find it, I'll post it, but this is an insignificant part of my argument. It's not in the Mercedes Lackey conference which I posted in the past. I'm going to rummage until I find it. [3] Basic common sense. Or at least, my common sense. Let me explain. (3a) Misty's first Velgarth trilogy, commonly called QUEEN'S OWN or the ARROWS BOOKS centers around Talia, a young teenage girl. The trilogy goes on (generally) to describe her maturation into a Herald. The SERRAted EDGE books I have read or seen (including CHROME CIRCLE) mainly deal with male protagonists (Tannim, for instance), and describes their masculine adventures, incorporating fast cars and sexy otherworldy creatures. (3b) People in general identify with characters like them. My myriad writing instructors at St. John's University have told me this. I've taken several courses in writing both fiction and non-fiction. Journalism and public relations is what I do, and I also freelance write, and I tend to believe what my professors have told me about writing theory. Books like THE WRITER'S MARKET say this also, but go on to say that a successful writer has a target audience in mind, and his / her stories are aimed towards it. My bookshelf is full of books on writing and characterization (if anyone actually WANTS the list, I'll give it to them) and several of them (I don't remember which, offhand) also make this point. We can stick 3a and 3b together, and see that there is credibility in the theory that Misty's Velgarth and SERRAted Edge books are targeted towards young women and young men, specifically. Also, our wonderful Tammy Harris (yay!) conducted a poll a couple of months ago on who subscribes to the mailing list, and a lot of people were in the young adult age. Now, a LOT of people have electronic mail, so you can't say that the inordinate amount of young'un's on the list is because of that. (BTW, Tammy, I want to include the poll in the FAQ ... can you re-send it to me? I lost the disk when I lost CompuServe.) I would gander it's because she has lots of young fans. Queen's Own, the fanclub, also has legions of young ones. But that's not part of the proof, this paragraph is simply an observation. *Whew!* Now, I may not have proved my point here (I doubt I have) but I believe that there IS at least *some* credence to the theory that Misty's books are written for specific audiences. So don't jump on me when I say it. I'm not saying that ONLY 15 or so year old girls read Velgarth books, that's far from the truth. I am saying that that's who the books are aimed for. Bright Lady, *I* am hooked on them, and I'm a 22 year old guy! Peace and Balance ... (You know who you are, you!) Age matters not. It's the IDEAS. Some 16 year olds are more articulate than others. And some younger people seem older. There's been times I wish I had empathy so I could know what the people I was talking to were feeling... whether they were laughing with me or at me.. it would have come in handy in my personal relationships! So when my ex (of two years ago) said "Oh no! I'm not sleeping with my ex!" I could have picked that up right away. Or in Speech and Debate, to tell if the judges actually were interested in things or not. I'm kind of manipulative in a good way towards some people and this would be very useful.... *thinking* heh heh heh.... Peace and Balance ... I have to jump in on this name thing - my full name is Michele Ann Meredith (don't say Michele My Bell to me it annoys me - my name is pronounced Mashele not Meeshele) My name is pretty normal and you would think there would be no problem, right? Yeah, sure - not!! I have been called Michael so many times it isn't funny. I also get funny looks when people ask for my last name and I say Meredith and they say no I need you last name. Hasn't anyone ever heard of Meredith as a last name? Duh!! Oh, yeah besides answering to Michele, I answer to Mary(my mom), Megan, Missy, Shellie, Suzanna(?????), and Mishi. I can't remember which is which but I think Meredith is Welsh for one who lives by the sea and my mom's maiden name Haldeman is Welsh for one who lives on a hill. That's it for now.
