First of all, I would like to know who Jeffery thinks Misty was portraying should LHM have been /-fiction... The only problem I have with Misty's portrayal of homosexuality in LHM is Vanyel's abrupt change, and even that is well explained... In the beginning (pardon the crudity, but I can't think of any other way of saying it...) Van was a stereotypical "bottom" (for those of you that don't know what that means, DONT ASK ON THE LIST, email me privately if you want to know...) Textevd: "You just heard I was playing ewe to 'Lendel's ram!"... But, even though He very effeminate qualities to his characterization, the tones to the descriptions of him are very much masculine... Not quite as masculine as Tylendel, but there all the same... Should Misty have been uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality I think there would have been a MUCH stronger overtone of feminism in Vanyel's character... IMO, most of his feminism, and Tylendel's comes from the emotion that they both show, rather than the more reserved masculinity we see in characters such as Darkwind, Skif, Dirk, etc. (Kris is the one exception... When I read AotQ I was waiting on him to come out to Talia... At least until the scene in the cabin...) This feminism follows Van through all of Mpawn... Then, again, IMO, he seems to "grow up" by Mpromise, becoming a LOT more masculine to the point that by Mprice he seems to be the stereotypical "top" with Stef being the stereotypical "bottom" (Stef allways seemed to prissy to me...) I can see where one could think that it was Misty's attempt to make one play the male character, and the other play the female role, but I think it was actually just a play off their characters... Had Van been a gung-ho warrior he-man jock type character, or even a "typical" male, he would have never been sent to Haven, never would have had the problems that lead to his meeting with 'Lendel, and the story would have been pointless... In Mpawn it is Van's feminine qualities that keeps the story going... Had he not grown up, however, he would have never been able to handle the Karsite border for fear that his best tunic might get ripped, making the storyline unbelievable... and had Stef not been effeminate his eventual role as "healer" in the Kyree's cave would have been badly suited... Personally, I think it nicely parodied Van's own attempts with Lendel... As for the rest of her portrayals, Van and Lendel are not the only homosexuals in her books, just the most obvious... In the AotQ trilogy there is first Keren and Ylsa, then Keren and Sherill... None of which seemed to have a masculine/feminine counterpart... Jeffery had stated that he never read past LHM, and therefore missed this portrayal, which I thought was rather beautiful... It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Ylsa had not died, but the three became a lifebonded triume... There is also Firesong and Andesha (and silverfox, and whoever else that he was with)... There are the Kestra'chern that are bisexual... There is Tarma and Kethry *gryn*... It's flat out accepted among merc companies... There are also several others scattered here and there... So why, if Misty is so uncomfortable with homosexuality, would she make it a tolerated, if not accepted part of Velgarthian culture? Well, that's enough rambling for now... Heather Alexander is a musician specializing in Celtic Music. She's done vocals for a number of Misty tapes and she has tapes of her own. In my opinion, she has a voice of pure gold and a fiddling skill to rival... um... Nero. Her homepage's URL is on my homepage if you want more information. Not the river!!!). > Who the hell is Heather Alexander??? > :) > Ami > Heather Alexander is a filk performer - currently she works solo, but at various times she has had a band, such as Phoenyx (whose album is out of print.) Her current CD is called Wanderlust. I haven't checked the Firebird catalog lately, but they should carry it. She is also the lead singer on several Misty tapes incl. Freedom, Flight and Fantasy and Shadow Stalker. If you ever get to see her live, go - she is stunning looking and lots of fun in concert! As far as I know she lives in California (am I up to date there?) Heather is also forming a fan club to raise money for her next album (well, that's what I heard was the reason for it...) Her record label is called Sea Fire Productions which I THINK has a Web page - do an AltaVista or HotBot search. BTW: those of you with Usenet: there is a good list of filk sources (With addresses and phone numbers) posted regularly to the alt.music.filk newsgroup.
