Two of the longtime mailing day regulars, Helen and Rusty, are from the DC area and it only takes them two hours to get to Shiloh as well. We live in one of the suburbs of Baltimore and it only took us about an hour and 45 minutes to get there last time, and we even hit a spot of traffic on the way! Since then I've worked on them all, with heavier co-writing on Winds of Fate and Jinx High." Appearently he's helped her on much more than he takes credit for! Be wary of generalizations like this. I'd tend to agree with the series you described (I never really got super into AoTQ for example, but like Chrome Circle). The Last Herald Mage series is hardly targetted specifically at young teenage girls. I'd argue that By the Sword isn't either - Kerowyn grows up very quickly in it - we track her over the course of age 16-30+ and the bulk of that time is 30+ - I'd say an older [female] demographic there. Similarly, I'd say that OathBound & OathBreakers aren't necessarily targetted at young girls or even a young audience.. And the Di Tregarde series is specifically not targetted at a youthful group - keep an eye out for who really likes those books on the list. CoTN for example tends to attract an older demographic, or [generalizing and speculating wildly] people who tend to be more mature, in terms of having responsibilities [car payments, jobs, married, whatever]. I think you can overanalyse things sometimes. Sure there were cars in the SERRA series, but not much in _When the Bough Breaks_, and even in other books like _Chrome Circle+, they weren't that bad - the pov characters and setting were interested in them so they get mentioned, but I don't reallly think that they're going to attract serious car buffs because of that. > (3b) People in general identify with characters like them. To general. People identify with characters who face similar obstacles, or who have -something- in common or people who they'd -like- to be. Not necessarily people who are even very like them on the whole. And good writers will help you identify with their characters anyway. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sal wrote: Kerry wrote: > > Gwena is mage-gifted. :) Yfandes may well have been (& I suspect she was, > > given the way and -amount- of energy she channeled to Van at various times). > > Sayvil probably is. > > Sayvil *DEFINITELY* is mage-gifted. So is Gwena. For Sayvil, reference > Winds of Fury, where she is helping Firesong teach young mage-gifted > individuals in the use of their powers... I agree that Sayvil likely is, but there's no proof - all she's doing with Firesong in Winds of Fury is watching and offering advice. It proves that she's -had- mage-gift in the past, and remembers training and the rest, and that she can see what the trainees are doing (but then all companions should be able to see magic by virtue of their being spirits). It doesn't prove that she has it, it's only implied. :) Oh dear, picky picky. Sorry. :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sal asked how old everyone is. We're pretty much made for each other, he's smart where I'm stupid, and vice-versa. Which is actually pretty amazing, considering I was on the rebound from the Biggest Jerk In The World, and you know how those usually go! By the way, Thess, I applaud your decision to "live in sin", at least for now. Derek and I lived together for two years before "the big M", and I wouldn't have had it any other way. That way we found out whether we could stand to live together before we made it official. I guess _Tigana_ is pushing it out of my mind (Yes! I am reading Tigana by GGK, and it is Great!!!!!<-for old times sake Now I have to get the other 2 standalones (I've already read Fionavar)). Was there one with Van and Lendel/Stef? I hold to the assuption that there was a click between Kerowyn and Eldan. It certainly sounded that way in the book! And if you'll remember, Van was trying to stay AWAY from Stef at first, and there didn't seem to be any click. (Could this be because he HAD clicked with 'Lendel, and it would be kinda like clicking twice?) Just food for thought. Bon apetit! A while back, a list member tried to, but Firebird said that he/she (I can't remember who it was) couldn't come, that Firebird isn't open to the public. It's mail order only. > From: Korendil > Hah! My name isn't too hard: Mathew John Timmerman. I constantly get Matthew (the x-tra "t"). It's probably the most common varaition of the name, yet people act as if it's the oddest name in the world. Sigh. And it's so normal too. Then, of course, I get poeple calling me door-Mat, or Timberland. Pretty scarry isn't it? ;) Some of us have been on the list for a couple of years. Mel, when did the list start? 1994 wasn't it? I know that I was on sometime in the fall of 94 (as a lurker at first). Lady Thessaly wrote: > You know, I hate to remind everyone of this, but Skif and Nyara are NOT > lifebonded!!!!! A while back, someone quoted a QO issue where Misty said that the only new lifebond in BTS is Selanay and Daren. That sort of leaves out Eldan and Kero. > From: awand123-+AT+-pipeline.com > > Um, just a conservative answer without a book to look this up in hand > ... In BW, it's as Di's house-sitter who FedExes books to her. In JH, Larry talks to him about Lenny's AIDS on the phone. In BW and JH, Di mentions living in New Haven, CT, while she's obviously in NYC in CotN. Now that i got that out of my system on to the point of this post. I thought that I would mention the keychains again. I noticed that there was a lot of newbies poppin up. I don't recall who started this idea, but we were tossing an idea back and forth to make something for all the people on the list to sort of tie them together. We (Chen-Chen, Lady Windsong, and myself) offered to make keychains/things to hang somewhere for anyone who would be interested. If any of you want more info private e-mail me at mishi-+AT+-prolog.net. I was just curious if anyone else on the list has family reunions? We just had ours and I think I Know how Vanyel feels when he went to visit his family. Our reunion focuses around the descendents of three brothers who originally came over to the U.S. from Wales. Well, big families are typical in our family so right now I think there are 6 or 7 core groups with about 15 - 20 memebers in each group. We are all a bit insane. We have a cake walk - Haldeman style - in other words we cheat in order to win a 12 pack of soda - all in good fun. We also get quite nasty and rowdy when playing bingo. Cries of hey, that's what I wanted were often heard. Then it's time for the water balloon battle for the kiddies - the adults seem to suffer from Peter Pan syndrome around that time. What a great time!!! I think that may be the reason why I am acting a little weird today. I don't know why I'm so talkative today, though! I must be suffering from babbling syndrome.
